Day 20 - Project Highlight - My Village through the Lens
Just over a year ago, one of our local colleagues approached Chris about a project he’d like to do: Procure more photography & film resources in order to involve youth in journalism. Chris involved me immediately given my long-standing interest in photography & video and experience participating in actual training on the subject for many years.
The resulting project received financial support through the Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens Memorial Fund and involved developing a full 10-session training on recognizing community assets and developing the ability to share this with the word through film. The project was developed and coordinated through the local youth center, UniT, by its program specialist Alexandr Godoroja.
For us, it was exciting to connect with people in the US about our community here. Most notably, with our friends Simón Sotelo from the field of electronic media at the University of Cincinnati and with Clancy Calkins, freelance filmmaker with a masters in Journalism/Film from Northwestern University. They offered thoughtful insights on film-making as a means of storytelling. I also connected the youth involved here with youth in the US Midwest through a World Wise Schools project blog (1, 2, 3, 4).
