Hi all,

This is just a heads up that I've got a lot of stuff happening in my irl life so I will be working limited hours at the CSH Inc. corporate office for a minute. Please allow for a 2-5 business day response time on asks, inquiries, and business-related direct messages. It is important to me to intentionally and thoroughly answer all of these to the best of my ability, and I can't do that quickly with my current schedule. If you're wondering if I'll reach out to you about a position at the company (and again, if this is the case, if you feel comfortable hitting me up about it please do because I feel presumptuous assuming anyone wants to participate in this office bit, but I have learned that people also feel presumptuous messaging me first so I'm working on this and hope to hit a few folks up in the near future) or are waiting on an offer letter in response to previous communication, please allow for a 2-5 business day response time on those as well.

Upcoming items at some point:

Org chart: I have promised to deliver an org chart with current employees for ease of reference, and I have not forgotten about this, but it will be a second due to the aforementioned busy schedule irl.

Pinned post: I am also going to put together a pinned post with easily findable info and links to other relevant posts (like the org chart and info about the Chubby Shane Hollander Inc. community, which does still exist but has been made private because someone reported it) and tags, etc.

Perhaps a fake company logo because I think that would be hilarious to include at the end of my fake email posts.

Researcher probes how much CEOs really matter

In a recent podcast, Insead business school Professor of Strategy Guoli Chen delved into the question as to how much CEOs matter. Chen’s research reveals that CEOs are responsible for only 15% to 20% of business results, depending on the sample size and empirical model used

Guoli Chen, a professor of strategy at Insead graduate business school in France, explains what his research shows about the influence of the CEO on a company’s organizational outcomes on a recent “Insead Knowledge” podcast segment dubbed “Do CEOs Matter?”

The seed for “Do CEOs matter” was planted when, as a 20-year-old professional at a Chinese state-owned firm, Chen came to view his senior management as fascinating and not in a good way.

If reading newspapers, drinking tea and dishing with colleagues could be considered work, his boss's boss excelled at it. He began to contemplate whether the company’s performance would be affected if the boss were replaced by anybody else.

Rather than waiting to find out, Chen moved to an investment bank and was riveted to see that the venture capital wing of the firm selected which companies to fund based mostly on the strength of the founding team, particularly the CEO.

This early-career experience sparked a brilliant academic career devoted to the study of C-suite executives and the complexities that can make or break a business.

Microsoft to buy Nokia's mobile phone business

Microsoft is to buy Nokia’s mobile phone business for €5.44bn (£4.6bn/US$7.2bn) and the Finnish firm has said its CEO, Stephen Elop, will join the software company as part of the deal.nBoth Nokia, once the undisputed leader in mobile phones, and Microsoft have been struggling to respond to the challenge from smartphone makers such as Apple and Samsung.

Analysts say Elop’s decision in 2011 to adopt Microsoft’s untested Windows Phone software has yet to pay off.

The deal is expected to be finalised in the first quarter of 2014 and is subject to approval by Nokia’s shareholders and regulatory approvals. Nokia partnered in 2011 with Microsoft and uses Microsoft’s Windows software to run its mobile phones.

“It’s a bold step into the future – a win-win for employees, shareholders and consumers of both companies,” said Microsoft’s outgoing chief executive, Steve Ballmer.

“Bringing these great teams together will accelerate Microsoft’s share and profits in phones, and strengthen the overall opportunities for both Microsoft and our partners across our entire family of devices and services.”

Nokia said in a statement it expected that Elop, along with senior executives Jo Harlow, Juha Putkiranta, Timo Toikkanen, and Chris Weber, would transfer to Microsoft when the deal was concluded. It did not say what roles they would take at Microsoft.

Elop, a Canadian hired by Nokia in 2010 from Microsoft, has been one of the favourites to take over as Microsoft chief when Ballmer steps down.

Nokia said its board chairman, Risto Siilasmaa, would take over CEO duties while the firm looked for a new CEO.
