On November 7 (October 25 in the Russian calendar of the time), Vladimir Lenin and his revolutionary Bolshevik party seized power in Petrograd, the capital, and overthrew the government. ... 1918 The Treaty of Brest-Litovsk is signed, ending Russia's involvement in World War I and dissolving its commitments to the Central Powers. Negotiations for the treaty began six months prior to March 1918. Russia long-awaited a world-wide proletariat revolution to come to its aid to win the war; when that didn't happen, peace with the Central Powers was its only option.
