Moving through the composition Paul now deals with the water and the matter of reflected elements, such as the rocks and the tree. HERE IS ANOTHER STAND-ALONE TUTORIAL – ONE THAT COULD HELP YOU TRANSFORM YOUR PAINTINGS OF WATER – PACKED FULL OF HINTS, TIPS and TECHNIQUES, such as how reflections affect the nature of water and its transparent characteristics.

You will learn about Colour Mixing, Cool & Warm Mixes, Coloured Greys, Aerial Perspective, Reflections on Water, applying Brush-strokes and Blending plus much, much more – watch out for one particularly simple tip.

First, Paul applies the main body of the stream, establishing those all-important dark accents, which will act as a counterfoil to forthcoming light and highlights.

Working from thin to thick, dark to light – you will understand how to exploit the layering process to achieve movement on the water surface and within its depths.

Learn how ripples and wavelets shatter the reflection of the sky; how surrounding structures, such as rocks and the main tree, block out the sun and form intense shadows that add depth to the flowing stream.

Watch as the simple addition of a highlight line where rocks meet water transforms the entire element, bringing life into it.

Finally, the addition of highlights and ticks of super-highlights complete this impasto layer and with it the entire composition is now ready for the techniques that will take it to another level …

AS PAUL MOVES ON TO THE FIRST OF HIS GLAZES AND TINTS…..

Firstly he glazes the sky – bringing that back to life through a blue glaze and for the sunlight clouds, a yellow glaze.

Then he moves on to the first layer of trees in the distant background – these he treats to a variety of glazes; each performing a different function – you will need to see this to appreciate how glazes work.

This episode is finished off with a couple of tints applied around the central tree – one of the focal points of this practice painting – which, in-of-themselves will add to your understanding of the potential within oil painting.
