Decided to post my notes on eridian culture/society. Anything related to eridian physiology or the environmental conditions on Erid was pulled directly from Weir’s lore sheet. Anything relating to how those limitations/conditions affected the development of Eridian society and culture are my own inferences .
Eridians have inferior spatial memory, meaning large scale city planning becomes more difficult vs simple iterative engineering. Most city development was constructed organically over time, though some preplanned clusters exist. Maps and navigational records are crucial.
Inferior spatial memory + aversion to prolonged focus means theoretical physics and more abstract explorations of novel scientific concepts are more difficult for a single eridian to conceptualize (though their perfect recall gives them the edge within the realm of known mathematics). Typically requires a thrum to divide the work. Broadly, Erid’s scientific focus is directed toward empirical, tool oriented science. This is reflected in their highly advanced chemical and material engineering fields.
Planet’s strong magnetic field, weaker fine motor control, and lack of any sort of light based sensory input have delayed the development of computers considerably.
Artwork in Erid is not focused on visuals, but rather the acoustics of a piece.
Omnidirectional sight + preference for multitasking also means a lot of radial designs appear in architecture, engineering, etc.
Society is divided into regional clusters instead of a central governmental body. Erid’s economy doesn’t utilize currency, instead operating more like a barter system. Communal species; not as individualistic as human society, and therefore most clusters take a collaborative approach to food and resource distribution. In the instances where some sort of reciprocal payment is expected, individuals typically abide by “favor for a favor” or “item for an item” rules. Intercluster trade, on the other hand, is primarily materials and resource based, and political disputes have historically arisen over resource access. Individual clusters typically develop based on what resources are close by, and specialize in the management and utilization of that given resource.
Eridians likely had a head-start on maglev technology due to their ability to sense magnetic fields. As a result, dominant form of transportation is maglev rail; limited spatial memory also means that guided routes are easier for eridians to navigate vs independently operated vehicles, such as automobiles. Automobiles specifically are not super practical on Erid due to atmospheric composition delaying/affecting the development of the internal combustion engine (sidenote: combustion engines on Erid would need to rely on chemical oxidizers to work, rather than atmospheric, making them inherently more dangerous). The high atmospheric pressure/dense atmosphere also means increased drag, which would increase energy needed to power a vehicle; maglev being frictionless would help offset energy cost and wear. Very robust public transit system.
