CFCCA - MANDY BARKER HONG KONG SOUP

Yesterday I visited CFCCA (Centre for Chinese Contemporary Art) in Manchester to see Mandy Barker’s exhibition- Hong Kong Soup. I thought the exhibition would be useful for my own work as the exhibition is inspired and interested in plastic waste in the ocean.

I found the exhibition interesting as the aesthetic quality of the photography, draws you in and then encourages the viewer to question and look closer at their own social responsibility when it comes to waste.

A key aim of my own work is to raise awareness around the current and growing issues of waste in the fashion industry, using bold messages and links to campaigns such as the ‘Thirty Day Test’ and ‘Visible Mending’.

This small gallery in the city centre is opening its own library and archive later this year. The idea of a space dedicated to celebrating contemporary Chinese culture within Manchester’s Nothern Quarter, an area known for being home to many creatives and bohemian attitudes, speaks to the celebration of the mixing of cultures within modern culture.

Today we visited the Centre for Chinese Contemporart Art (CFCCA) in Manchester City Centre. Whilst at the gallery we viewed their current exhibition; ‘Remnants of an Electronic Past’ by Aaajiao, and we also had the opportunity to view the artist residency space the gallery offers. The current artists in residency Kuo I-Chen invited us in and spoke to us a little about what he working on during his time here.I-Chen is a Taiwanese artist who is currently working on a project named ‘Stupin’. Stupid is a platform similar to that of Airbnb, it allows artists to essentially trade their working/ living spaces with other artists all over the world to enable them to experience work in different countries.

Aaajiao, whose exhibition was currently on show, is a trained computer programmer, his current ‘ROAEP’ exhibition asks the question ‘Where does software go to die?’ and his work represents a digital graveyard. One of his works that really stood out to me was ‘Tennis for none’. The work is based on one of the earliest developed video games ‘Tennis for Two’, however in his work both players are the computer, to me this highlights how technology is taking over our world, and a common theory than possibly once day machine will overtake humans.

Whilst visiting galleries I always like to explore and document the different ways in which artists will display their work, and so I’ve included a couple of photographs of how Aaajiao has hung his work using fishing wire.
