   Craig hid his snickers behind his hand, holding the phone a bit away from him so that it wouldn’t pick him up.  When Ekira claimed not to understand him, the grin slipped off his face, and he looked over at them.  He was pretending to place an order to the City Wok restaurant, just to hear the proprietor talk about how ‘shitty’ all their food was.  It was fine to make fun of the voice because it was actually just a white guy putting on an exaggerated Chinese accent—not that the kids in town hadn’t found it hilarious even before they discovered that.

   “No, see, it’s funny,” he insisted.  Of course, literal pissbaby Ekira wouldn’t understand.  “’Cause it sounds like he’s saying ‘shit’—”  Realizing he was explaining the joke and that that stopped it from being funny, Craig sighed and hung up on Lu Kim, who was undoubtedly cursing the little asshole kids in this town for denying him another sale.

   “Obviously, you don’t get it.  You’re boring.”

“So you went off too, an’ y’didn’t tell me?” Crossing their arms, Ekira’s brow furrows in anger, though by the slight lilt of their tone, it’s clear that any offense that was taken was out of nothing but lighthearted humor. “For shame, Henry— an’ t’think, we could have traveled together!” Shaking their head, Ekira “harrumphed” dramatically, pausing momentarily in their playful dramatics to eye what it was Henry was dipping through. Their eyes soon widen, however once Henry begins to unravel the blanket from his sack, tone incredulous as they hesitantly reach out a hoof. “This— is for me?” Taking a few steps forward, the glossy shine in their eyes becomes all the more clearer, a small trail of mucus slowly dribbling down their face. “Henry, you didn’t…” Ekira’s words are caught in their throat, retracting their hands as if they were afraid to take it. “I didn’t even get you anythin’, I…” / @cflight

He doesn't want Ekira to know why he has to leave town sometimes— doesn't want them to know that the people from that dark place are still tailing him in some capacity. It's a lot better than it was now that Doctor Brenner has succumbed to his death, but he's still a government property as far as the state is concerned. Every so often, things get dicey again, and he has no choice but to fall off the grid entirely.

                    At their hesitation, Henry's brows furrow gently. He has to constantly remind himself that their sensitivity is much higher than the average person's; that they more accurately reflect him than they do the rest of the world.
