I've seen several dozen posts about the first movie's K/S Sloppy Vulcan Hand Makeouts In Medbay but not a SINGLE ONE about how the first movie basically said "What's the point of being an intelligent life form? I think it's love :)" and like I just got here but I'm nowhere near over that yet. IDEK if the fandom consensus is whether it was corny or not, I thought that was tender as hell. Don't even get me started on the mainplot and subplot parallels. People have already written essays, I'm sure.
I’m sure they have but I guess I’m cynical because that’s never a message I got from that movie. Now that you say it, I do recognize it.
The parallels are super intentional (Gene Roddenberry wrote the novelization and made no bones about how HE thought the movie should go). Kirk and Spock are reflected through Decker and Illia almost identically; it’s been a long time since they last saw each other, something deeply important to Decker and Spock was destroyed because of V’Ger, Spock and Illia were both inadvertently harmed by V’Ger, Spock chooses to stay with the ship and crew at the end because he has nothing for him on Vulcan, Decker chooses to merge with V’Ger because he has nothing left for him in Starfleet.
