My freshly incised rendition of a classic punishment from the Laws of Hammurabi: "If a fire breaks out in the house of a nobleman and the man who comes to extinguish the fire casts his (covetous) eye upon the furnishing of the house’s owner and takes them, that man will be cast into that same fire." My rendition of another famous passage of Enuma Elish as ceramic wall art, shown from three different angles. This passage is from the beginning of tablet 5, where Marduk creates the sky out of the corpse of the vanquished Tiamat and imposes order on the stars and planets within it, appointing the moon god Nanna/Sin to rule the night and designating the specifics of the moon cycle. This plaque has my bilingual Sumerian and Hebrew rendition of one of the few unaltered reflexes of cuneiform literature found in the Bible, the saying describing the strong ties of close friendship and cooperation, “a three-ply cord cannot be (easily) cut,” found in Ecclesiastes 4: 12. It is first attested in the Old Babylonian period (3700+ years ago) in the Sumerian tale Gilgamesh and Huwawa. The full quote, made by Gilgamesh in an attempt to encourage his boon companion Enkidu to join him in attacking Huwawa, the guardian of the Cedar Forest, is: ‘Stop, Enkidu! Two men (together) will not die, reed bundles (for aiding boats with flotation) will not sink! No one cuts a three-layered rope! On the city wall, water does not overwhelm anyone! Fire is not extinguished in a reed hut! You help me, and I shall help you: how can we not succeed?
