Star Trek 1x19 "Arena." Why is this episode so fondly remembered? All you ever hear about is Kirk's fight versus the Gorn on Cestus III, how he cleverly fashioned a rudimentary lathe-- er, I mean, a mortar. But deal with the fact that the episode never establishes the widely accepted fan idea that the Gorn come from a low-gravity planet or whatever, and then you've just got a stuntman in a lizard suit moving really slowly.

But the imagery is still iconic. They filmed the fight scenes at Vasquez Rocks, and for some reason, it's one of the most widely recognized scenes in Star Trek history. Never mind that Kirk goes on a highly un-evolved vengeance quest in this episode, and never mind that this episode continues Star Trek's preoccupation with omnipotent beings intervening in our affairs -- no, the thing everyone remembers (and parodies) about this episode is Kirk versus the Gorn.
