Finally some good weather to go outside and enjoy a good cocktail and a good smoke! I chose a light smoke, the Dunhills, it's an OK cigar to enjoy over a Long Island Iced Tea. Have a great weekend guys! 🚬💯🔥🍸🙌🏻. . #cigar #cigars #dunhill #dunhillcigars #spring #springsunshine #cocktails #cocktailporn #longislandicedtea #longisland #longislandicetea #instagood #instadaily #instawhisky #firewaterxo #shotoniphone #apple #shotoniphonex #cluj #clujnapoca #clujlife #cetatuie #transilvania #romania #pergola #weekend #weekendvibes #saturday (at Cetăţuie)
Visit Cluj-Napoca – The Heart of Transylvania (Part II)
Visit Cluj-Napoca This is not the first time that we visit Cluj-Napoca, one of the most prominent and iconic cities of Transylvania (Romania). Before pressing on, please read the previous article pertaining to the city: “Visit Kolozsvár/Klausenburg/Cluj Napoca in the Heart of Transylvania”. Now, since we have already discussed many aspects pertaining to the cultural significance of the city, we shall dive directly into the sections that you are most certainly waiting for.
TRANSPORT:
Cluj-Napoca has the most effortless transport system in Romania. Getting around the city is cheap with tickets costing no more than 0.80 Eurocents (and you can use it two times). Such benefits are rare around the globe for such low prices. The most commonly used means of conveyance within the city are the buses and trolleybuses. Their stations are spread intelligently throughout the city and you can use the same ticket to travel with all of them. This means that if you have enough tickets, you can get around very cheaply and efficiently. We must draw your attention to the Line 25 of the trolleybus system for that is the longest route within the bounds of Cluj-Napoca. It runs from the Mănăştur neighbourhood all the way to the Gheorgheni neighbourhood almost seamlessly. That line is your best bet if you long for a tour around town (for Cluj-Napoca has no sightseeing buses).
Cluj-Napoca is served by the Avram Iancu International Airport. Handling more than 1.5 million passengers each year, it is the second-busiest airport in Romania (beaten only by the Henri Coandă International Airport of Bucharest). Located 9 kilometres east of the city centre, the airport is the most important one in Transylvania.
We do not recommend using the Romanian railway system if you are not forced by circumstances to do so. This may seem harsh at first but we assure you that it is one of the worst railway systems in Europe. General sluggishness, poor conditions and the presence of conmen are but a few negative things that characterise it. Delays of up to four hours can be experienced if you are travelling from far away. Please read some of our previous posts pertaining to Romanian cities and see for yourself (about Sibiu or Bucharest, for example).
SIGHTS AND ACTIVITIES:
We have mentioned numerous interesting sights in our previous post but now we shall dig deeper. First and foremost, you should head straight up to the Cetăţiue hill and bask in the brilliance of the skyline of Cluj-Napoca. Its close proximity to the city centre and the central park is an excellent reason for you to head there right away. You can even find a smaller recreational area up there with numerous benches and walkways. Oh, and do not mind the kissing youngsters, they are harmless (wink).
Next up, you should hop over to the Piaţa Muzeului (Museum Square) and admire the Obelisk of Carolina (erected to commemorate the visit of the Austrian Empress Carolina Augusta and her husband, Emperor Franz I). It is also the square where you can find the entrance to the National History Museum of Transylvania. With over 400.000 cultural artefacts, it is bound to cause you a few gasps of wonder. Oh, and let us not forget about the Franciscan Church on the east side of the square.
We know that what we are about to recommend is a little bit different from what you might be used to but we promise you that it is worth it. If you happen to find yourself in the city centre, do consider visiting the historically vital Hajongard Cemetery. There, you will find crypts and graves that pertain to ages long gone (such as the World Wars and even before). Keep a lookout for the crypt that looks exactly like a pyramid. The cemetery is the resting place of famous Transylvanian polyglot and mathematician Apáczai Csere János and his wife Aletta van der Maet. Other notable graves include those of: Ion Agărbiceanu, Emil Racoviţă and even Brassai Sámuel.
If you wish to delve deeper into the cultural meaning of Cluj-Napoca, make sure you go and grab a beer at the moody Irish & Music Pub. It is a pub, essentially, but it often hosts live music shows. Even as you enter, you’ll see tons of posters from previous shows (some of them dating back more than 20 years). This makes the Irish & Music Pub a musical and cultural archive, in a sense. Prices are extremely low by most standards and the general atmosphere of the establishment is welcoming (even if somewhat dark).
If you are up for some adventure, consider visiting the notorious Hoia-Baciu Forest to the north-west of the city. Renowned for its UFO sightings and paranormal activities, you are bound to find a few interesting things to delve in (even if only talking to the locals). In spite of the popular beliefs, we assure you that the forest itself is welcoming and, of course, gorgeous.
CONCLUSION:
Cluj-Napoca has even been voted the youth capital of Europe in 2015 and the flamboyant nightlife directly reflects this. There are so many pubs and restaurants to choose from that you are bound to find one to your liking. Sip a wine and enjoy one of the most idyllic places in Transylvania!
