Newt had gotten himself into a rut. Staring at the same piece of tissues over and over again until he got dizzy tended to do that to him. He wasn't expecting any new shipments of samples for another day, so he'd decided to take a walk around the building to take his mind off of things.
Of course, his mind was never really off of his work. Not really, anyway. He was thinking of the weird similarities he'd seen in the DNA sequences between two different specimens as he walked farther and farther into the building, and had begun to think about the structure of the helices when he realized he was hopelessly lost.
He didn't see anyone in the immediate area, but he knew that didn't necessarily mean anything here.
"Uh, hello?" he said aloud. "Anyone here?"
