He had a half-open bottle of wine when he entered the room. The liquid was already half full, apparently this was not the first one he had drunk, for the girl's luck or bad luck.
"So Micheletto couldn't keep you out there?" Her voice tried not to sound shaky, but it was in vain. The man managed to feel the timbre fail while she spoke, which left him with an upset stomach, something that had nothing to do with drinking.
"He didn't even try." He turned another glass down his throat, when he finished it, he threw it against the wall. The pieces shattered into so many pieces that it was almost impossible to count like that, so far away, as she was beside the bed. "How much longer are we going to stay like this, Lucrezia?"
The question came out more like a plea, a pain went through his chest and throat, this was all reflected in a crease between his eyebrows. The blonde swallowed a few times and had to restrain herself to maintain the firmness she had sworn to have.
"As long as necessary, Cesare." The focus of his eyes did not leave the older brother's face, no sword fight had ever been crossed with such determination as to what was carried in that look.
"Then at least tell me why ..."
"You know the reason." She spoke right then, to cut him. “We cannot continue with this anymore. I ran away from a Sforza, yes, but here at the Vatican I find another one when I enter. I will not be able to sleep well until my husband is no longer named as such, so I will not sleep with you until that happens.”
"I swear ..." His choked plea had been said more like a whisper than anything else, his eyes were so closed that they seemed to hide old tears. "I swear I'm trying my best to make it happen, sister ... But you can't deprive me of your warmth and affection just because I couldn't shut up the unnecessary man!"
Lucrezia didn't need to say another word, Césare had to look away, he couldn't take it anymore. No human being should go through what he was going through, being deprived of his love inside and out.
“There must be another reason ... This cannot be the only one. Please explain to me!” He took quick steps towards the girl, who missed a heartbeat. Silence was the owner of the word, their breathing was choppy; for the first time they had been so close since when Césare went to visit her younger sister at her husband's house a few weeks ago.
The wind that night seemed to exchange more words with the leaves of the tall trees than the two were speaking at that moment. His fingers brushed each other, asking for more, asking for warmth, forbidden desire. Lucrezia finally looked at her hands as she withdrew them from her silent request.
“Now I know what it feels like to want, but not to be able. Of wanting and desiring it, but not doing it.” He hissed through his lips. The brunette put his hands on her chin and made her look up, but the sword fight did not start again when he did. Both eyes now reflected sadness.
“Tell me, my love. Tell me what prevents you, and this will be prevented from holding you back.” He also started to lower his voice. He expected any response, any request, but he did not expect what came next.
“I am pregnant, Cesare,” she choked on a sob. "And I think I'm looking at the father right now."
