Ghosts and goats
I'm about to go to sleep in a 400 year old, beautiful chateau in the Somme, France. It was used as a hospital in both WW1 and WW2 so is jam packed full of ghosts. There is a 4 week old Pygmy goat outside and I spent the evening drinking great wine and eating all the cheese with my dad. Anyone who knows me well knows how happy I am.
Albert Farrington’s “It’s A Long Way To Tipperary” was one of the biggest hit songs of the WW1 era. It came to be an unofficial anthem, sung by British soldiers away at the front and longing for home. Here it is in all its Monophonic glory – a classic British “Music Hall” song.

Tribute to Sybil Atteck (born 02.03.1911)
Sybil Atteck (C)
Like the well-known St Lucian folklorist Harold Simmons (1915-1996), the Jamaican landscape and portrait artist Alberty Huie (1921-2010) and a few other Caribbean artists, Sybil Atteck both painted and pointed the way towards the creation of a Caribbean consciousness. One writer who did a profile on the artist in 1960 noted that "when Sybil Atteck and a group of Trinidadian artists founded the Art Society, of which she is now vice-president, the concept of art in the West Indies was not merely imitative, but excluded what was local."
Sybil Atteck (C) Panmen
The writer continued by noting that "To paint a breadfruit tree so that it was a breadfruit, and not a majestic oak, was as daring then as it was to write the word "mangoes" in a West Indian poem." One reviewer noted that "Her work at its best has its roots deep in her own country, Trinidad, which she has often left for tuition and fresh inspiration but to which she always returns." In more ways than one her paintings literally capture the social and natural landscape of Trinidad. Her experiences working at the Royal Botanic Garden in POS, as a member of the Horticultural Club and as of theTrinidad Field Naturalists Club exposed her to men like W.E.B. Broadway and Andrew Carr who inspired her to discover more about te natural and social environment of TnT. As TnT approached Independence, she was one of the persons selected as a member of the Committee appointed by the Government to consider the design of the National Flag and Coat of Arms and responsible for the selection of the national symbols. In many ways she struggled in a society which still clung to many colonial ways of doing things. Upon her passing in 1975 her brother noted that "she opened a Pandora's Box at a time when it was thought that all things of cultural value came from abroad. She gave an awareness of art and culture to the Trinidadian." Inded, she was agreat Trinidadian.
Sybil Atteck (C) Trinidadian
Today as promised I will like to pay tribute to another talented Trinidian, the late Sybil Marjorie Atteck. She was born 0ne hundred years ago, on 3 February 1911 to be exact. She died in 1975. The following information was provided by the Art Society of TT. I would thereafter add some more words in Tribute to her.
