Paysage, Parc National des Cevennes près de Florac, 2006.
The Cevennes, roughly the southeastern flank of the Massif Central, is a rugged territory. It was the one area of Gaul never firmly held by the Romans, and much later it was a hotbed of resistance to the centralizing powers of France. It was and remains firmly protestant (Calvinist) in an otherwise mostly Roman Catholic state. It is also one of the most wonderful parts of France to walk. Robert Louis Stevenson may have witnessed this very scene as he was making his trek with Modestine his donkey. That walk was eventually memorialized in Stevenson's Travels With a Donkey in the Cevennes.
