Put it in the Sparkleator - Sparkle Polishing
I've been pretty busy working on customers' proprietary projects over the past weeks and haven't really been able to post about anything I've printed. So, I'm doing a writeup on a silly little technique I came up with for things that I make for my daughter.
She wanted a princess crown.
with sparkles (of course).
I browsed around on thingiverse and found a crown that looked like it might be suitable. I found one I liked here. Then I found an idea for adding glitter to the printed object here. The glitter polishing idea, by RichRap (who has an amazing blog here, you're missing out if you're into 3D printing and haven't read it) looked intriguing, but could only easily be used across a few layers of the print.
(important note. Simply using the conventional method of white school glue and sparkles would be too straight forward and easy, so that was not an option.)
Then I thought about vapor polishing and how the surface of the model is pretty much a viscous fluid for about 30 seconds after treatment...
Crown was printed in purple ABS and tossed into the vapor polisher. Once it was polished, I removed the lid and shook sparkles all over the part.
After the part dried, the sparkles were nicely embedded into the ABS and most were covered over with a thin clear coating of ABS.
The princess loved it and renamed my vapor polishing setup, "The Sparkleator".
She also wanted a smily sparkly version of our scary clowns (see link for attribution and file source). Cerberus333 was nice enough to accommodate the request and we made this.
As I have time to play around with this method, I plan on listing instructions and ideas on thngiverse here.
If anyone reads this and tries it out, I'd love to hear about what you made!
A few more Creepy Clowns
In my last post, I put up some pics of 1 of the creepy clown models I printed from models designed by Thingiverse user Cerberus333. He actually put up 10 different creepy clown busts. They're all pretty cool.
Here are two more. His models can be downloaded for free here. Cerberus333 is a prolific contributor to the thingiverse file sharing site. Check out his vast body of work here.
When I was preparing the one with the pointy hat for vapor polishing, I accidentally dripped a blob of material under his eye that came out looking like a tear. Pretty cool effect : )
Creepy Clowns! 3D Printed Props for The Haunted Barn n Trail - Camden, DE
About a month ago, I put up a blog post about some 3D printed props I was making for a haunted house. Since then, we've refined the plan for what I will be making for them. One room in the haunted house will have about 30 miniature creepy clown busts mounted around the room. Everyone I've described this to thinks its pretty creepy.
I've been fortunate enough to connect with some great 3D graphic designers and artists who have given me permission to use their work.
This post will showcase the first few models I've printed. First is Evil Clown by Trick Monkey. I printed this in white ABS at 150um layer height, then vapor polished. This model is for sale in the artist's store available 3D printed at a smaller scale in a number of different materials on shapeways. Also, check out some of his other artwork at his website.
I also have two models that I printed from artist Shane Campbell. Prints of these models in a number of different materials at a smaller scale are available from his shapeways store as well.
And finally, I have some models provided by Thingiverse user Cerberus333. He made me 10 models and I've only gotten to 1 of them so far. His models can be downloaded for free here. Cerberus333 is a prolific contributor to the thingiverse file sharing site. Check out his vast body of work here.
