Part 1
Bryce
I wake up not having slept at all. Tossing and turning in bed all night.
It’s my one day off in the whole week. I talked to the chief to get this day off. When she asked me why I just said personal reasons. Not wanting to say more.
I lie in bed and when I turn around I see Lunes is still fast asleep. I push the blue comforter aside and slowly get up to not wake her.
She stirs and I hold my breath but then she sighs, turns around, and keeps on sleeping.
I get dressed and take my surfboard and head down to the beach.
Needing to get my head around how I’m going to feel about seeing my dad after all these years.
Did he miss me? Did he ever ask about me? It feels weird and scary as all get out. It’s as if I don’t even know him. Or at least not the part where he committed a crime.
I don’t like to talk about what my parents did. How many people they hurt with their actions. I sometimes wish I could erase that part. But if I did? I would’ve never met Lunes, and I would’ve never made such awesome friends at Edenbrook.
I sigh. I put my surfboard into the sand and just sat there on the sand, ankles crossed. Digging my toes into the sand.
Not really seeing anyone.
There are just a couple of people around the beach at 5.30 in the morning.
I close my eyes briefly. Just focusing on my breathing.
Hearing seagulls make their morning calls, smelling the sea, almost tasting the salty air and the rich flowery scent. Engulfing me in a sweet embrace.
When I reopen my eyes I can see a bit clearer. I get up, dust off the sand from my shorts, and get into the water.
When I sit on my surfboard and feel the water on my hands I feel more at peace than anywhere else in the world.
Everything fades into the background when I’m in the water. It’s just me and the sea.
I get up and catch a wave just riding it out. I do it a couple of times until I feel I’m ready to face Luna. Look into her eyes and lie to her. I hate not telling her. We tell each other everything. But I guess a part of me is just scared to talk about my past with Luna.
When I get out of the water, I shake off the remaining water out of my hair.
It could use a trim. I haven’t even noticed that it's gotten longer.
I get my surfboard and walk the short distance home. When I get to our beautiful home I just take in the view as I lean the surfboard against the wall of the house and take a shower outside.
Leaning one hand on the wall of the shower for strength.
Water dripped from my hair, past my shoulders. And I watch as the water disappears into the drain.
When the water turns cold I turn the shower off, grab a towel and walk inside.
I see Lunes is up making breakfast. Being her cheerful self. I smile softly.
She’s alone in the kitchen which means Keiki must be still asleep since it’s a Saturday. She’ll probably meet with her study group later.
Lunes looks up.
”Looks like someone was up early,“ she smiles while drinking her chamomile tea with some brown sugar.
”What no coffee?“ I tease her.
She points a finger at me.
”You know damn well I can’t drink coffee. Now you’re just rubbing it in,“ she says, sipping her tea slowly.
I grin and turn towards the coffee machine and my chipper smile fades away. Now that my back is turned I don’t have to smile. I don’t have to pretend to be cheery when I’m not.
My reflection in the toaster stares back at me. My brown eyes, usually so bright and vibrant, seem tired and worn out.
I sigh quietly and pour some coffee into my favorite mug I got from Lunes and Keiki.
”Hot as fuck surgeon“ Making me smile as I put two teaspoons of sugar inside and stir it. The spoon clinks against the porcelain.
Making the sound echo louder in the kitchen than I thought it would. I turn around as I blow over my coffee, to not burn my tongue.
I can hear Lunes talk about some art piece of a student she has to assess but she doesn’t want to give him too good of a grade, but she also doesn’t want to give him a bad one. So naturally, she feels torn.
I listen with half an ear and sip from my coffee.
”Then I think I’ll try out my new sex toy.“
Luna's words get me out of my haze.
I look up and grin.
”Please I want in,“ I say, a bit too enthusiastic.
She grunts.
”What is it about guys getting excited about sex toys,“ she says and gets out some fruit loops from the cupboard.
I watch her but don’t say anything about her eating too much sugar. What’s the point? She’ll eat it anyway. Though I have to grin because her stubbornness is hot as hell.
”Trust me if you were in my shoes you’d find it hot too,“ I say, grabbing a banana from the fruit basket.
She rolls her eyes.
”As if. That’s like asking if I get turned on by you using sex toys,“ she says angrily shoving fruit loops into her mouth.
”And do you?“ I ask, wanting to know if she’d be turned on by it.
But I just want to escape this conversation. Luna sees everything.
It’s why our relationship works so well. Because we talk about everything and anything. We’re each others safe haven.
At least until I decided not to tell her where I’m going today. It’s hard to smile every day when you don’t feel like it.
I look down at my coffee as if it holds all the answers I need.
Luna laughs and I look up.
”I mean yeah sure,“ she’s thinking about it and I just sip my coffee and shake my head smirking.
We finish our breakfast in silence. Each of us hangs on to our own thoughts.
I put the dishes in the dishwasher. Luna gave me her bowl and her spoon and I put both in.
”Wanna watch a movie?“ She asks hugging me.
The perfect distraction before I have to see my dad.
My posture stiffens at that.
She notices my stiffness.
”Uhh or how about a massage? I bought these essential oils. Lavender scented,“ she says, wiggling her eyebrows.
”Admit it. You just want to get your hands on me,“ I say.
She laughs.
”That is very true. Come on, we'll have some fun. Forget the movie. Getting you naked is way more fun than a movie,“ she says and drags me to our bedroom.
A massage sounds really good.
Hopefully, it’ll ease the tension in my shoulders.
Two hours later…
Who knew I’d be this scared? Well, terrified is more like it.
I blow out a breath and hate myself for hiding this from Luna.
We don’t keep secrets. And it’s not for a lack of trust. It’s just I wanted to do this on my own. I know she would’ve come along and supported me if I asked her.
She’s the kindest, most supportive person I’ve ever met. Who gives selflessly without expecting anything in return. I’m fucking lucky to have her.
My heart squeezes when I think of not having her here by my side. To lean on. To draw strength from.
But I wanted to get a feel for the whole situation first. Keiki doesn’t know either.
I stare ahead at the Halawa Correctional Facility. I learned that they put Dad here instead of Maui, fearing someone could attack him in prison there.
The sun is cruelly beating down on me as I’m sitting in my car sweating just thinking of going inside.
I push the hair that’s gotten slightly longer out of my face, get out of the car, and enter the building.
When I’m inside I get patted down and have to answer a bunch of questions. I go through the motions like a robot. Like an outside-of-a-body experience. As if it’s not happening to me. Rather someone else.
I get a visitor's badge, clip it to my jeans, and get directed to the visitor’s area.
When I enter the room I see an older man in an orange jumpsuit sitting at a table. All by himself. Hunched over and completely immersed in his meal.
I look at the guard and he points me to that exact table. I steel myself, gulp down my nausea, and walk in that direction.
When I sit down the man who looks so much like me looks up from his lunch which consists of some rice and beans with some chicken on the side.
His gaze looks gaunt and tired. As if the years haven’t been kind to him. I guess that’s what you get for robbing people of their money.
His brown eyes spark with recognition at seeing me.
”Hey Dad,“ I say, putting my hands on the table. Interlacing them.
He stops eating for a moment. To just look at me.
”Bryce. I didn’t expect to see you…“ he says the surprise clear in his voice.
I rub my neck to buy some time on what to say.
”I wasn’t sure if I would come but I…“ I say and bite my tongue.
He raises his eyebrows.
His former dark brown hair is now tinted with grey. Though it hasn’t lost its shine and wave.
”To what do I owe this honor of a visit from you then?“ He asks.
I sigh.
”Really? This is how it’s going to go? I knew I shouldn’t have come,“ I say about to get up.
His voice stops me in my tracks.
”I…please have a seat. I‘m sorry I didn’t mean it like that. I‘m happy you’re here to visit. Why didn’t you bring Keiki along?“ He asks, looking around as if my little sister will suddenly materialize out of thin air. Yeah right.
I sit back down and stare at him.
He’s a completely different guy. Gone is the arrogant smile. The vibrancy. All that is left is an empty shell of a guy.
I run my hand down my face. Already feeling completely exhausted.
”Keiki doesn’t know I’m here nor does Luna,“ I say and feel a knot form in my stomach. It feels like I’m betraying her trust. Both of their trust.
He looks confused.
”Who is Luna?“ He asks.
That’s right. He probably has no idea what’s been going on in my life. I feel like he stabbed me right in the heart.
Did mom not tell him when she visited? Did she even visit?
Should I have told him about Luna sooner? Maybe written him a letter? Would he have read my letter?
So many questions are circling inside my head. It’s giving me a headache. Maybe I can get some answers to my questions during my visit today.
I wet my dry lips. Wishing I’d had some water to sip from.
”Where to even begin?“ I ask myself.
He leans forward into his chair.
”We’ve got about 25 minutes until I have to go back into my cell. So maybe the speedy version would be good?“ He says a slow smile gracing his face and I can see traces of the dad I once knew. The one I grew up with.
Who took me to my first football game. Who let me throw my first party and wasn’t mad at all the party people and the pricey alcohol we consumed. Who bought me condoms and said just be safe son. I smile at that memory.
I’d like a chance to see that dad again someday. Without ghosts of the past haunting us.
”A lot has happened. I became a surgeon and finished my residency at Edenbrook Hospital in Boston. Moved back to Hawaii where I now live with my fiancé Luna,“ I smile as I talk about Luna.
My dad smiles.
”Tell me, is she good to you?“ he asks with laughter visible in his brown eyes.
I grin in turn.
”She’s the best dad. She’s an artist. She teaches at the University of Hawaii. We’re expecting soon so…“ I finish feeling my cheeks redden for some reason.
My dad has a proud expression on his face.
”I’m really happy for you son. After everything…“ He says.
”Why did you and mom do it, dad?“ I ask a question I’ve been looking for an answer to for a long time.
My dad leans back in his chair and seems to think hard about what to say.
”We did it for our family. We didn’t think we’d hurt anyone. After all, it was just money. Money some people had so much of, they didn’t know what to do with. So we took some of it for our own,“ he says.
”Dad. How could you think you wouldn’t hurt anyone? These people lost their money. Money that we spent. It was dirty money. Money we had no right to have,“ I say hissing trying to not let the past actions of my parents rob me of getting closure and finding some peace in knowing they regret what they did.
My dad nods.
”I know that now. But back then. I…We were selfish and only thought of ourselves, instead of thinking how many lives we would wreak havoc upon,“ he admits his voice gone hoarse as if he was holding back tears.
I have to gulp down some tears of my own. Trying to blink them away. Though some errand tears cover my eyelashes.
”Yeah you and mom screwed up dad. A lot. So many lives were ruined. Keiki and I went through hell in school. We became enemy number one overnight. I finished high school and got the hell out of there. But Keiks wasn’t so lucky. They attacked her on school grounds on her first day,“ I say still angry about that. My fists clench at the table. My teeth grind together.
”They what?“ He says, his voice gotten protective when I mentioned Keiki was attacked.
”Yeah. She told me,“ I say and I’m still angry about that.
He looks at me as if he can sense I’m still angry about it. I mean how couldn’t I be? But I’m trying to move forward. Holding grudges isn’t healthy. Lunes and I are building our life and our future together.
I know she’d love my parents to be in our children’s lives. To have two sets of grandparents for our twins and give them all the love they deserve.
I breathe out through my nose. Trying to reign in my emotions. I can fall apart later. When nobody is looking. This way I show a strong front. Without revealing anything.
”I know if I could go back in time…“ he starts his voice pleading.
”You can’t go back in time dad. There’s no time machine. All you can do now is try to earn back people's trust. Which is going to take some time.“
He stares at me and then looks away. Knowing it’s true.
I move on.
”How much longer have you got?“ I ask, wanting to know when he’s getting out.
It feels weird sitting here. Asking my dad all these questions. As If I’m getting to know him. Again.
After we’ve spent so much time apart. Not because we wanted to. It’s because the circumstances forced our hand.
He sighs as if he’s getting tired of hearing this question, and I bet he can’t wait to get out of prison.
”I’m getting out on parole. Five months and I’m a semi-free man again,“ he says longing in his voice.
His eyes gazed into space. As if he’s picturing getting out and feeling the sunshine on his face again.
I lean forward.
”That’s good to hear dad,“ I say and I’m about to open my mouth to say something when the guard indicates my visiting time is almost over. I nod and gesture for one more minute and he inclines his head.
”I’d like to meet Luna. She sounds nice,“ he looks at me and I can see tears glistening in his eyes.
I don’t answer him, because Luna doesn’t know I’m here today. And I don’t know how she’d feel visiting my father in prison. I feel shame about this part of my life. I haven’t done anything wrong. Though I still feel responsible.
I squeeze his shoulder and he puts his hand on my own for a brief second. I smile and walk towards the exit. Feeling tired. More exhausted than after a ten-hour surgery.
Getting into my car the first thing I do is cry. Where no one can see me. Crying for all the years we’ve been out of each other’s life. Because of one wrong decision. God. What a fucking mess.
I wipe away at my face and start the car, my hands shaking slightly. I sigh. Not again. I fucking hate it when my hands start to shake.
I just drove around for a while. When I sense I’m getting tired I turn towards the road to our house. When I arrived at the driveway I put the car in park and turned off the engine.
Just sitting there dreading going inside the house and facing a conversation with Lunes. She’d be the last person to judge me I know that. But I’m scared shitless.
I draw in a deep breath, gather my strength, and get outside the car.
Things will work out as they always do. I know they will.

A few days earlier
Hayley
“Have I told you how much I hate Christmas shopping?” Ethan says carrying shopping bags.
I hope he won’t fall. I grin. It would be fun though. I could definitely steal a kiss in the snow.
”Come on grumpy face. Don’t leave me hanging. I want to get Luna something special. She and Bryce will only stay a couple of days before they go back to Hawaii, and I want this visit to feel special for them.“
I can see Ethan sigh.
”Alright, fine. But only because I like Luna.“ He smiles.
”You’re like her big brother, it’s so cute.“
I grin and together we walk through the snow, crunching under our soled boots. White air is coming out of our mouths like puffy clouds.
It’s a beautiful white Christmas in Boston. As Ethan and I go from store to store to find a nice gift for Luna. Bryce’s is already wrapped. But we’re still looking for something for Luna.
Ethan heard of this local artist who makes beautiful art pieces. From handmade jewelry to paintings, even little glass figurines.
There’s something for everyone.
We enter the shop and see a woman with dark toffee-colored curls held back by a purple headband standing in front of a sculpture.
She looks up when she sees us and smiles. Her big brown eyes sparkle with joy.
”I’ll be right with you. Just give me a second.“
Ethan and I nod and admire the craftsmanship she has on display.
I can see that Ethan is standing next to the jewelry cases.
”Something caught your eye?“
I ask him and he nods towards a moon necklace. I admire the pretty golden moon hanging on a dainty gold chain.
The artist just walks towards us as Ethan is about to ask a question.
The artist smiles at us.
”I’m Teresa. How can I help you?“
”We were interested in that necklace. You don’t do engravings by any chance, do you?“
Teresa nods.
”I do. I can do it by the end of the day. Would that work for you?“
Ethan and I nod.
”It’s for a friend of ours she’s expecting twins next year.“
”Oh wow that’s wonderful. I might have an idea in regards to the necklace.“
Ethan and I look at each other and just shrug. Then we nod at Teresa to go ahead.
”Why don’t you combine a silver and a gold moon necklace? That way you can write both names on separate necklaces.“
”That’s a wonderful idea.“ I nod enthusiastically.
”Alright, perfect. I’ll need the names of the twins and an address where I can deliver the present.“
We give Teresa the names.
”It’s Kehlani Mae and Alaia Rose.“
Teresa writes it down, we pay, and exit her shop. I look at Ethan and smile at him.
”This was the easiest Christmas purchase we ever made.“
We pass some Christmas carolers who sing jingle bells on the way to our apartment.
We need to get some last Christmas decorations done. Then later we’ll pick up Luna and Bryce from the airport.
I smile at Ethan. Snowflakes glisten in his dark hair.
It’s so beautiful to celebrate Christmas in Boston.
Luna
Ethan and Hayley picked us up from the airport. And we are on our way to their apartment.
Jenner nestled between us. I pet him and he leans into me.
Bryce just stares at me.
”Lunes kept asking if you guys will bring Jenner along. It’s like I don’t even exist anymore.“ He says and pouts like a three-year-old.
”Look at that Bryce got replaced by a dog. That’s truly precious.“ Ethan grins.
”Don’t worry B. We‘ll have plenty of snuggle time together.“
I grin and he smiles.
”Thank god I bought new earplugs. So go ahead and have fun.“
Ethan mutters.
”Aww Ethan, that's so cute of you.“
Hayley says and we all grin.
We arrive at Ethan and Hayley’s place and Ethan helps us with our suitcases. We rode the elevator to their place. As soon as they open the door we get greeted by our friends.
”Surprise.“
Bryce and I grin. Poor Ethan looks like he just got the scare of his life.
Sienna, Rafael, Elijah, Jackie, and Aurora stand there looking super festive in their ugly Christmas sweaters.
Ethan turns to Hayley as Bryce and I walk inside exchanging hugs and kisses.
“You know, when you said ‘Christmas party,’ this isn’t what I was expecting,” Ethan says.
Hayley smirks.
”I gave them a key. So that they could make this surprise happen.“
Ethan just nods.
We all laugh at that.
Four days later…
Bryce
It’s our last day in Boston before we have to fly back home to Hawaii tomorrow. It’s been a lot of fun. We’ve gone to the Christmas market, been in a snowball fight which I won fair and square. Had a competition for decorating gingerbread houses and made some snow angels.
Though the best part is right now. Spending time with our friends.
We’re all sitting, eating, and having a great time. With some festive Christmas music, Hayley put on.
The Christmas tree is decorated and glows. The presents have been put under the tree. It’s perfect.
Luna grins at me and points to her gingerbread man. The poor gingerbread man looks slightly disfigured as she’s dunking the gingerbread man in her hot cocoa, topped with whipped cream.
”Look at the drunk gingerbread man.“
”More like the gingerbread man enjoying his jacuzzi.“ I grin.
”Filled with cream.“
Everyone laughs.
”You guys are just weird.“ Jackie remarks.
Luna just grins at her while I pull her close.
”Are you ready to pop?“ Jackie asks.
Luna leans back in her chair.
”I still have 2 and a half months to go.“
Luna groans and looks at me while I’m enjoying some whiskey. Courtesy of Ethan getting out the good stuff.
”I had to pee five times last night because your kids decided to sit on my bladder last night.“
”Oh so they’re my kids now?“
Luna grins while I just smile and shake my head at her.
Jackie grins at Luna.
”You know that’s always something I liked about you, Luna. You don’t take Bryce’s bullshit. You serve it right up to him.“
”I have ovaries of steel. I wanted to say balls of steel, but that’ll offend Ethan’s poor sensibilities.“ She smirks and grins her blue-green eyes twinkling with mischief.
Ethan turns in Luna's direction.
”Excuse me?“ He exclaims while everyone else just laughs.
Luna smiles softly at Ethan.
”It’s okay for a man to be sensitive Ethan. We still love you. It doesn’t make you less of a man if you’re in tune with your emotions.“
Ethan stares at her and then just smiles and shakes his head at her.
Luna
Bryce and Ethan stand together talking, not realizing they‘re standing under a mistletoe.
I clear my throat and both guys look up.
Ethan raises an eyebrow. His blue eyes were eyeing me questioningly.
”Do you realize where you’re standing under?“
They both look up with horror.
”Dibs not it.“ Bryce says.
I grin, having the time of my life.
”Oh that won’t work here babe. Just give him a kiss.“
Everyone waits with bated breath.
”Why do I have to kiss him? Can’t he initiate the kiss? He’s the taller one.“
Bryce complains.
”I’m not letting you out of this one. You too Ramsey. Be a dear and give my very hot fiancé a kiss. It can be on the nose too. I won’t judge.“
Ethan just stares at her.
Bryce tries to back up.
”Dude no. Don’t listen to her. Don’t let her bully you into doing everything she tells you, just because she’s pregnant. Lu stop it.“
I laugh and wait for them to kiss.
Meanwhile, Ethan gives Bryce a kiss on his cheek. Thankfully Bryce hasn’t turned around. Otherwise, it would’ve been a kiss for the ages.
I capture the moment on my phone.
Bryce pouts, but soon he smiles again and tugs me towards him to give me a loud kiss.
”I can’t believe it. Your lips almost made contact with Ethan Ramsey.“
Bryce grins.
”Yeah. Yeah. Let’s go get some food and pretend this never happened.“
”Fat chance. I’ll be teasing you over this for a while.“
”Oh, shocker.“
I slap his ass.
Bryce looks shocked, but then he grins.
”You’re lucky you’re cute.“ B says while pulling me close. I grin and kiss him.
Bryce
Elijah and Aurora had to go because they were both on call. The hospital is short-staffed, and with other doctors being on vacation they volunteered to be on call if they were needed.
They both hugged me and Luna wishing us a merry Christmas.
So now it’s Ethan, Sienna, Hayley, Rafael, Luna, Jenner, and me.
We sat around the Christmas tree.
”Is it time to open presents? So freaking exciting.“ Lunes sits there looking super cute in her white cashmere dress and her hair pulled up in a bun.
Sienna grins looking eager to open some presents too.
”Anyone who says they don’t care about the presents is just lying.“ I comment earning a fist bump from Rafael.
Hayley grins.
”Trust me Hayley dragged me from store to store until we found the right gift.“
Hayley rolls her eyes.
”He’s lying through his teeth. He loved every second of it.“ Hayley grins.
I pick a dark green present and gently push it toward Ethan.
”You go first. Lunes and I both chose the present for you. Hope you’ll like it.“
Ethan eyes us as he gently opens the present.
”It’s nothing weird is it?“ He asks afraid, it’ll be some weird shit.
”It’s not sex toys. Just open it.“
”That makes me feel only slightly better.“ Ethan says.
He peels away the wrapping paper.
”Whiskey?“ He asks.
I grin.
”Read the label.“
He sighs but reads the label out loud.
”Only the best friends get promoted to godfather.“
He looks shocked and slightly uncomfortable by all the attention focused on him.
Sienna, Rafael, and Hayley lean closer to Ethan to read the label too.
Even Jenner leans into Ethan, thinking it might be treats for him. Sorry, buddy whiskey isn’t for dogs.
Sienna sniffles.
”That is so beautiful.“ She grabs a tissue.
”I don’t know what to say. I feel very honored. I’d love to be the twin's godfather.“
Ethan says and holds the whiskey bottle close. As if it’s his most prized possession.
”Thank you, I haven't expected this at all.“ He looks so touched as if he’s about to cry.
I smile and have tears in my eyes too. Luna leans into me and I snuggle her close.
Hayley clears her throat.
”I don’t know if we can top that. But Ethan and I got you two something.“
Hayley hands both of us a present.
I tear into mine and hold out two onesies.
When I see the onesies I smile.
One says ”If you think I’m good-looking you should see my dad“
The other says ”Best Daddy ever“
I look down and start to realize March is going to be here faster than we think. It’s all hitting me now. I’m going to be a dad in just 2 and half months. Holy shit.
That’s pretty scary, to be honest, but as I look around and see laughter and love in my friend's eyes and Luna who is so touched I know I can do this. Because I’m not alone.
Luna starts to cry and Sienna hands her the box of tissues. Luna takes one and daps at her eyes.
I am excited to see what Luna got from Ethan and Hayley.
She unwraps the present and sees a box that says Artemis. Must be some jewelry store.
She opens the box and gets out two necklaces.
One silver and one gold moon necklace. She stares at it and then gives it a closer look.
When she hands me the necklaces and starts to cry again I take a look.
The necklaces are engraved.
It’s the names we’ve chosen for the twins.
Kehlani Mae on the gold necklace and Alaia Rose on the silver necklace.
”We bought two pairs for both you and Bryce. In case you both wanted to wear them.“
Hayley says and hands me a golden-wrapped present too. I open it and find the same two necklaces as Luna does.
”Wow, guys. I don’t know what to say. You made this Christmas very special for both of us.“
Ethan and Hayley smile.
”Christmas lost its special side to me a long time ago … but you’ve brought some of that magic back.” Ethan says.
”Aww. We love you too Ethan.“ Luna says and hugs him. He endures it but smiles softly.
When Luna and Ethan break apart everyone else opens up their presents.
Sienna got some lush products she wanted. Hayley’s gift.
A red sweater for Sienna. A blue one for Hayley from Rafael.
Grinch socks for Ethan from me.
Luna and I got Sienna and Hayley matching bracelets with an engraved dolphin. They were both excited, to say the least.
Rafael got a colorful painting made by Luna with all the wonderful places in Brazil. So that he might miss his home less. He was very touched by the gesture.
On the next day, we hugged each other goodbye and boarded our flight back home to Honolulu.
All in all. We had a beautiful exchange of gifts. There were some tears and laughs, but we spent some wonderful days with our friends. Ones that we consider family.

It’s Saturday. It’s a beautiful day in Honolulu, Hawaii. Warm and sunny exactly what the doctor ordered. I smile.
We opened the door leading out into the garden. A fresh ocean breeze is wafting inside the kitchen. I breathe in the scent and my body instantly calms down. Moving to Honolulu was the best decision we’ve ever made.
I look over at Luna who’s standing barefoot in the kitchen.
Luna and I are at home making breakfast and listening to DNCE song kissing strangers.
It’s my favorite time of the day. To make some breakfast. Well, Luna is making breakfast I’m just eating.
Damn, I have to put in some time at the gym. Maybe I can convince Luna to come with me. I laugh at that as I put my arms around Luna who leans into me.
Luna puts the stove off and I help her to put the food on the table outside in the garden.
“Don’t eat all the goods,“ Luna squats my hand away as I steal some bacon.
“Why? I can see only one snack and the job is taken,“ I say and Luna just shakes her head at me.
“You’re unbelievable you know that?“ she says and throws a napkin at me.
“You mean I’m unbelievably attractive? I know thanks,“ I say and Luna just laughs.
“And so humble too. I hope you won’t be too disappointed when I beat your very attractive ass later at minigolf,“ she says eating some bacon and we share some of her fruit salad.
I stop putting fruit on my plate and I eye her grinning.
“Really? And how will you do that? You usually lose. Sorry I love you Lu but you’re bad at bowling and I don’t think you’re going to beat me at mini golf,“ I say and eat some pineapple.
“You’re so sweet when you think you’re the only one who can win. I was gonna share a secret talent with orange soda, but I don’t know since I’m not going to win maybe another time,“ she says and I know she’s teasing but now I want to know more.
“You’re such a tease,“ I point my mango piece at her and she snatches it up with her mouth.
“Hey I was going to eat that,“ I say and grab another piece.
“Looks like you lost,“ she winks and chews on the mango piece.
I eye Luna from across the table as we eat in silence.
“Is it okay that Aubrey is coming along?“ I ask hesitantly since Luna and Aubrey, one of my fellow surgeon colleagues at Kuakini Medical Center, haven’t had the greatest start.
Luna shrugs.
“I’d like to get to know her. I mean she seemed pretty nice a few months ago when we had that pinktober event at the university,“ Luna says.
“She’s an exceptional surgeon. She’s giving me a run for my money. I know she’s had some personal problems that she’s dealing with. She can be bitchy but she usually doesn’t mean it.“ I say and catch Luna's hand in mine when her hand starts tapping on the table and drawing circles on the back of her hand. She smiles softly at me. Her green dress with daisies glowing with her.
“Before you ask I’m not saying this because I have any romantic feelings. I respect her a lot as a person and as a surgeon. I just think you’ve had a rocky start that’s all,“ I say and she grins.
“I think so too. I’d love to get to know her. I think she’s great. Maybe she’ll beat you at mini golf too,“ she says and I roll my eyes making Luna laugh.
Luna
There’s nothing more relaxing than going mini golfing with friends. And even better? It’s blacklight mini golf. How amazing is that? This is going to be great I can already tell.
Everyone is here at this super cool blacklight mini golf place called Glow Putt right here in Honolulu, Hawaii.
Everyone is here. Ethan and Hayley. My triplet cousins Evie, Soraya, and Skyler.
Elijah, Jackie, Sienna, and Tobias.
Rafael and Kyra couldn’t make it. Rafael had to work and Kyra said she had a date, which I’m super curious about. Can’t wait for the details. When it comes to dates? Kyra always has great stories to tell.
Our newest friends Aubrey and Meilani are here too. They both work with Bryce at the Kuakini Medical Center.
Aubrey dressed in a jade green flowy dress.
Aubrey is a surgeon just like Bryce.
Meilani dressed in a yellow, floral print silk dress, that ends a bit above the knees and some floral crochet sandals.
Meiliani is also my OB/GYN, she’s great. She and Sor hit it off ever since they first met. I can tell they’re great together.
Aubrey? I’m not so sure about her. But maybe she’s nice. Deep down. I’ll give her the benefit of the doubt. It’s never cool to judge someone, based on one time you’ve met them. Maybe you’ve met them when they had a bad day.
I smile as I lean into Bryce and don’t feel guilty for totally inhaling the scent of his shirt. He bought a new cologne recently because his old one was too much for me. Certain smells affect me a lot more now that I’m pregnant.
I play with Bryce’s hands as we‘re standing together by one of the holes.
The dark room is illuminated by vibrant neon colors, such as lemon, lime green, hot pink, aqua blue, electric orange, and vibrant purple.
The art is amazing. Whole scenes from the jungle and the deep blue ocean world are painted onto the walls and the floor. I think this could become my new favorite place.
I look around and see everyone in their little groups hanging out talking and laughing. I smile.
My cousins Evie, Sky, and Soraya are leaning on their golf clubs, all three of them opted for jeans, though Soraya and Evie both wear colorful blouses, while Sky is wearing one of his Hawaii shirts.
Tobias stands next to them in a white shirt and dark jeans. He must be telling a joke since all three of my cousins are hollering with laughter.
When I look further to my left I see Hayley in her lavender dress leaning into Ethan who’s wearing a grey shirt and dark blue jeans.
He smiles at Hayley. It’s a rare occasion for Ethan to smile, but it’s always nice to see.
Meilani and Aubrey joined in on the fun of playing blacklight minigolf, after their shift. Just to let out some steam after a long day at work.
Jackie, Sienna, Elijah, and Aurora are joking about a patient who got naked whenever someone entered his room. Jackie in her metallic dress and sneakers, is teasing Sienna that he’s got the hots for her. I caught the name Lucas and smiled.
Adam who stands next to Maxi with his hands in his jeans pockets and a dark olive green shirt smiles at Maxi. Maxi stands next to him and is wearing one of her cut-off jeans shorts and a super lacy camisole. She’s smiling and whispering something to Adam. Looks like things are looking up for those two. I’m excited to see my girl happy.
She catches me staring at them and grins. I blow her a kiss and she laughs out loud.
Keiki couldn’t make it since she had to study for her finals for December, but said to send pics of how her brother embarrasses himself. I will deliver embarrassing pics of Bryce.
”Are we going to stand around like a bunch of weirdos or are we going to play golf? Because that’s the sole reason we came here right? To have some fun and to show that surgeons can win at mini golf,“ I hear Aubrey say and everyone looks at her.
Ethan raises his eyebrows at her words.
Tobias's voice comes from beside my cousins.
”Well since you and Bryce are the only surgeons here I don’t know how you think you’ll win,“ Tobias just grins his green eye sparkling in the dim light.
Aubrey just smiles at him. Her face is saying ”Game on.“
I grin and look between them. I clear my throat.
Everyone shifts around and it becomes an awkward silence, while everyone introduces themselves.
Well, our group of friends is getting bigger and it’s nice if we know each other.
After that, we stand around not sure what to say next. Should we play or how do we go about it? Honestly, I’m not someone who’s at a loss for words but this time around? I feel a bit nervous and anxious.
Bryce takes my hand in his to help me and I grin thankfully at him. Skin-to-skin contact helps me with my anxiety.
I gnaw on my lip and try to think of something to say when Jackie breaks the silence and asks no one in particular.
”How about girls vs boys?“ she looks around.
”I wanted to be on Ethan’s team,“ I pout a bit disappointed.
Bryce bristles.
”Wait what? I thought we were a team?“ he asks.
Everyone chuckles.
”Looks like your woman showed you up Lahela,“ Tobias comments.
”Oh please I’ve won against Luna a couple of times,“ Bryce comments.
I smirk at B, lean into him and whisper.
”We’re always a team babe. Especially in bed…“ I whisper and leave the sentence hanging in the air. He just smirks.
”I can play dirty if that’s what you want. It’s my favorite,“ he says suggestively and I laugh much to the groaning of everyone else.
”Get a room,“ Ethan and Aubrey say at the same time.
Bryce and I grin and share a smile.
”Is it just me? Or does anyone else think this is creepy?“ Elijah asks and I add.
”Me too. They’re almost the same person. Though Ethan is a bit grumpier, which makes him adorable,“ I say and Sienna nods in my direction.
”I thought I was the only one who thought so,“ she says and we fist-bump each other.
Ethan sighs deeply.
”Can we please just play? I don’t want to have front-row seats for Lahela's make-out session. I’m getting annoyed by this banter and about the fact that you’re trying to make it about me,“ he says his tone getting grumpy.
Bryce can’t resist adding.
”Oh come on man you’d learn a thing or two,“ B adds.
Ethan just sighs.
”If you’re talking about tips on how to make out? I’ll pass. Thanks though,“ Ethan replies.
Hayley leans over and gives his stubbled cheek a light kiss.
”We love you grumpy and all,“ she says and keeps going.
”Though you’re right let’s play some minigolf. So I can finally beat your ass at something Ramsey,“ she says and earns hollers and laughs from everyone.
”Careful Rookie,“ a slight glint in his deep blue eyes.
She winks at him.
”Don’t you mean Valentine-Ramsey? Also if I act out you can just punish me later,“ she says and grins.
Jackie says loud enough for everyone in our group to hear.
”This is why I don’t like to spend time with Hayley and Ethan. They always talk about their sex life. Which is creepy,“ she says.
Hayley turns around.
”We can talk about yours,“ she says saucily.
Jackie laughs.
”You couldn’t stomach mine,“ she says and winks.
We all laugh.
Soraya chimes in.
”I think Jackie’s idea of girls vs. boys wasn’t so bad. We can wipe the floor with the guys,“ she says earning a high-five from Aubrey who decided to join in on the fun.
”Real talk. Let’s get started,“ Bryce says.
I’m still bummed I don’t get to be on Ethan’s team.
He sees my face and asks.
”Why don’t we mix it up a bit,“ Ethan asks, and everyone boos at him.
Bryce looks at me and says.
”Sure if you want to lose, let Luna be on your team,“ he teases.
I gasp and squint my eyes at my fiancé. Bryce comes back to kiss me, and my lips still tingle from our kiss even after the kiss ended. I smile.
Then he goes back to stand with the guys. The others laugh.
”Scared of losing Ramsey?“ Aurora asks her eyes twinkling.
Ethan smiles and shrugs.
”Have it your way. So what’s the losing team got to do?“ he asks and nobody has an answer to that.
”I’ve got it. Two words. Skinny dipping, huh?“ Sky asks.
Evie and Soraya say at the same time.
”Gross Sky. I don’t want to be scarred for life,“ they say shuddering both.
He sighs.
”Fine. Fair enough,“ he says.
”Why doesn’t the losing team just buy a round for the winning team?“ Sienna suggests.
We all nod and agree that that’s probably the best idea.
After we started playing I stand to the side and lean on my golf club. Just to breathe for a second.
Bryce puts his hands on my belly.
”Are you sure this isn’t too much for you? You’ve been up since early this morning,“ he asks concern lacing his every word.
”Is it weird that I find it hot that you’re concerned? But seriously I’m fine. The light breeze is doing wonders for me. The heat before was a bit much, to be honest,“ I say.
He puts a hand over my forehead. When he’s satisfied he takes his hand away.
Then he checks my pulse.
”Your pulse is a little high,“ he says.
”It’s because you’re standing next to me. Your beauty blinds me,“ I say teasing him.
He leans closer and pulls me behind a tree, out of sight of the others.
I can hear someone ask but can’t make out the voice too invested in Bryce‘s touch to care who asked.
”Where are Luna and Bryce?“
Sky laughs.
”They’re making out behind that tree,“ he laughs louder when heads turn in our direction.
”Just ignore them,“ he says smiling.
Bryce grins against my lips and we lean more into the shadows. Obscured from the view of the others. I just hope this tree won’t fall.
Evie says loud enough for me to hear.
”Let’s move to the next hole. They’ll catch up,“ she says.
I can hear someone making a dirty joke about the word hole, but too far into Bryce putting my right leg over his hip and kissing his way down my throat.
”I feel bad for making out when we’re supposed to spend time with our friends and family,“ I say gnawing on my lip.
He kisses me again and every thought of guilt flies out the window. We stand like that for what seems like an eternity.
Before we both smile and just decide to go back to the game. Lacing our fingers together.
”How are the guys already in the lead? The game just started!“ I say sadly to see that the guys lead and well the girls got a bit behind.
”I don’t care I’ve already won,“ he says kissing our interlaced fingers.
I look at him.
”How so?“ I ask totally confused.
”Because I got to lock lips with my favorite person,“ he says.
”Glad we could spend some time together. Though we were making out for some time and the girls got behind,“ I say.
Bryce laughs.
”Oh you and the others can still catch up,“ he grins.
”Oh? So you think you already got this huh? Nice try Lahela,“ I say and we join the others.
The make-out session was great, but I do want to play mini golf. That’s what we came here to do.
I’m standing together with Meilani, while Bryce is lining up his shot.
She whispers.
”Damn. I’m into women. But holy damn. Bryce? You’re a lucky woman,“ she says pointing with the putt in Bryce’s direction while watching Soraya laugh about a joke Sienna made.
I sigh while I watch him. His muscles move as he pulls up his shirt to dab away at some sweat on his brow.
I grin looking at his abs, which you can see from here. Feeling a little guilty, since I don’t love him just for his body. His mind is just as beautiful. But I can’t help checking him out. Who would fault me for that? He’s hot. I grin.
”It’s cruel that he looks this good. Though I guess you’re swooning over Sor,“ I grin and earn a chuckle from Meilani.
I get serious and dart a glance toward Meilani.
”By the way can I ask you something?“ I say not able to look her in the eye.
Meilani turns my way. Directing her whole attention to me. Giving me a sense of tranquility with her easygoing smile and the calmness I always feel when I’m around her. She’s the quiet to my inner storm.
She has a very excitable and bubbly personality similar to my own, but when it comes down to it. She’s very zen-like.
”Of course. What’s up,“ she asks. Playing with her bracelet. I look closely and see she’s wearing a yellow, floral print silk dress, that ends a bit above the knees and some floral crochet sandals. I like it it’s very Meilani.
I bite my lip, feeling super uncomfortable asking this.
”Do you think it’s normal, to be this turned on all the time?“ I ask her.
I’m probably looking as red as a fire hydrant. Sometimes I still get embarrassed when I ask certain questions.
She smiles and puts her hand on my arms.
”Your hormones are all over the place. It’s completely normal to want to have sex,“ she says and continues.
”You’re 7 months pregnant. But if you’re worried about hurting the babies, you don’t need to worry. They don’t mind it actually, studies have shown that babies get more relaxed and calm,“ she says and I gape at her.
”What? No way,“ I say sounding disbelieving.
She pats my shoulder.
”Trust me. The babies don’t mind. Just be careful not to be too rough. No experimental positions. I can give you a list of safe positions,“ she asks.
I blush furiously.
”Isn’t this convo weird?“ I ask.
She hugs me from the side.
”Not at all. I’m your doctor and your friend so it’s all good. We are friends right?“ she asks hesitantly.
I kiss her on her cheek.
”Of course you are. I’m glad we met,“ I say.
”Me too. I’ll send you that list,“ she says and walks off toward Soraya.
I nod and walk over to Bryce. I hug him and he pulls me close.
”There you are sunshine,“ he says giving me a soft kiss on my temple.
I tear up at the word sunshine.
He smiles and tucks me into him and I mumble something incoherent that probably sounded something like
”Love boo“.
”Love you too,“ he says kissing me once more before we walk towards the others.
I smile at Bryce and say to him.
”Want to know a secret?“ I ask him and he leans closer to me.
”You give the best hugs,“ I say and add ”With and without clothes,“ I say and he laughs out loud throwing his head back.
The others turn to us but when they see Bryce laughing so hard they start grinning too.
”Want to share with the class Lahela?“ Tobias asks and the others snicker.
He shakes his head at Tobias. And grins at me.
”Nope. This is not for your guy's ears,“ he says and gives me another kiss pulling me towards him and taking my cheeks into his warm, calloused hands.
They‘re all laughing and teasing each other. Having a great time.
”Oh, man. That doesn’t count. You cheated Sor. You guys saw that right? I can’t be the only one,“ Sky says.
I look over at the hole where Soraya's golf ball went into.
”Looks like the ball went through,“ I say and earn a grin from Soraya.
Sienna joins in.
”Yeah. Totally. Maybe you can learn a thing or two from us. So you wouldn’t miss all the time,“ she says and grins.
Sky throws up his hands.
”Everyone is ganging up on me,“ Sky complains.
Soraya laughs.
”Because you’re an easy target that we all love,“ she says grinning at him.
Ethan is the next who is lining up his shot.
“You better not miss Ramsey,“ Tobias says and gets a nod from Elijah and Sky.
Ethan just shakes his head.
“You guys are worse than interns,“ he says and the ball goes inside the hole.
Sky and Tobias run to him to hug him and Ethan is sandwiched between them. You can tell he feels uncomfortable.
Hayley just takes a pic.
She sees me and winks. Oh, this will definitely be sent to our group chat.
“See the guys are in the lead again,“ Sky says and grins at Ethan like they won some championship. I chuckle. I love my cousin.
“Okay okay enough with the hugs,“ Ethan sighs and when I see his mouth quirk up at the corners I can tell he wants to rile Sky up a bit. I grin and shake my head at Ethan.
“The girls can still win you know?“ Ethan points out and lets Hayley take the next one.
“Oh come on why ruin your win from a couple of seconds ago?“ Sky asks and glares at Ethan.
“I’m just stating a fact,“ Ethan replies grinning.
Hayley scores too and I can hear the guys groan.
Hayley gets a high-five from Sienna.
Ethan is right, we can still win this.
An hour later…
Luna
The boys lost to the girls.
I’m sitting down at the table of a restaurant we chose. I love the Christmas decorations they’ve put up. It’s very Hawaiian and tropical. Christmas songs are playing through the speakers.
So we picked a restaurant to celebrate at. One that isn’t too far away.
I love this place. Whenever we want to relax we come here. They have great food and them staff here is so nice and welcoming.
We choose a table that can actually seat all of us. Bryce and Sky went to take the first drinks with help from the other guys.
I’m sitting down and looking at the menu to decide what to order. I can feel like someone is standing next to my seat and when I look up I find a pair of brown eyes looking at me with uncertainty in their depths.
It’s Aubrey. We didn’t exactly get on from the start, but maybe we can talk and see if we’ve both just had a bad day.
“Is this seat taken?“ she asks hesitating to sit next to me.
I shake my head and make room for her.
“Just so you know? If I have to pee? Girl you’ll have to get up,“ I say and she grins.
“Deal,“ she says and an awkward silence settles around us.
I gnaw on my lip trying to think of something to say and to sort of break the ice, but Aubrey speaks first.
“I’m sorry I’ve been a bitch a couple of months ago when we met at the hospital. I’ve had a bad day, which is no excuse, but I wasn’t nice and I know you’re an awesome woman. At least what Bryce has said about you. He talks about you all the time by the way,“ she smiles and it transforms her seemingly cold demeanor to warm and friendly.
Like coming home from the cold and nestling in front of the fireplace to get warm.
”You’re right you were a bit bitchy. But I wasn’t nice either. It was that day I found out I was pregnant,“ I say nibbling on my upper lip.
Aubrey raises her eyebrows in surprise.
”Really? And here I go making a bad impression. To be honest I wanted you to like me. I’ve heard so many good things about you. From Bryce and Meilani,“ she smiles.
I grin at her. Feeling that this is the start of a new friendship.
I see Bryce and the other guys walk back to the table to put the drink orders down. And some of the food that’s ready. The other food orders aren’t done yet.
He keeps darting glances at me and Aubrey.
”Is it safe? Did you guys make up? Because I‘d hate it if it got awkward for all of us. No offense babe,“ he says and kisses me on the top of my head.
Someone throws a fry at me. When I look up I see that it’s by Aubrey.
”That was frying cute,“ I can’t resist adding while Bryce sits next to me and laughs silently.
Aubrey just rolls her eyes at me.
I grin even wider. Making her laugh will be a fun, new mission to have.
”God. You’re as bad with puns as Lahela is.“
Bryce looks up from the menu and frowns.
”Hey!“ he exclaims.
I lean into him and direct my attention toward Aubrey.
I point said throwing fry at Aubrey and take a bite.
”Don’t be such a fry-baby,“ I say not running out of fry puns.
The crispness and the saltiness of the fry give me almost an orgasm. But I tone it down since I’m in public.
Bryce snickers from the side. I wink at him.
Aubrey looks at us. Narrowing her eyes at me.
”You’re doing this on purpose aren’t you? I knew I should’ve ordered something stronger tonight. I’ll be right back,“ she says and is gone to get herself something stronger.
I lean into Bryce and when the rest of the food gets to the table I sigh with happiness. Food makes everything better.
Luna
Later that night I’m lying in bed next to Bryce. The door to our balcony is open to let in the moonlight shining into our bedroom.
I get up and check if Bryce woke up but he doesn’t even stir. Poor baby must be exhausted.
I smile and sit outside in one of the dark grey wicker armchairs and just look out at the ocean.
I lean back in the chair and hug my knees tight to my body. That’s when I feel a sudden kick. I look down and put my hand on my belly to see if it’ll happen again and when it does I get so excited. Oh my gosh. I feel tears running down my face. Who would’ve thought I’d have this life someday?
To be in a great relationship, be engaged, soon I’ll be married and two little ones running around the house.
I walk back into our bedroom and lie down next to B. I gently try and wake him up and when he does, he sees me smiling and raises an eyebrow.
”What?“ he asks half-asleep already.
I take his hand in mine and guide it to my stomach. Hoping the twins might kick again.
When they do he opens his eyes and I can tell he’s fully awake.
”Did that just happen?“ he asks his voice full of wonder.
I just nod and moves further down to put both of his hands on my stomach. He waits for a few heartbeats but when the kick doesn’t happen again he sighs, though he still smiles softly.
”I wanted to feel it again,“ he says sounding sad.
”They’re not circus performers. Though that would be so cool,” I say.
He grins at me.
“I love all these new memories we’re making together.”
Bryce kisses me softly and I lean into him.
We both smile at each other sharing this beautiful moment. Just us and no one else.

If you’d like to listen to the songs that inspired for this chapter here’s a list
Strange encounters
We flew in from the Black Forest in Germany and landed in New Orleans after a ten-hour flight. We had to make a stop in London, then continued to New Orleans.
Which my dearest brother complained all the way.
”Do you think we’re close?“ Hänsel asked.
I roll my eyes at my brother.
”You can be in a stake-out for hours? But can’t be on a ten-hour flight?“ I ask him while I try to eat some of the food on the plane.
He just shrugs and puts his headphones on.
We’re currently at The Graveyard Shift right in the heart of the French Quarter. Owned by none other than Garrus. A Fae who’s no longer living among his kind.
Garrus was the heir of a Fae viscount before the Fae cast him out. He remains exiled until this day. He was banished for running cons and swindling magic off the upper crust
Garrus is an incredible guy. He greeted us at the door with hugs and even gave Hänsel a kiss.
Hänsel was weirded out, to say the least, but he got over it.
The bar is dimly lit. We’re both sitting on wooden chairs at a table in the far back enjoying our drinks.
I lean back in my chair while flipping through a magazine I bought at the airport. As we’re waiting for Nik and Katherine to arrive. Nighthunters.
Nighthunters are as the name is already giving away hunters. They hunt all supernaturals. Just like Hänsel and I. Though we don’t call ourselves Nighthunters. We’re simply known as Hänsel & Gretel.
“I missed New Orleans,“ I say while I devour a beignet. Sighing in pure contentment. Oh my god. I could eat beignets every single day. Sugary goodness.
Hänsel scoffs and squats away at a mosquito.
“Yeah. The mosquitos. The heat. Real great,“ he says.
I take an apple I bought from a vendor earlier and hand it to Hänsel.
“Don’t be a downer. Here have an apple,“ I say.
He looks at the apple suspiciously.
”It’s not the snow white effect. Just take the apple,“ I say and offer it to him.
“Thank you loveliest sister of mine,“ he says through a bite.
I sigh.
“Shut up and eat,“ I flip to another page without looking up.
“Geez. You compliment a woman and she almost beats you over the head with it. Women are mysterious,“ he’s finished the apple. All that’s left is the core.
I give him a stare and smile softly.
“That’s because you haven’t figured us out yet dearest brother of mine,“ I wink and he rolls his eyes at me.
“Whatever,“ he replies and I chuckle in response.
I’m going through the magazine. An article about a DIY foaming face mask catches my attention while I’m listening with one ear to Hänsel’s ramblings.
I notice Hänsel stopped talking and walked over to the bar to talk to a woman who was sipping on her mimosa and I roll my eyes at him.
The chair that’s been occupied by Hänsel mere seconds ago is now seating a different person.
Nik Ryder himself. His blond hair was held back by gel and his blue eyes sparkling like the deep blue sea stare back at me.
He smirks and I put the magazine down on the wooden table.
“Funny meeting you here,“ he says and leans back in his chair, his legs stretched out and his leather jacket billowing behind him as if a soft breeze swirled it back.
I laugh.
“In New Orleans? What are the off chances of that? Hmm,“ I keep smiling.
He laughs.
“Bitch,“ he says.
“Jerk,“ I reply in turn and we both share a laugh.
He clasps my hand as a way of greeting me.
“It’s good to see you again,“ he smiles warmly.
“Likewise. I wish it was under different circumstances though,“ I say.
Meaning the missing person case that’s brought both me and Hänsel to New Orleans.
His smile dims.
“You and me both. As to the case, I don’t have much to tell you. Actually, make that nothing at all. I did grill the police but they don’t have anything. Or they don’t want to tell me. Which is worrisome,“ he says.
“I was afraid you’d say that,“ my shoulders sag. I was hoping he could dig up something.
“I’m sorry I couldn’t deliver better news,“ Nik smiles sadly at me.
He said just that when he was joined by a beautiful-looking woman.
Dressed from head to toe in black leather. Her dark wavy hair adorned her soft face. Her slightly darker skin tone is flawless. Her amber brown eyes glow as if from deep within.
She smiles at us and takes a sip of my drink.
“Good seeing you in one piece Gret,“ she says and her whiskey brown eyes sparkle.
I grin.
“You too Katie,“ I say because I can’t resist riling her up a bit.
She sighs and looks at Nik.
“See what you did? Now everyone calls me Katie. No one’s going to take me seriously with that name,“ she takes another sip.
I smile at her and say.
“We love you that’s why we call you Katie,“ I say.
She groans.
“Small children are called Katie. I’m a grown-ass woman,“ she says matter-of-factly.
Hänsel leans over her shoulder.
“A good-looking one at that,“ he says and she swats him away like a fly.
“And you just got more annoying,“ she says chuckling.
Hänsel gasps in shock.
“Pie-boy is getting roasted. I knew something was missing,“ Nik says grinning.
Hänsel cracks his knuckles.
“Bite me blondie,“ Hänsel says.
Niks grin widens and he just smiles at my brother.
“I’m afraid you’re not my type,“ he winks.
Katie looks between the guys and says.
“If you could stop your little pissing match. Maybe we could turn to more important matters?“ she says and pulls out a dark purple leather-bound notebook.
She’s jotting something down and I furrow my brow at her.
Nik notices my gaze and explains.
“Her way of keeping track of things,“ he says and I nod.
Katie looks up.
“This way I have everything I need. I don’t think I’m of much help regarding your case, but I can keep my ears to the ground. If I hear anything I’ll let you know,“ she says and closes her notebook, and puts it back in her bag. One I haven’t noticed before.
I sigh deeply.
“Why has the police not opened up an investigation? I mean it’s not just one person. We’re talking about at least a dozen people here. Don’t they think that’s suspicious?“ I ask around the table.
Both Nik and Katie share a long look. Silently communicating.
“What was that look?“ I point with my index finger between them.
Nik rubs his neck as if he’s embarrassed for some reason. A tinge of pink showed in his high-cheek bones.
“The police have a tight budget. When they learned about the disappearances they saw it was mostly homeless people. They didn’t think it was worth investigating. Spending money they don’t have on a case that’s probably going to lead nowhere? Yeah, not happening,“ he says with a frustrated gaze.
I’m about to get up when I feel Katherine’s hand on my own.
“I know how you feel. Trust me. We don’t like it any more than you do. However, just because the police can’t help, doesn’t mean we can’t. We can combine our strengths to solve this case,“ she says.
That’s when I remember Vera Reimonenq. Our mutual friend who has the Reimonenq touch. By touching someone with her bare hands, the basic outcome is death. She hasn’t learned to control her powers as her mother has. That’s also the reason why she wears gloves. At all times. You will never catch her without them.
Though Vera might have some ideas. She knows New Orleans better than anyone. Her family dates back generations. Vera’s great-great-grandfather, Derek Reimonenq murdered a coven of witches and their families, the witches in turn cursed the Reimonenqs. The curse prevents anyone in Vera’s family to touch anyone with their bare hands. Otherwise, the person they touch will die.
Vera’s mother who is also known as Lady Smoke is running the underworld. She’s got to know something.
That’s why I ask Nik and Katie.
“What about Vera?“
Nik already shakes his head.
“Vera and her mother are on some sort of trip. Looking for an artifact. No idea what though. They didn’t exactly provide us with any details,“ he says and shrugs.
I humm.
Katie looks intently at the door and whispers.
“There might be someone we could ask,“ she says.
“Who?“ I ask curiously.
Katie bites down on her lower lip.
“He’s known as The Shadow,“ she whispers.
Nik is shaking his head wildly at Katie.
“Are you crazy? He’s dangerous. It’s better to not get him involved,“ his lips pressed into a firm line.
Katie raises an eyebrow.
“What are our options?“ she asks and when Nik doesn’t reply she continues “Just because you butted heads a few times doesn’t mean he won’t be able to help us out,“ she says finishing off my drink.
“It’s still a no,“ Nik says.
Hänsel and I look between them.
“Sorry to interrupt your little love fest squabble but who are we talking about?“ I ask.
Katie turns to me with a serious look in her chestnut brown eyes.
“As I said. He’s called The Shadow…“ she doesn’t get to finish her sentence when someone loudly clears their throat.
We all look up and see Garrus. Who is pointing towards the back room of the bar with his head, indicating we should go to the back of the bar.
We all stand up and silently follow Garrus to the back of the bar.
When we’re safely inside Garrus loses the door and takes a look at each of us.
“You should be careful when you talk about him. He’s the most cunning supernatural I’ve ever met,“ he says.
Katie holds up her hands and stares at Garrus.
“Wait a minute. You guys met? When? And how come you didn’t say anything?“
Garrus sighs from deep within.
“Well, I swore an oath to not talk about it. This is as far as I can go,“ he admits. Fae love a good deal. Always making up their own little loopholes, that’s why you’ve got to be very careful when you make a deal with the Fae.
I hold up a hand.
“Well, Hänsel and I still don’t know who that is,“ I say more confused than ever.
Garrus’s ice-blue gaze holds my own hazel one.
“That’s because there’s not much to be known about him. He’s called The Shadow and he’s hard to find. But trust me when I say if he wants to find you? He will,“ he says.
Why does that excite me for some reason? Get your head out of the gutter Gretel. We’re here to solve a case and not get wild in the sheets with some Fae guy.
“Then let’s go find him. Hänsel you coming?“ I ask my brother.
Hänsel looks over at me and slowly retreats back to the door.
“Yeah. No. I know that look. I’m not helping you streak through the dark looking for trouble. That sounds like way too much work for my taste. And I’d rather spend some time with those nymph twins I saw earlier. I think I’m going to choose option number two and have some fun,“ he says.
“Seriously Hänsel? Can you for once in your life focus and think with your head and not with your dick?“
Everyone’s laughs turn into coughs when Hänsel gives them a look.
“You haven’t changed a bit pie-boy,“ Nik shakes with laughter.
Hänsel just looks at him.
“A) That’s really rude. B) That’s not true and C) Stop calling me pie boy,“ he says.
While Hänsel mutters to himself and walks out of the bar.
I sigh.
“I’m sorry about my brother. He’s usually not like that,“ I say to everyone else.
Nik turns serious.
“About The Shadow. He’s dangerous…“
I snort.
“As opposed to what? All the other supernaturals that are roaming the night?“
“He’s Fae. That of itself is dangerous,“ he quickly looks at Garrus.
“No offense man,“ he seems apologetic.
“It’s all good,“ Garrus replies.
“Does anyone else want to tag along?“ I ask around.
Katie and Nik both look at me and I know they won’t be able to help. I sigh.
“I wish I could but Nikki and I have a little project we’re working on. So we’ll be out of town for a few days,“ she says and Nik nods in agreement, but turns back and gives me a key.
“It’s the key to my place. You and Hänsel can crash there if you want,“ with those words he’s gone before I can even mutter a thank you. I smile to myself.
Now it’s just me and Garrus.
When the silence stretches on for too long I can see him giving me a long look before he wriggles his finger and tells me to follow him inside the bar.
I sit down on one of the bar stools and he begins wiping down the counter.
“Alright my little butterfly. What do you want to know?“ he asks and puts some dirty dishes into the sink.
“What do you know about that Fae?“ I ask leaning my elbows on the counter of the bar. I’m not sugarcoating things. Getting straight to business.
He dries a plate with a dish towel that was draped over his shoulder.
I lean closer to him to catch everything he has to say.
“I know his name is Grey. He and his little group of misfits collect from the highest bidder.“
I lean back and think about that for a few seconds.
“Doing what? Collecting artifacts? Sounds like the job of a bounty hunter to me,“ I look at him closely, but his face doesn’t reveal anything.
Garrus smiles at me.
“They collect anything and anyone. Making deals left and right. Anyone who’ll hire them, they’ll accept. The last thing I heard was they collected a rare gem. Made by Fae hands. I don’t know all the details. All I know is it’s pretty rare and priceless. Be careful when you go looking for him. You shouldn’t underestimate him,“ there’s a warning laced in his tone.
“I’ve dealt with worse,“ I say.
Garrus looks left and right. As if scared he would be overheard.
“That might be true rose petal. But you have never met a guy like him,“ he says done with cleaning and drying dishes.
I furrow my brow.
“Why is everyone so scared of him?“ I ask in wonderment.
“Because he moves like a shadow. You never see him coming. Others said that his beauty is out of this world. Making you do anything for him,“ he says pointedly.
“That sounds more like someone’s got a crush on him and hasn’t gotten laid in a while,“ I say.
He breaks out into laughter. After he recovered he hands me a shot glass. Shimmering with a blue opal-like liquid. It almost looks as if the liquid is swirling inside the shot glass.
“A little something on the house…“ he says.
I knock it back and smile at him while I leave the bar.
I’m almost out the door when his voice stops me.
“One other thing. Be careful little tulip,“ are his departing words.
I nod and then I’m out in the middle of the busy street. Right in the middle of the French Quarter.
The sun is slowly sinking and making way for the night. I’ve never liked the night. Daylight is my preferred time of day thank you very much.
The longer I walk the later it gets.
I’m walking through the French Quarter. Past busy bars that are open and bursting with partygoers.
All I encounter are drunken people and others looking for a hookup.
The deeper I move into the quieter parts of the city the less noise I hear. It’s as if all the noise from before got sucked out. The pale moonlight illuminated my way ahead. The soft taps of hooves moving past me on the cobblestones make me look to my right.
A white, open carriage is passing me by. An elderly couple is sitting and chatting animatedly inside.
The man manning the carriage taps his top hat slightly and smiles warmly at me as he moves past me. I smile and wave back at him.
A sudden gust of wind is blowing, making me shiver in my green leather coat. I walk by a dark alley, feeling as if my eyes are watching my every move.
Before I can even get my dagger out an arm jots out and grips me only to pin me against the brick wall in a nearby alley. The air leaves my body from the hard throw at the wall.
I look up and see a tall, hooded figure standing in front of me. Almost being one with the shadows.
“Why do you keep asking questions about me?“ he asks in a deep voice.
When I don’t answer he leans in closer.
”Stop following me!“ He says.
I try to break free of his grip. But it’s as if I was being held by steel. I can’t move an inch.
“I’m not following you. I’m looking for someone. You happened to be here,“ I retort.
He loses his grip and I can breathe a little easier again.
“Maybe the person you’re looking for doesn’t want to be found. Ever thought of that?“ he asks.
I’m trying to catch a glimpse of his face but he moves so fast through the shadows making it impossible to see anything.
“How do you know who I’m looking for? News flash you can’t order me around. So get out of my way,“ I say through gritted teeth.
He chuckles darkly. A chuckle that sends goosebumps all across my body.
“So we’re doing this the hard way. I really thought we could’ve avoided that,“ he says almost ruefully.
I try and slightly pull away his hood and see his pointy ears. His hair is as pale as moonlight.
He hisses under his breath and the next thing I know a purple haze is covering my eyes.
Then my whole world turns black and I’m out like a light.
bryce’s reaction to luna getting up in the middle of the night to get water or something & then coming back & giving him a lil smooch on his forehead thinking he’s asleep? what about if it was the other way around? im in a fluffy sappy mood lol 💖

All characters belong to PB. I only own my OC‘s.
Today we’re finding out the gender of our twins. My palms are sweaty and I’m feeling anxious and excited at the same time.
”Nervous?“ I ask Lunes trying to mask my own anxiety, while she’s lying on the examination bed. Fidgeting around.
We’re waiting for Dr. Leahi. Or Meilani as we call her. She’s Lunas OB/GYN. And one of my colleagues here at the Kuakini Medical Center in Honolulu, Hawaii.
Luna fumbles with her anxiety ring and I can tell this is stressing her out immensely.
Let’s see if I can make her laugh.
”I’m so happy because it’s going to be girls,“ I say and she turns her head towards me. Her whole face a question mark and I grin.
”You don’t know that. Have you been using my purple crystal ball to foresee the future? Because I remember you said you don’t believe in that stuff,“ she makes air quotes when she says stuff.
I try to hide a grin. Though all I want to do is laugh at her mentioning her crsytall ball. She’s so cute when she’s all serious.
”I’m good. I just know it’ll be girls,“ I tease her further.
”I bet it won’t,“ she says being stubborn just to annoy me, but it won’t work.
I grin mischievously
”Care to make a bet?“ I ask her and she squints at me.
”Sure,“ she says and sounds very sure of herself.
”So let me get this right! I’m betting it’s two girls and you’re saying two boys?“ I clarify
”That’s right. Though you‘re way too cocky,“ she says pouting.
I give her a light kiss on her forehead
”It’s called confidence,“ I say and I know I don’t feel confident at all. Maybe 68% which is very low.
”So what’s the loser got to do? Please not walking butt naked through our yard again. I think we scared poor Mrs. Jolinsky last time. I know that for a fact because she told my mom,“ Luna shudders
”What did your mom say?“ I ask curious to know what Lunas mom said.
”After she stopped laughing? Yeah she was like good job honey. And then she told me about the time she went skinny dipping with dad, that was horrible to listen to,“ Luna shudders and I’m laughing so hard I have to grip part of the bed to not fall down. Tears are streaming down my face and I wipe them away.
”Okay so no skinny dipping or running around naked in our yard,“ I say after I recovered from all the laughing.
”How about we each try out a dessert? Winner decides on which body part,“ I say and Luna gets a devilish glint in her eyes.
”Can we use a blindfold? It’ll make it more fun,“ she suggests smiling and I grin nodding along.
”Sure sounds good to me,“ I say and we both grin.
That’s when we hear a knock and Meilani walks in after we said ”come in“.
”Hey guys. Gosh I’m happy you’re here. Are you ready to know what gender you’re going to have?“ She smiles at us and Luna pulls her dress up so Meilani can drop some gel onto her stomach to move the handheld device around to see if everything is okay.
Luna flinches a little at the coldness of the gel.
”Sorry it’s a bit cold,“ Meilani squeezes Lunas hand and puts on her glasses to see the movements on the monitor better.
”Is something wrong?“ Luna asks her voice gone up a bit. I gently rub her shoulder.
”Don’t worry. The twins are healthy. I’m trying to zoom in, so I can tell you the gender,“ she grins and looks at us not able to hide her grin.
”So?“ I ask barely able to hold the joy in.
”It’s…going to be two girls,“ she says and grins giving Luna a kiss and some Kleenex to wipe the white jelly away. Meilani is grinning so much she looks like pure sunshine.
”I knew it. It’s two girls,“ I say and let out a joyous laugh.
Luna smiles at my outburst of joy. All that’s missing is pink confetti an acapella band, maybe some unicorns to celebrate. It would’ve been perfect.
Meilani gets up and gives us both a hug.
Meilani and I dance around while Luna just sits there with a what the fuck look on her face. But then she grins and I move towards her and get her off the examination table to join in our little dance session.
It looks like we’ve done some drugs and are now dancing and everything is super funny.
I smoked pot before, so this is very similar.
Someone accidentally opens the door sees us doing the Gangnam style dance and closes the door softly. Mumbling they’ve got the wrong door.
We all laugh so hard at the guys facial expression.
Later we’re at home and we’re standing in our kitchen.
The moonlit sky is giving way to all the brilliant stars in the sky.
”If you’re feelin‘ down. I want to make you happier baby. We‘ve been doin‘ all this late night talking.’ Bout anything you wanted ’til the ’mornin. Now you’re in my life and I can’t get you out of my life,“ Luna sings along to some song.
”Newest favorite song?“ I ask and grab some glasses to put on the table too.
”Yeah it’s from Harry Styles. It’s called Late night talking,“ she replies and gives me a kiss on my cheek as I turn around.
”I haven’t heard his song but I’ve gotta say your version is pretty good babe,“ I say only telling the truth. She’s got a great voice.
I’m putting down plates and cutlery, while she just chuckles and continues to belt out the rest of the song.
I grin and just watch her prepare everything and sing to a song. If that makes her happy I’m glad she enjoys it.
Lunes and I made ourselves busy in the kitchen, preparing to put the dinner we ordered on the table while we’re waiting for our guests to arrive.
Luna and I are having dinner with her parents, her cousins and her aunt Joanna or Joe as we all call her. She’s one hell of a woman. I respect her a lot. She’s got this aura of soft confidence that she radiates, it makes you trust her immediately.
Lunes is still singing when I gently grab her and spin her around.
”B. Come on you know I’m a terrible dancer,“ she laughs leaning against my shoulder, well chest, since she’s barefoot and she’s only 5‘0 feet tall.
”Good thing is you can still take dancing lessons before our wedding,“ I tease.
”I can always just hula dance,“ she replies.
”I’d love to see you hula dance. In one of those skirts and a flower crown. Would be nice,“ I say and she rolls her eyes but grins.
I get serious for a second and she notices the change in my body language and looks up.
Her blue-green eyes that remind me of the crystal clear sea, stare up at me a frown on her face.
I give her a kiss relishing the feeling of her soft lips, tasting like strawberry.
When we break apart I take her face into my hands and whisper against her lips.
”My favorite part of the day is seeing your face,“ I say and she smiles against my lips and then leans back to give me a happy smile.
”Admit it, you like to see other parts too,“ she adds wiggling her eyebrows at me.
”I mean coming home to my very hot fiancé? Hell yeah,“ I say and she bursts out laughing.
I join into her laughter as I spin her around again, and pull her close and we’re having a great time. Dancing together in our kitchen. I can smell the coconut shampoo she uses - though she always steals mine - it does smell fantastic. That’s why I have great hair.
Her soft skin underneath my fingertips. In my favorite green T-Shirt. Which is way too long for her, but she loves wearing it. She says it’s comfy.
Her small baby bump which is now visible more and more every single day sort of bumps against me while we’re dancing and it makes us laugh.
”Are you happy it’s two girls?“ I ask her and she looks up to me, while standing on her tip toes.
”I would’ve been happy with any gender,“ she smiles her soft smile, when something is too much she just smiles and gives me a hug or wants to be close to me. Which I love, it always leads to a make-out session. I grin at that.
We stop dancing just as we hear the doorbell ring.
I try to sprint to the door, but Luna beats me to it.
”I almost had it,“ I say.
”Looks like you were beaten by a pregnant woman. Say what?“ she laughs and I just shake my head at her and smile.
I grin when Lunas parents arrive, followed by her aunt Joanna or aunt Joe as we call her and her triplet cousins Evie, Soraya and Sky.
I’m glad we planned ahead and ordered in. We were both too tired to cook anything. So we ordered some Italian food. From pizza to pasta there’s something for everyone. Even some tiramisu and panna cotta with strawberry sauce.
Next to that we’ve got some wine and some lemonade for Lunes. And of course her fruit bowls. It’s become a joke between us. She loves them, ever since her morning sickness abated. So people have given her earrings with watermelon slices, T-Shirts with fruit puns - love those - and so many other things. Luna just laughs it off.
Luna walks back in. We both greet our guests with hugs and kisses, and then we all get seated at the dinner table.
It’s nice to sit down and enjoy a meal with people you love. I’m glad I found Lunes. She and her family are both so giving it’s hard not to fall in love with them. My family was a lot different.
Growing up was good and we’ve had a lot of fun. Though ever since it came out how my parents screwed over so many people financially? Things have been different.
But I try to enjoy the moment, with the people I love and that became my family. Soon we’re going to be tied closer together than ever. Since our wedding is coming closer.
We decided to postpone it a bit, because there was some trouble with the catering company we hired. So we have to wait until another one is available. Because apparently they’re in high demand. Who knew, huh?
I tune back into the conversation just as Sky is saying something.
”Man I’m hungry. Luna always makes some great food,“ Sky says while sitting down.
I chuckle and hold out my fist and he bumps it. Earning us an eye roll from Evie and Soraya.
”Hate to break it to you, but we actually didn’t cook anything. We ordered in,“ she admits sitting down next to me.
I groan
”I thought we wouldn’t tell them that?“ I whisper.
”Don’t worry. We don’t expect to be waited hand and foot on,“ aunt Joe says while taking some slices of veggie pizza and puts it on her plate.
”I would like that. King Sky has a nice ring to it“ Sky grins and I bet he’s imagining himself on a throne with a crown, people catering to his every whim. I snort.
Soraya groans
”God you’re such a guy. So typical for you. I think Sky the dramatic fits way better,“ Soraya adds and Evie nods.
Aunt Joe just sighs and doesn’t even say anything while the triplets get into a debate about which nickname would be the best.
I laugh and twirl some pasta onto my fork.
”Is this how’s it going to be when you have twins?“ Luna asks hesitantly.
Which makes Evie, Soraya and Sky stop talking and eat in silence.
Aunt Joe smiles down at her and takes her hand in hers.
”It’s definitely a wild ride. Right Grace?“ she turns her head to Luna’s mom Grace.
Grace smiles wickedly.
”Oh definitely,“ she agrees.
”I think it’s great you’re going on this journey together. Have you decided on names yet? According to this one book I read it’s okay if you have a list. It made me think of you looney since you like to keep lists,“ Evie winks.
A warm feeling enters my body. It’s just so touching to see Evie care so much. I feel moisture gather in the corner of my eyes. Blinking it away.
Everyone to go above and beyond to be helpful. Whether it’s reading a book and giving out tips. Or saying this maternity dress would look amazing. It’s so heartwarming.
It stings and makes my heart ache, because I’d like to share these moments with my parents too.
Luna squeezes my knee under the table, as if she knew this would make me feel as if a part of me is missing. I cover my hand with hers. Grateful for her presence in my life.
”Actually we have some really great news before we discuss names. We found out this morning what we’re having two girls,“ Luna looks over at me and I nod.
Her mom is crying and she gets up to give us both a hug.
”I’m so happy I could poop rainbows,“ she says though tears kissing Lunas cheeks.
”Thanks for the visual aunt Grace,“ Sky says while everyone scolds him to be quiet. He shrugs but grins. He’s happy I can tell from his expression. His eyes are radiating happiness, and it makes this moment even more special for us.
Lunas mom gives me a hug next and looks at me the way my mom always tended to look at me. Her eyes full of unconditional love. In that very moment I miss my mom.
That’s when I feel that tug at my heartstrings again.
She gives me another hug and whispers in my ear.
”Look at you baby. I’m so glad you’re part of our family. I hope you know how much we all love you,“ she cups my cheeks lovingly.
I just nod.
Lunas dad Brian, aunt Joe, Sky, Evie and Soraya each of them congratulate us. I‘m glad we didn’t do one of those gender reveal parties. This is way better. To reveal it within the family.
”Actually I do have a book with names for boys and girls,“ she admits shyly.
I turn to Luna and I’m glad Luna has a book. Because I do too.
Whenever I’m at work and I’m on break I add some names I think would be cool.
There’s one that’s recently made it into the book that I really love.
”I actually have a book too,“ I admit and Luna beams at me.
”What were you thinking?“ She asks.
”Ladies first,“ I say and she grins.
”Alright. I really liked Kehlani. It means sea and sky. It’s so meaningful because we both love the sea and the stars in the sky. I liked it when I first heard it,“ Luna says and keeps playing with her ring. The one she bought for her anxiety.
It helps her. I squeeze her hand in encouragement.
”I love it. It sounds perfect. What about a middle name?“ I ask her and interestingly enough Lunas dad Brian answers.
”There’s this really beautiful shrub rose called Indiana Mae. How about Mae? It would pair well,“ he suggests and takes a sip of wine.
Luna nods
”Yes that’s perfect,“ she gets up and takes her purple, glitter notebook to write it down. I smile as I take a sip of wine.
”What was the name you liked Bryce?“ Aunt Joe asks me.
I feel weird to have everyone’s attention on me.
I breathe out
”Okay so recently I’ve done some research about surfboards and their history. There was one name that kinda stuck. Alaia. It’s a thin, round-nosed, square-tailed surfboard ridden in pre-20th century in Hawaii.
I fell in love with that name. It actually means joyful and happy,“ I say blushing under my skin.
Luna gives me a hug and brushes some strands of hair out of my face. Her eyes radiating pure love and joy.
”That is so beautiful. And it fits perfectly. What would a good middle name be?“ Luna sits there and keeps thinking.
”How about Rose? My husband and I chose that middle name for Evie. I think it has a nice ring to it. But it’s your choice,“ aunt Joe says and takes some dessert.
I think it over and Lunes and I look at each other and silently communicate with each other.
”Do you also sometimes feel as if you’re not part of their silent communication?“ Sky throws in while he takes some panna cotta.
”It’s called love language,“ I grin at him and he just laughs.
”Man you’re so whipped. Looks good on you brother,“ he says and we clink our glasses smiling at each other.
Luna looks between us smiles.
”You guys are too cute. Guess now we have to wait until I have to give birth,“ she says and leans her head on my shoulder.
Sky chimes in.
”Wait til you have to watch that awful video in birthing class. I heard horror stories about women giving birth,“ he says finishing his panna cotta.
He notices the silence and looks up. Evie hits him over the head.
”Way to go Sky. Luna is terrified of hospitals. Thanks for making it worse for her,“ Soraya says her eyes glinting protectively for Luna.
I just slowly sip from my wine.
There could be a time when I don’t ”make it“ to birthing class, and I’d call my friend Sky to go in my stead.
Sky sees my grin and sighs.
”I can tell that I’m screwed. Know that I still love you,“ he says and I grin in his direction.
We enjoy a wonderful dinner with the people we love before everyone goes home and we clean up the kitchen.
We decided to go for a walk at the beach. It calms Luna‘s anxiety down. Hearing the waves hitting the shoreline.
When we’re both feeling sleepy, we decide to come back home and to go to sleep.
Later that night
Luna
I was tossing and turning in bed all night. I hate it when my anxiety is this bad. The walk at the beach earlier did help a bit. Still I feel anxious. I feel around for B and find his hand which I grip to hold onto when I feel that my anxiety is bad.
Sometimes I wonder if it’s worse now that I’m pregnant or if this anxiety level is normal. When will I ever feel normal? God if you’re up there please give me some good days. Please.
Either way I can’t sleep and my throat is as dry as the freaking Sahara.
I sigh deeply and take my hand out of Bryce’s.
I toss the comforter aside and look at B. Who is sleeping peacefully with one arm underneath his pillow. His chest naked. He said he felt like no clothes while sleeping. I just grinned and said ”you do you babe“.
He looks adorably hot. Is that even a thing? If not? It is now. I smile. I love nights like this. I feel safe with him.
He’s here with me when I feel like absolute shit and don’t think I deserve love and don’t want anyone around and also when I feel great and we have a great day at the beach. With some skinny dipping afterwards.
Sky is already mortified by us going skinny dipping. Sky is such a little prude and I love him to pieces.
I silently get out of bed and look if Bryce is still sleeping and when I make sure he is I walk on silent feet to the door, but before I can open it I walk back and give him a kiss on his forehead. Smoothing out the lines on his forehead.
I’ve recently thought if we’re saying I love you enough? But then I realized our most heartfelt emotions aren’t always hidden in the words we say. It’s in the small touches and expressions we share every single day.
We do love each other, but we don’t need to say it a hundred times a day. We say it through gestures and smiles. For example when Bryce makes me a fruit bowl, it shows his love and care that he has for me and that’s all I need. I don’t need big romantic gestures. I just need him and to feel him close to me. That’s all.
I realize I’m still touching his skin, it’s so smooth and soft. When I give it a whiff it smells like coconut? Looks like he got his expensive body lotion back. One that makes him look and smell and I quote “like a snack“ I roll my eyes and grin. I want to get out of bed to get something to drink.
Though before I can do that Bryce snakes an arm around my hip and pins me down into the mattress of the bed.
He whispers something into my ear that makes me blush. Who knew after so many years I can still blush down to my toes when he says things like that. I turn around to look at him and see his grin in place.
“Forehead kisses? What about french kisses?“ He smirks.
”B come on,“ I say grinning.
”A little tongue action,“ he wiggles his eyebrows and places kisses along my neck and collarbone.
”Now you’re making kisses gross. It sounds more like release the kraken,“ I say grinning and can feel his laugh on my skin. Meanwhile I try to wiggle away from underneath him.
Caterpillar style.
Though it feels way too good to be in bed with B. It doesn’t need any sexual intimacy to feel intimate.
”These lips were made for kissing,“ he makes kissing noises. Making me laugh.
”Only you babe. Only you,“ I say leaning more into him.
”I like those words. But why are you awake at I don’t even know what time it is,“ he says.
I crane my neck to see the pink digital numbers of my alarm clock on my bedside table.
Saying it’s 2.35 am
”It’s 2.35 am,“ I say relaxing and leaning into him again.
He lays his head against mine and we just lie there in bed.
”To answer your question I wanted to get myself some water. I’m pretty thirsty,“ I say.
I can feel B‘s nod against me.
”Want to tell me what’s really going on bug-a-boo?“ he asks.
”You’ve been watching way too much Ladybug & CatNoir,“ I say chuckling.
”Don’t act as if you didn’t like binge watching the show,“ he says defensively.
I sigh
”My anxiety is bad. That’s all,“ I say not wanting to turn around.
Shivering, I rub my arm to get warm.
B throws the blanket over us and we’re lying there in our own little cocoon.
I know B is giving me space and time to tell him what’s bugging me.
But I get anxious and can’t stand it not looking at him so I turn around.
He’s as calm as the sea.
”I got scared when I thought about the fact that I have to give birth in March next year,“ I say leaning closer to him.
”Why? What part scares you?“ he asks while playing with a strand of my blonde hair.
”Sitting in that chair. I’d rather run around the hospital naked covered in fig jam,“ I say not lying a bit.
Bryce looks at me sideways and just keeps staring until I look at him.
”That was rather specific,“ he says grinning and I know what he’ll ask next.
”Yes I love fig jam. Well all kinds of jam really,“ I say and before I can say anything more to that Bryce is out of bed, lifts me up and carries me downstairs.
”What are you doing?“ I ask clinging to him like a little snuggle muffin.
I must’ve mumbled snuggle muffin and he laughs.
”We are going downstairs to get you something to drink and I? Well I’ll test out the fig jam theory. You didn’t think I’d forget our little bet did you?“ he grins and I just laugh excited for my orgasm.
”At 3 am? Does fig jam count as dessert?“ I ask and he grins at me like the Cheshire Cat.
”There’s no time like the present. When it comes to you? Everything is a dessert or can be made into one,“ he says and puts me on our kitchen counter.
It’s nice to have moments like this. Where we can laugh and make each other happy.
He always makes my day brighter. It doesn’t matter if I had a bad day or a good one. There’s always something we can laugh about.
Hello November, we are all welcoming the warmer weather This month we are getting our jam comic on again with a great variety of styles. This week we have some great professional cartoonists hanging out with us and we got some ridiculous comics out of tonight's session.
October's meeting was still surprisingly cold and there was a lot of chatting and sharing of comics and zines that regulars have been producing. Everyone loves a comic meet and swap! It's always so great to see what people have been producing! Adelaide has so much talent!
