Cephalopod Dreams

For hours the snorkeler swam and floated on top of the sun-struck water, watching the octopus vulgaris come and go like a tossed, living tiger lily. Once she fell asleep for a few instants, her waterproof pad and stylus floating away, and dreamed that tiger lilies swam in all directions below her, crossing back and forth in enigmatic patterns.
