I’m getting ready to host a night of games and drinks. Sadly non-alcoholic for me. Yeah, the story of my life. At least for the next remaining month.
Tonight’s Maxis birthday. Yes,my best friend‘s birthday is on February 14th. On valentine‘s day. She doesn’t like Valentine’s Day so we’ll have a quiet night in with the girls. I did make her something. Even though she said no birthday gifts.
I stare at the rectangle gift I wrapped up earlier. All in pink. With a glittery satin bow on top.
I grin to myself as I hear the doorbell ring and put down the basket of freshly baked pizza bites and garlic bread I made earlier.
I open the door. And see it’s Maxi in leather shorts and a burgundy shirt, topped with scuffed up red Dr. Martens.
Some of her colorful tattoos peeking out. She’s holding a bottle of rosé in her right hand and a box of fruit for me in her left one.
”The woman of my dreams brings me a fruit bowl. Thank you milady.“
”Seriously? Another Bridgerton reference?“
I grin at her.
”It’s a great show. Even Adam likes it. Maybe on your third date, you can subtly suggest tuning into Bridgerton?“
Maxine just snorts.
”Yeah sure. I’ll suggest it, but no promises sugarplum.“
I sigh and hold the fruit bowl close to my chest. Ever since I got pregnant, I’ve been craving fruit. It’s insane. One night I had Bryce run out in boxer shorts to buy some watermelon and bananas. He was like here you go and went back to sleep. I grin at that memory.
I smile at Maxi.
”You’re a godsend you know that?“ I say and together we walk toward the kitchen. Me at a slower pace than Maxi.
”So who’s coming tonight?“ she asks and hops on the counter stealing a grape from the charcuterie board.
I slap her hand.
”No trying the goods. Those are for later,“ I say laughing.
She grins like the Cheshire cat and takes another one.
”To answer your question. Soraya, Evie, Meilani, Keiki and I. I asked Aubrey too. But she has a surgery so she can’t make it. Keiki will join us later,“ I say grinning.
Maxi catches on.
”Does she have a new guy in her life?“ Maxi hops off the counter and goes to the fridge to get herself a bottle of mint water.
I shrug.
”I have no idea. If she does? Then she’s keeping it to herself. I think she’s still hurt after Dylan broke things off over a text on her prom night. Sure Bryce took her and they had a great time. But I think she’s just careful,“ I say, pouring the rosé into glasses and assembling them on the counter one by one.
Maxi nods.
”Yeah that was a dick move. Seriously. I don’t get it. But hey Keiki is an amazing girl. Who’s in her second in college, to become a vet. And she’s going to find an amazing guy I’m sure,“ she says.
I glance at Maxi and then get the gift and put it behind my back.
She eyes me with suspicion.
”What? I swear to god if that’s a present behind your back…“
I wiggle my eyebrows.
”You’re going to what? I’m pregnant you can’t do jack shit.“
Maxine almost chokes on her bubbly drink.
”Why do you keep insisting on giving me presents sugarplum?“ Maxine asks me, her tone gone softer.
I shrug and reveal the pink glittery wrapped present behind my back.
”Because I love you and I wanted to give you something. It’s nothing big I promise.“
I give her the gift and she puts her mint water to the side.
She stares at the pink wrapping paper and then tears the wrapping to reveal a photo album I made.
She looks up at me. At a complete loss for words.
”Oh Lu.“ She asks and opens the photo album and goes through all the pages.
It starts with a quote
”There are many people to be close to. But no one is like you. That’s why I love you.“
She smiles and turns the page.
It’s pictures from all the years we’ve been friends. From bubble baths together, complete with champagne and chocolates. To us eating pizza and malasadas. Acting like complete dorks.
When she doesn’t say anything and just keeps turning the pages of the photo album I get a little nervous.
”I looked everywhere for the perfect present, so when I came short I just printed out all the photos we’ve ever taken together and put them together in an album.“
I nervously play with my engagement ring.
She looks up, puts the photo album aside and gives me a hug, careful not to crush me since I’m 8 months pregnant.
When we break apart she looks at me. Her eyes radiating joy and happiness.
”I’m so glad we’re friends. You have no idea. And this gift you made me? It’s so special, it’s the most beautiful gift I’ve ever gotten.“
She picks up the photo album again and points to a page with a hand painted sunset at Waikiki beach, where we sit side by side with our backs to the camera.
”You hand painted this. That‘s incredible. The time you took to make this. I said no presents but boy am I glad you still gave me one. Damn I love you sugarplum.“
”Love you too Maxi.“
We hug again and smile at each other. I’m happy I could make Maxi happy on her birthday.
We talk amongst each other when I hear the doorbell ring again.
Maxi waves me off before I can get it.
”I got it. You just finish whatever that is,“ she motions to me.
I’m making the fruit into star-shaped little snacks. So what? It looks cute.
Ever eaten a piece of mango or watermelon that looks like a star or a heart? Adorable.
When Maxi comes back I see Evie in a green spaghetti strapped dress.
Soraya in ripped jeans and a shirt, followed by Meilani who looks super cute in a flower print dress.
Meilani is also my Ob-gyn, she works together with Bryce and Aubrey at the Kuakini Medical Center here in Honolulu, Hawaii.
Both Soraya and Meilani are holding hands and stealing looks when they think no one is looking. So cute.
I smile at everyone.
”Hi guys. I’m so glad you could all make it tonight,“ I say and hug everyone.
”Sor I gotta say you’re perfume is quite strong. But you look very pretty,“ I say.
Sor groans.
”You know I changed my perfume twice because you said it’s too strong. I’m not changing this one,“ she says grinning.
”That’s okay. I think this one is less strong than the other two,“ I say and everyone gets seated around the table in the kitchen.
”Thank god for small miracles,“ Soraya grins at me.
Evie who’s holding a pink box in her hands gestures to Maxi who’s standing next to her and groans.
Everyone smiles.
Soraya and Meilani come closer too.
”You didn’t think we’d forget your birthday did you? You’re family. So we’re going to celebrate whether you like it or not.“ Evie grins.
I get out plates for everyone in the kitchen.
Maxi smiles reluctantly and opens the box.
Inside is a round cake. The cake is adorned with pink, purple and yellow edible flowers and topped with white frosting. And the cake says ”Happy Birthday Maxine.“
Maxi looks up and she’s close to tears I can tell.
”Aunt Grace made the cake. We just put it in a box.“ Evie says and winks at me. I grin. My mom sure knows how to make a good cake.
Meilani gets out matches and birthday candles.
She and Soraya put them on the cake and light the candles.
”Make a wish babe.“
I say and Maxi holds her hair to the side so it doesn’t catch on fire. She closes her eyes and blows out her candles in one go.
We all cheer and give her hugs and kisses.
”Thank you. You really know how to make a girl feel special on her birthday. Which happens to be on February 14th.“
We all grin and take out some bubbly and cake, and some snacks from the charcuterie board I made, and move to the living room.
I love the charcuterie board I assembled. I have to say I’m pretty proud of all the cheeses, fruits, and crackers. It looks like, dare I say it, a piece of art? I chuckle.
Comfortable is all I really need these days. Sitting down on the couch? Yes please! Carrying twins is a lot more straining than I thought, but I wouldn’t trade it in for anything in the world.
The others find a comfortable sitting position too. Keiki and Maxi were on one end of the couch, and Evie joined me. Soraya and Meilani sit together.
I look at my friends and family and am so happy we‘re all here together.
”I’m really glad we got to get together,“ Evi says while taking a sip of rosé and a bite of cheese.
”So any juicy stories? What have I missed?“ I ask around.
Maxi splutters her drink on herself.
”What your sex life not entertaining enough?“ Maxi asks.
”Oh it is. The other day we tried…“ I say and hear the door slam as Keiki walks inside just to catch the last sentence of our conversation.
”Can we please not talk about your sex life? Please. I’m already spending way too much time at my friend's Lexi’s house. Aubrey said it’s as if I’m living at their place. So please no sex stories,“ she says and joins us.
Keiki grabs a ball of cheese and a glass of rosé and moves to Maxi to give her hug.
”Happy Birthday Maxi.“ She says and Maxi hugs her back.
”Thanks Keiki.“
I smile at Keiki out of the corner of my eye.
”Yeah. What’s up with that? Anything you want to share Keiks?“ I ask innocently.
”Bryce warned me about that look,“ Keiki says.
I grin.
”What look? I’m just asking. About your not-boyfriend?“ I say grinning and sipping on my hibiscus lemonade.
”I…went on a date. But it was just one date. Please don’t make a big thing out of it,“ Keiki says and looks at all of us.
”We’d never do anything that’ll make you feel weird,“ Meilani says and the others nod.
”Mei is right. You’ll tell us when you’re ready. And when you do? We’ll all want to meet him. And I can’t wait to ask him all the questions,“ I say.
Keiki sighs.
”No! You and my brother will turn it into the Spanish inquisition,“ she says.
I laugh.
”We’ll be nice. Maybe,“ I add.
”Just stop it, Mooney,“ Evie interjects while munching on a star fruit.
We sit and laugh for a while. Enjoy the food, drinks and company.
”How about never have I ever,“ Maxi suddenly suggests and I grin at her.
We played that on Christmas two years ago and I got so drunk. I even asked my cactus if it was taken. Bryce recorded the whole thing. He still laughs about it. He said my flirting was cute.
”I’m not playing, never have I ever. I always lose clothes in the process,“ I say remembering the times B and I played.
”That’s not how you play,“ Sor says after taking a sip from her drink.
”It’s the dirty edition,“ I explain.
Keiki groans.
”Can I be excused for the rest of the evening? I do not want to hear about you and my big brother making out all the time. And FYI you’re not as quiet as you think at night,“ she asks and the others laugh.
I flush red.
”Oops. I’m sorry,“ I say. Maybe B and I should buy a soundproof door? Hmm. Maybe we can talk about that next time.
Maxi sighs.
”I need tequila shots for this,“ she says.
Soraya clinks her glass to Maxis.
”Yes. Please,“ she replies.
Evie chuckles.
”I think it’s nice,“ Evie says a longing in her voice.
I look at her. And she sighs lost in her thoughts.
”You okay Evie?“ I put my arm around her shoulders.
”Peachy. No, I’m not. I feel lonely and sad,“ she says but her voice sounds sad.
Soraya nods knowingly.
”I knew something was wrong. So what’s going on?“ she asks her sister.
Evie sighs, picking at invisible lint on her dress.
”Everyone got someone and I don’t. You know I love the job we have Sor. But seeing all these couples get married and start a family, it makes me want to have that too. Guess I’m unlucky when it comes to love,“ she says and sighs.
That gets me thinking.
”You’re not unlucky you just haven’t met the right guy, but you will. Any guy would be lucky to have you in his life. Don’t get discouraged.“ I say and she smiles quietly.
I grin suddenly when I remember my conversation with Aubrey from a few weeks ago. She said her brother starts his new job at the University of Hawaii. His name is Emry. Maybe he and Evie would be a good fit. We’ve talked a couple of times, and he’s extremely nice and has a great sense of humor. Someone who’d be perfect for my cousin Evie.
”I think I might have someone in mind,“ I said, munching on a piece of mango.
Everyone looks at me.
Maxi grins.
”How did you find him? Did you set up a tinder profile for Evie?“ she asks.
I stick out my tongue at Maxi and she blows me a kiss.
”I didn’t. He teaches at the University of Hawaii,“ I say.
Maxi raises her eyebrows.
”Really? What does he teach math?“ she chuckles.
I shrug.
”As a matter of fact he does,“ I say.
”Tell us more about him,“ Meilani chimes in.
”His name is Emry. He’s Aubrey’s brother. As I said he’s a professor at the University of Hawaii. He teaches math and molecular biology. He’s extremely nice and polite. Also, he’s very hot,“ I wink at Evie.
”Why don’t you use your old tinder profile, Eves?“ Soraya says.
”That’s a great idea,“ I say snatching Evie’s phone from the table before she has a chance to take it.
”Lunes don’t,“ Evie says.
I smile at her.
”Oh come on he’s hot and single. Give it a try maybe you’ll get lucky and it’ll be a match,“ I say.
Evie looks unconvinced.
”I don’t know looney,“ she says.
”Come on. Let’s just try. We could even go on a double date. Bryce and I will be there for moral support,“ I said nudging her.
Evie relents.
”He better be cute,“ she says.
”He’s very handsome,“ I say.
I unlock her phone.
”How did you know my password?“ Evie asks.
I bite my lip.
”I…uh…remember it from that last time you asked me to reply to a text because you were getting your nails done,“ I say and add.
”I’ve never looked through your phone pinky promise,“ I say and Evie nods.
We try and see if she can match with Emry.
Suddenly I see his pic and swipe. Crossing my fingers it’ll be a match.
The sound of a match makes me grin and let out a whoop and shimmy on the couch a bit.
”What happened? Did they match? Let me see,“ Keiki peeks over my shoulder.
I show her Evie’s phone.
”Woah Evie he’s so good-looking. I know since Lexi, Aubrey’s sister told me about her brother but I’ve never seen a pic of him. And that guys a professor? Suddenly I’m very interested in molecular biology. Maybe I could take a class?“ Keiki says thinking out loud and we all laugh.
Soraya clears her throat and we all look at her.
When I see Sor grin like the Cheshire cat, I know she’s up to something.
”What?“ I ask cautiously.
”One word. Jenga.“
I groan and Evie breaks out in laughter.
She and Sor high five. While everyone looks at us as if we’ve gone mad.
”Anyone want to clue us in?“ Maxi asks.
Evie is still laughing together with Sor. So I answer.
”When we were seniors in high school, we got bored during the winter holidays. We wanted to play board games but all the board games we had sounded boring, so we invented our own Jenga styled game. By drawing and painting things like truth or dare, take a shot or worst date versus best date on the Jenga pieces. Ever since then we always play it together when we get the time,“ I explain to the others.
Sor gets her bag and puts out all the pieces on the floor and nods at us.
”I can’t believe you still have it and that you brought it with you tonight.“ I shake my head grinning.
Sor grins.
”Come on, let's play.“ She says and we all agree.
So we all build the Jenga tower together and then Soraya turns to me.
”Hosts honor.“ Evie points to me to pick the first Jenga piece. I sigh and take the one in the right corner.
I turn the Jenga piece so that all can see what I’ve got.
It says ”2 truths and 1 lie“.
They all look at me expectantly.
I breathe out and try to come up with two truths and one lie.
”I have three tattoos. I used to work as a nude model during college sometimes and I did body shots at a party once. What is the truth and what is the lie?“
They look at me as if they’re seeing me for the very first time.
Keiki eyes me from left to right.
”Okay the second one has to be a lie.“
I shrug. No emotion betraying my face.
”I’d say the first one is a lie.“ Maxi says grinning.
When I start smiling they grin and know that the first one was a lie.
Keiki leans forward.
”Wait, didn't you say you bartendered during college?“
I smile at Keiki.
”I mean I did bartender throughout college.“
Maxi grins at me.
”Is that where you did body shots?“
I grin. ”I did.“
Then I get serious for a moment.
”But from time to time I stood in as a model. Nothing to r-rated. I could reveal as much as I liked. Because let’s be honest, scholarships don’t cover everything. So bartending and posing as a model paid the bills too.“
They all nod and then I nod in Maxis direction.
”Maxerella it’s your turn.“
She sticks out her tongue at my poor attempt at a nickname.
Maxi takes one from the top.
It says. ”Dance like a Ballerina.“
She groans.
”Uhhh. I like it. You can relive your glory days.“
She rolls my eyes at me.
”Let’s see a pirouette babe.“
”As milady wishes.“
”Ha! Bridgerton reference.“
I point my finger in Maxis direction and grin. Everyone just laughs. I get my phone ready to record this moment for eternity. Seeing Maxine dance ballet is a precious and rare moment, so I want to remember it.
Maxi gets her shoes off and makes a pirouette for all of us. When she’s down she bows slightly.
”Your mom would be so proud of you.“
Maxi laughs.
”Yeah I know. She says I still got what it takes to be a ballerina.“
We all grin and drink.
Meilani pulls out a Jenga piece and she gets ”sit on lap“.
Meilani looks at Soraya and Soraya grins.
”Have you popped the question yet?“ I ask and Soraya throws a raspberry at me, it lands on my face making me laugh. I pick it up and eat it.
Soraya blushes furiously, while Meilani grins.
”Luna!“
I shrug.
”What? Luna loves love.“
Keiki sighs.
”You’ve got to stop speaking in third person like Terry from Brooklyn 99.“
I smile and lean into Evie who sits next to me.
”Terry is great.“ I say not ashamed to love Terry, who’s amazing by the way.
We keep playing until late into the night.
As the night is dwindling down I start yawning and almost fall asleep on the couch nestled into the cushions.
”I think it’s time we wrap this party up. Because it looks like sugarplum is getting tired,“ Maxi says and stands up and covers me with my favorite green blanket.
I sigh, eyes closed.
”Sorry guys. But I’m just more tired than I would normally be,“ I say almost half asleep.
Meilani chuckles.
”You’re 8 months pregnant with twins. It’s normal to be tired,“ she says and I smile.
I fall asleep to the sound of the others cleaning up and putting the dirty dishes into the dishwasher.
The next thing I know is being carried upstairs.
I open my eyes and see a tired but grinning Bryce carrying me to our bedroom.
”I fell asleep didn’t I?“ I ask nuzzling closer.
I sense him chuckle.
”Yeah you looked like a baby pygmy goat,“ he says and lays me down on our bed.
”I love pygmy goats. I’d name her Daisy. B can I have a goat?“ I ask into my pillow.
He covers me with his body and turns on my nightlight illuminating the whole room in shades of blue. The night sky is literally in our room. So pretty.
”Sure I’ll get you a pygmy goat. We’ll let her run around the house. Chewing on everything. Sounds great,“ he says kissing me on my shoulderblade.
Too tired to comment on his sarcasm.
So I just smile and count small itty-bitty pygmy goats.
Summary: Luna and her cousins have their pizza night where the debate comes up pineapple on pizza or not.
Author‘s note: All characters belong to PB. I only own my OC‘s. (As a side note this was inspired my ask about your MC / OC favorite dish / favorite snacks.)
”Coming in hot,“ I hear Sky say loudly from the kitchen where Evie, Soraya, Keiki and I are assembling another pizza to be put into the oven.
We have our monthly pizza night. With wine, pizza and talks about everything.
It’s the one night we all have off and just try and relax.
Unfortunately Bryce had to pull a double shift, so he’ll be home later. Not to worry though we’ll put some pizza aside for him.
Evie is rolling out the dough while Keiki and Sor are preparing all the ingredients to be put on the pizza.
Sky gets a pizza out of the oven while he wears the apron ”Kiss the chef“ I got Bryce a while ago.
He slides the oven mitts off and takes a sip of his red wine.
”Are you guys seriously putting fruit on a pizza?“ he looks at the toppings with disgust.
Sor and Keiki look up.
”Sure we are dear brother,“ Sor says and offers him a pineapple piece.
I shudder. I love pizza but pineapple? Seems wrong to put that on pizza. Give me anything - except spicy - on a pizza and I’ll eat it.
But pineapple? Gross.
I drink from my glass filled with ginger ale, since my morning sickness is still an on-going show and I’m the main attraction.
”Pizza Hawaii has no right to be called pizza,“ I say between sips.
Everyone turns their heads in my direction, and I feel like a deer in headlights.
I shrug
Both Evie and Soraya stop what their doing
”Seriously?“ They ask in unison
”What? It’s true. It’s a weird combo that’s what it is,“ I say
Sky walks around the kitchen island and puts an arm around my shoulder.
”See my cousin has good taste,“ he says while grinning.
Evie rolls her eyes and Soraya just shakes her head at her brother.
”She’s our cousin too,“ says Evie
”Yeah but she’s got better taste than you, which makes her part of Team Sky,“ Sky retorts.
I eye him sideways
”Still working on the name,“ he admits.
”You should come up with a better one, because that was lame,” Keiki replies and takes a bite from the still hot pizza.
I laugh at that and break away at the awkwardness. I also didn’t want to cause a fight. Not over pizza anyway.
Pizza is sacred.
Everyone joins the laugh fest and we all continue to roll out dough and assemble pizzas.
———————————————————
Later when we’re sitting down at the table in the dining room we all breathe in the pizzas we made. We could’ve ordered in, but there’s something special about making pizza yourself. Sharing the time with family, while cooking together and making jokes. It’s relaxing and fulfilling at the same time. In short it’s just more fun.
I put down my piece when my phone vibrates on the table. I wipe my hands on a napkin and look down.
I frown as I start reading
It’s a text from Maxi
I put my phone down, trying to understand what went wrong.
Soraya‘s voice stirrs me out of my thoughts.
”Is something wrong?“ she asks her blue eyes worried.
I shake my head not sure
”I don’t know. Maxi just texted and asked if she can come by later,“ I sigh
”Was her date with Adam bad? Is that what happened?“ he asks leaning back in his chair
I shrug
”I honestly don’t know. But I wouldn’t know why it went wrong,“ I say loudly
”Was it because you went on a date with him?“ Evie asks
I shrug
”I don’t think so. It was a long time ago. He wouldn’t have gone out with Maxi, if he still had feelings for someone else. He’s not that type of guy,“ I say
The others shrug
I lean over to take another piece and see Soraya glued to her phone. She smiles while she types.
I nod to Sky and point with my eyes to Soraya. He nods in return getting the hint.
”Sor? Do you think Meilani would like a piece?“ he asks
Soraya looks up confused
”A piece of what?“ she asks
Sky and both say at the same time
”A piece of you,“ we smile and wriggle our eyebrows.
Soraya blushes deeply.
Evie grins like the chashire cat.
”Wanna share with the class?“ she asks leaning her elbows on the table.
”We’ve been texting a little. Since she couldn’t make it to family dinner. So Lunes gave me her number. Ever since we’ve been texting. You know getting to know each other,“ she says vaguely.
”Have you guys gone out on a date?“ Keiki asks from next to me.
She shakes her head
”No we haven’t. However, I did invite her to our next pizza night,“ she admits unsure if we’ll have anything against it.
We all grin.
”How about Seilani? Or Moraya?“ Sky asks
Soraya takes her napkin and throws it at him. Evie and Keiki just grin at their shenanigans.
It lands on his face and he just doubles over in laughter.
I smile at Sor
”I think both sound great and knowing Meilani she’ll like both of them,“ I say.
Sky zeroes his gaze in on me.
”Do you and Bryce have a couples name?“ Sky asks
I look with horror at him and shake my head.
He snaps his fingers
”How about Bruna? Or Lyce?“
I keep shaking my head at him.
”Please don’t. Both sound awful,” I say between bites.
Everyone laughs at my discomfort.
We continue to eat and laugh. Sharing stories. Laughing. Teasing each other like only family can do.
My cousins help me with the dishes and cleaning up the messy kitchen.
We almost get into a water fight, but stop at the last second. Because no one wants to clean that up.
Later Keiki takes her bag and her backpack. She’s going to spend the night at a friends house from college, so Soraya will drive her there.
I give everyone a hug
”Drive safe guys,“ I wave at them.
When everyone left and took home some pizza, I get out and take a seat on one of the comfy chairs on the porch. I took my favorite blanket to cover my body. That’s when I hear a car engine coming closer. At first I think it’s Bryce, but then I see long brown hair and realize it’s Maxi.
She walks slowly up to the house.
She hasn’t noticed me yet and is about to knock when I clear my throat.
She jumps back
”You scared the bee jeezus out of me sugarplum,“ she says putting her hand over her racing heart.
I grin
”Sorry I couldn’t resist,“ I‘m about to get up when she stops me
”No need to get up, I can get myself a piece of pizza and get back outside,“ she says and with those words she disappears inside the house.
Moments later she’s out with a steaming plate full of pizza slices.
She offers me one too. Even though I ate earlier I’m not going to say no to another slice.
I chew on my bite of pizza and when I swallowed I look at her.
”Want to tell me what’s wrong? I feel as if we haven’t talked in a while,“ I say quietly into the silence. The only sound the cicadas and the healing wind from the palm trees.
She looks over at me.
”I know and I want us to do more together. I guess we’ve just both been busy,“ she says and scoots closer to me.
”Is it about Adam?“ I ask tentatively
She nods
”Yeah. You know the worst part?“ she asks me
I shake my head
”He’s really nice. He’s not an asshole. He’s a genuinely nice guy,“ she stops
”So what’s stopping you from going out with him again?“ I ask
She sighs and looks up at the stars as if they hold all the answers
”I feel as if I don’t deserve him,“ she admits quietly
I raise my eyebrows at her
”What? Why? That doesn’t make any sense,“ I say more confused than ever
She toys with the napkin on her plate.
”Ever since my dad died…“ she stops again and I give her a side hug and kiss her forehead in silent comfort
”Ever since dad died, everything turned to shit. I quit college and became a tattoo artist. My mom is disappointed and my brother and I…we stopped talking,“ she says on a loud exhale.
I just keep sitting there to show I’m here and I’m listening.
She goes on
”Caelum said I threw away my chance at a great education, to chase a hobby,“ she says her voice raw and full of emotions.
”I don’t think your mom is disappointed. I think she was trying to grieve in her own way. Maybe she didn’t know how to handle everything. She just lost her husband and had two children to raise,“ I say
Maxi shrugs
”I know it was hard for her. Raising two kids. Taking care of the funeral. Managing her dance studio. The bills that have been piling up,“ she sighs again.
I lean back and say
”Have you tried reaching out to your brother?“ I ask
”I don’t know if I feel ready for it,“ she says
I smile softly
”You’re never ready,“ I say ”How about you just text him? And see where it goes from there?“ I ask
She looks up and nods
”Maybe you’re right. It would be great to have my brother back,“ she says a soft smile playing on her lips.
I smile at her
”Thanks for noticing. As your best friend I’m always right,“ I say grinning
She snorts
”Don’t push your luck babes,“ she says and we stay like this for a while until I realize I haven’t asked her the important question.
I look at her as she sits up and looks at me with squinted eyes
”What?“ she asks slowly
”So? Spill! Is Adam a good kisser?“ I say
She tries to avoid the question, but I keep looking at her
”I wanna know if you locked lips,“ I make kissing noises
She rolls her eyes at me.
”What are you 12?“ She crosses her arms
”Maxi and Adam are sitting on a tree…“ I don’t get to finish because she starts laughing
”Okay okay. Yes we kissed. It was actually pretty good,“ she relents
I wriggle my eyebrows
”Not long and then you’re at second base,“ I smirk
She just shakes her head at me.
We talk until she starts yawning and says she’ll go home. She kisses me on my cheek, gets into her car and drives off.
———————————————————
I stand in the kitchen getting myself some water, when I hear Bryce getting home. Putting his keys in the half crescent shaped bowl I made recently.
He greets me with a hug and a kiss that I don’t want to end.
He laughs
”Looks like someone missed me,“ he says putting his messenger bag on the floor in the kitchen.
I smile walking towards the fridge to get some slices of pizza out to heat them up for him in the microwave.
He hugs me tightly from behind. Putting his hands over my small baby bump. I still can’t believe I’m already showing a little.
I grin and turn slightly to look into his eyes.
”I missed your lips,“ I say
He grins and gives me another kiss.
”I love hearing that,“ he says and we get interrupted by the sound of the microwave, signaling that the pizza is heated up.
He sighs
”Uhh pizza,“ and digs in and then stops
”Ugh. Is this pineapple?“ he swallows and makes a disgusted face.
”That’s why you’re one of my favorite men who doesn’t like pineapple on pizza,“ I say and give him another slice, this one is with pepperoni, onions and jalapeños.
He gives me a look
”One of? That means there’s someone else? Lunes? Hello? Come on. The guy who doesn’t like pineapple on pizza needs to know,“ he says
I just grin and go out into the garden. Bryce takes his slice with him and joins me outside.
”You know you’re my favorite. In case you‘re wondering I’m referring to Sky. We had a small debate about pineapple or no pineapple,“ I say
”What’s the verdict?“ he asks
I sit down on the grass and he joins me
”Three against two. Now it’s three against three. Making it a tie,“ I say pulling out some grass
”Hmm,“ he hums
”What?“ I ask kind of dreading the answer
He smiles at me.
”You‘re my favorite person too,“ he says and together we laugh and play a game of would you rather. Food edition of course.
Talking well into the night. The stars twinkling above us.

Spring came and is now making room for the summer that’s yet to come. The air is full of promise and new beginnings. Perfect weather for a wedding.
Hayley and Ethan are getting married today at the Steinhardt Conservatory. It’s a wonderful venue.
Sienna, Jackie, Aurora and Kyra are her brides-maids and Hayley’s sister, Isabella is her maid of honor.
Bryce and I took some time off from work and took the next flight to Boston.
We flew in a couple of days earlier. So as to not be jet lagged the day of the ceremony.
Hayley and Ethan decided they wanted to move fast with their wedding, because they didn’t want to wait anymore. Honestly? Why should they? __________________________________
I turn around so Soraya can help me with my zipper, she helped me pick out a dress for the wedding. All three of my cousins were invited. So we all flew in together.
Keiki is sick so we left her with my parents and grandparents who are going to have an amazing time together.
She sent us pics of how she eats chicken noddle soup and my aunt, my mom and my grangran are watching the Devil wears Prada with her. I even saw dad tune in.
I love watching that. My go-to movie when I need good vibes.
We decided to book a hotel room. As much as we appreciated Hayley and Ethan’s offer to stay at their place we just didn’t want to bother them so we booked a hotel room and now we’re getting ready. Before we’re off to the wedding.
I’m wearing a hot pink off-the-shoulder dress. Let’s just say the style is very unique. Maxine decided to wear a gold velvet dress, with spaghetti straps and a side slit. She put her hair in a bun. She looks damn good.
Evie opted for an off-the-shoulder crimson red dress. And Soraya chose a champagne colored satin dress, with a side slit and spaghetti straps. Both are wearing their hair down.
Bryce and Skylar are both getting ready in the adjoining room.
I can’t wait to see how they dressed up. Hopefully there are going to be suspenders involved. What can I say I love me some suspenders.
“We all look so glammed up,“ I say shimmying in my dress. Feeling a little like cinderella.
“You’re so cute when you’re excited,“ Soraya comments and hands me and Evie my clutch.
“We’ve got to commemorate this moment with a selfie. Get in here lovely ladies,“ I turn my phone to selfie mode and we all get into the frame and I snap a couple of pics.
I put my phone into my clutch as the door opens and Sky and Bryce get inside.
Sky is putting his hand over his eyes.
“Is it safe? Because there’s only so much a guy can unsee,“ he peeks between his fingers.
Bryce laughs at his silliness.
“Don’t be a prude,“ he comments.
Soraya and Bryce fist bump each other.
Sky sighs and points into Bryce and Soraya‘s direction.
”You two are already ganging up on me. It’s kind of unfair Sor you should be on my side. Not on Bryce’s, “ he pouts
Bryce laughs
”What can I say the ladies love me,“ he says and I clear my throat and he dials back
”I meant this wonderful lady in pink loves me,“ he kisses my forehead.
”Better,“ I reply as everyone else laughs.
“Let’s go before we’re late to the ceremony,“ Evie says and we all get to the the car that we rented.
“This is a gonna be a tight squeeze,“ Sky comments as we all get inside.
“You’d know all about that,“ Maxi says from the backseat.
“Burn,“ Soraya snickers
“I’ll have you know I got laid last night,“ Sky says defensively.
Evie laughs and I join.
“By whom,“ Bryce asks while he turns on the car.
“Pfft. I don’t kiss and tell,“ he says
Soraya is the first one to reply
“Meaning that you don’t remember her name nor did you take her number,“ she smiles triumphantly.
Sky sighs
“Alright fine. I don’t remember her name and I didn’t ask for her digits. Though I think she scrawled something on my arm, but I can’t be sure,“ he admits looking on his arm. Where you can see smudged numbers.
We all holler with laughter while we drive past downtown of Boston.

As we arrive a lot of people have already arrived and are seated. We walk inside and the first thing I notice is the airiness of the venue. It’s so clean and fresh. As if you stepped into a fairytale.
Beautiful white flower arrangements everywhere, with hints of azure blue as far as the eye can see.
White chairs are put inside and the most breathtaking view is the glass domed ceiling. I lift my head above and just marvel at its beauty.
The art you could create right here. Ugh. I’d sit in here all day. All the natural light streaming in through the windows.
I can see Ethan standing at the front in a sandy colored tuxedo, looking nervous.
Next to him is his best man. That must be Tobias Carrick, who I haven’t had the chance to meet yet. But he looks pretty nice.
I wave at Ethan and he smiles back softly, waving back.
We all sit down. You can hear chattering around us.
A couple of seconds later we hear the first tunes of Adele’s - Make you feel my love and we all start to rise.
First Jackie walks down the aisle, in a light blue satin dress, with spaghetti straps. Carrying a white bouquet with blue accents.
Followed by Aurora, Sienna and Kyra.
That’s when we see Hayley entering, with her dad by her side.
She’s wearing a beaded off-the-shoulder, tulle gown. With a thin veil adorned by white lace. Her long blonde hair styled in soft waves and a few strands are being held back by a clip, studded with pearls.
Light make-up and just some small diamond earrings is all the jewelry she’s wearing.
She walks slowly, her bouquet has also some blue accents next to the white flowers. But there’s more blue than white.
I think everyone gasped in awe when she walked in.
She’s practically floating towards the aisle.
When she reaches the front her dad kisses her cheek and she’s standing in front of Ethan who is smiling and unveiling Hayley who grins.
“Couldn’t wait could you,“ she says and everyone around them laughs.
Both of them look so happy. I can’t keep still, straining my neck to see, since even with heels I’m small.
“Wanna sit on my lap? So you can see?“ Bryce smiles at me and whispers.
I smack him and try to hide a smile.
“I’ll manage,“ I reply.
Bryce just chuckles and kisses my temple.
”Too bad,“ he says.
Sienna hands both Ethan and Hayley two pieces of paper. That must be their wedding vows.
Hayley clears her throat.
“Wow I can’t remember the last time I was this nervous,“ she chuckles nervously before she continues.
I clasp Bryce’s hand and lean onto him. He just smiles warmly.
“When I first met you I couldn’t believe it was really you. I’ve had a crush on you for so long, and then I started working with you and realized there’s much more under the exterior than meets the eye. A caring, emotional, at times rude and sarcastic man.
Who is such an amazing doctor. Who cares so deeply about people. That sometimes you care too much. That’s the first reason I fell in love with you. The second I won’t mention since my parents are here,“ she clears her throat again and people chuckle
She goes on.
“I knew from the first moment we were soulmates. Because my heart comes alive when I’m with you. No one knows me like you do. No one comes to my defense faster than you. You’re the man I want to share a life with, have children one day and grow old. Because you make me happy when we’re together. Everything turns into background music. All I see is you. I promise to love you every day,“ she puts down her piece of paper.
I think I saw Ethan dabbing away a tear, but I wasn’t sure. Must be the light filtering in. Creating a mirage.
He smiles before he speaks.
“When I first saw you, I thought to myself. She’s way too beautiful to be a doctor. Then I saw you in action and I knew I was wrong. You work hard for everything that you accomplish. Going far and beyond to make everyone feel included and loved. That is something I admire the most about you. This warmth that never fades. Waking up next to you, seeing your beautiful smile, it lifts me up every day. I can’t wait to spend the rest of my life with you. Making me into the man I’m today. I promise to love you every day,“ he says
That’s when we all see Jenner Ethan’s dog wearing a blue bow-tie coming down the aisle. Oh my god that is so adorable.
Maxine leans over to me and whispers.
”That’s the most adorable thing I’ve ever seen. How well do you think they trained him?“ she asks and I shrug my shoulders.
”No idea,“ I say smiling and we both look back to the front.
He’s carrying with him a tiny basket in his mouth. Ethan bends down and pets him. He takes the rings out of the basket.
Hayley takes one of the rings, while Ethan keeps the other.
The officiant goes on smiling softly at Jenner who keeps staring up at him.
“Do you Hayley Georgina Valentine take Ethan Jonah Ramsey to be your wedded husband, to cherish in love and friendship, in strength and in weakness, in success and in disappointment, to love him faithfully, today, tomorrow, and for as long as the two of you shall live?“
He looks expectantly at Hayley and she says
“Oh yes definitely,“ and Ethan just shakes his head and smiles. The officiant turns to Ethan and says as he takes the wedding band to put onto Hayley’s finger
“Do you Ethan Jonah Ramsey take Hayley Georgina Valentine to be your wedded wife, to cherish in love and friendship, in strength and in weakness, in success and in disappointment, to love her faithfully, today, tomorrow, and for as long the two of you shall live?“
He slides the ring onto her finger and lightly kisses her fingertips.
“I more than do,“ he says.
“With the power vested in me I know declare you husband and wife. You may now kiss the bride,“ he smiles at both of them.
Ethan takes Hayley’s face into his hands and gives her a long kiss.
“I think he used tongue,“ Evie says when an older lady a row in front of us looks at her and says “Shhh,“ and then turns back.
“Did she just sush me? So rude,“ she smiles and shakes her head at the older lady.
We all smile at each other.
Ethan and Hayley walk hand-in-hand down the aisles to get outside. Since the reception is going to be held right here in the garden.
Hayley blows kisses at our row and we all smile and wave.
We’re all walking towards the exit together.
“God, that was so beautiful,“ I say and Evie and Sor nod.
“So fucking beautiful,“ Maxine says in a watery voice.
“That dress though? Ugh. It was just right,“ Evie adds.
The garden has a part in the back. Where we see people are already heading.
Hayley and Ethan decided they wanted to hold the reception outside.
The garden looks fantastic.
Rounds of chairs have been put out, together with long tables. To accommodate everyone. Fairy lights have been put out for later when it gets darker. Giving it a warm and inviting feeling. Like a soft, cozy blanket.
Bouquets of white flowers have been put on the tables. Together with white candles, spreading their warm and soft light.
Hayley and Ethan have their own table at the front. Surrounded by all their loved ones.
I also spot an open bar and outside kitchen.
Seems as if the wedding guests can just choose from the menu that’s been laid out onto the plates and the food is being prepared right here, right now.
I have to check out that dessert table. God. How to just pick one? Hmm maybe I’ll just try a couple.
I giggle and Bryce looks at me.
”What’s so funny?“ he asks and I point towards the dessert table and he nods in understanding.
”The good thing is you can choose more than one,“ he says and I nod.
”That was the idea. Because I know I couldn’t just pick one,“ I admit.
We walk around towards our table when I spot Hayley who sees us coming closer. She almost jumps ahead. Wanting to greet us.
“We’re so happy you could make it. Well almost all of you. I sent Keiki some well wishes,“ she says.
“Congrats on your nuptials,“ I hug both Hayley and Ethan.
“Your vows were just ugh…so pretty,“ I say
Hayley nudges Ethan.
“They were weren’t they angel cake?“ she asks him.
Ethan groans.
“I told you to not call me that in public,“ he says.
Hayley laughs and says.
“We’re amongst friends,“ she says.
“Who are going to mercilessly tease you about it,“ a new voice says next to me.
When I turn around I see Tobias heading our way with a tray of bubbly for us.
“Luna right? Hi I’m Tobias. We haven’t met officially, but I’ve got to say Bryce has good taste,“ he says handing me a glass of hibiscus flavored juice.
“I think so too. But he didn’t choose me, we chose each other, but thank you for noticing, “ I wink at him.
Tobias looks lost for words.
Ethan clinks my glass with his. While Bryce puts his hand on my hip. Signaling to everyone I’m taken.
“I knew I liked you for a reason,“ Ethan says as Tobias still stands there. Then he shakes it off and laughs whole-heartedly.
“No offense meant,“ he says and the others also take some champagne from the tray.
“It’s all good I promise. I was so excited to meet you. Since I’ve only heard good things about you. Is it true you know a lot of embarrassing stories about Ethan?“ I ask him and he smiles wickedly.
”Oh if you only knew, I’ll gladly share,“ he promises me and I’m all excited.
While I can hear Ethan groan next to Hayley.
We all laugh, enjoy a drink and talk amongst each other.

Some later I hear a clink on a glass and I see Bella is trying to get everyones attention.
“I’m sure everyone enjoyed the wedding. So let me start off the reception right with a toast. I’ll even start. When you guys first started dating, I was hesitant to trust you. You seemed a bit too unreal. Handsome, not an idiot, successful and you have good taste? You two thought you were so sneaky, but nice try. We’re twins after all, so we know each other pretty well. I knew Hayley was dating someone she really loves,“ she grins at them. “I mean come on. She had your book for crying out loud, and when she called me from the bathroom and told me she’s going to work with the Ethan Ramsey, I knew you guys were meant to be. So here’s to the lucky couple. Cheers,“ she takes a sip of her drink and everyone around us echoes her cheers.
Sienna is next with her toast.
“I’m probably a little biased since Hayley is my best friend and fellow dolphin. We have matching tattoos to prove it. I couldn’t be happier today that you guys got married. You were dancing around each other for so long and you deserve all the love in the world. Thank god I’m wearing water proof mascara. So I don’t care if I cry. Congrats. Cheers to you guys,“ she says and we all laugh and dab at some errand tears.
I see Bryce standing up and also clinking his glass. He looks at me to ask me if it’s okay if he makes a toast.
I nod encouragingly and he gives me a light kiss.
“Where to start? There are so many embarrassing stories I could tell…but I don’t want to embarrass Hayley too much, she does enough things to embarrass Ethan, so she more than makes up for it. Right angel cake?“
Everyone hollers with laughter.
“Ethan I think it speaks volumes that you’d let Lahela embarrass you at your own wedding. Lahela respect,“ Tobias nods at Bryce and drinks at his words.
Ethan just smiles.
“Oh don’t worry. Bryce is getting married. I’ve got a couple of stories to share,“ he smirks.
I grin.
“You have embarrassing stories about B? Oh you’ve gotta share. I could bribe you with some really old whiskey,“ I say.
He laughs so hard that Hayley has to pat his back a couple of times. After he recovered he says.
“Trust me I’ll do this for free,“ he says and coughs a couple of times.
I smile at that.
Bryce smiles and continues.
“While the old man recovers, I’ll just keep going. I’ve known Hayley for some time now and I’m really happy for you guys. You’re a wonderful couple. You give off so much love vibes, it’s almost a little creepy. Cheers to you guys,“ he says and says drinks to his toast.
I laugh at his words and I can see that Rafael and Elijah are laughing so hard they almost spill their drinks.
“Ugh please. As if you’re not whipped,“ I say to him and he laughs at that.
Ethan points his drink in my direction.
“I’ll drink to Lunas comment. Couldn’t have said it better myself,“ he says
My cousins and Maxine all laugh.
Soon we all order something off the menu to eat.
I’m starving. I was barely holding on. Thankfully we could order and when our food arrived I almost inhaled it.
__________________________________
Some time later I excuse myself to use the restroom.
As I come back from it I go to the bar and order a drink, that’s when I hear two women next to me whispering among themselves as I wait for my ginger ale.
“It’s despicable. She gets to lead the Diagnostics Team and she gets to marry the guy? I wonder if she would show me exactly what tricks she used in the bedroom. Because sleeping your way to the top gets a whole new meaning,“ they both snicker at that.
People like that make my blood boil. Why do they have to ruin someone’s day and make it about themselves? If they don’t like them why did they come to the wedding in the first place?
“Well if you wanted to lead the Diagnostics Team, all you had to do was show that you’re good at your job, instead of only being mean gossipers,“ I say and take my drink.
“And who are you?“
The blonde one in the gold dress asks looking me up and down, though I just raise an eyebrow not rising to the bait. That’s when her friend whisper yells.
“That’s the one who snagged Lahela,“ the brunette says in her purple dress. I think her name is Mallory or Melanie I can’t remember exactly.
I laugh.
“Wow. First of all my name is Luna and second of all I didn’t snag anyone. Bryce and I fell in love. Which is clearly something you ladies know nothing about, going by your conversation and your snide comments. This is a wedding. If you can’t enjoy it, maybe you should just leave,“ I say to them my voice getting sharper.
“We were invited like everyone else from the hospital staff,“ the blonde one replies.
“I’m sure Hayley would never invite someone who treats her disrespectfully or talks bad about her behind her back,“ I defend Hayley, getting angrier by the second.
The brunette laughs but in a mean and bitter tone.
“You would know about that. Being the rebound and the second choice,“ they both laugh at their petty comment.
While my own anxiety rises to the top and I’m about to unleash a pretty mean comment, that’s when I feel a soft hand at my elbow and when I turn around I see Ethan standing by my side.
“Is there a problem ladies?“ Ethan asks putting his arm over my shoulder and squeezing gently.
”Of course not Dr. Ramsey, we were just chatting,“ they both splutter and turn red. Caught gossiping and then lying about it to try and safe face.
His usually warm blue eyes, turned glacier blue as he raises a dark eyebrow in their direction.
”From where I‘m standing you were just trying to ruin a wonderful day. What’s even worse you were insulting not just me, which I can live with, since I don’t care about your opinion of me. But you insulted my wife and our dear friend. Something I won’t tolerate. So if you don’t want to be here then kindly fuck off,“ he says and his words warm my heart.
No one outside my family and friends has ever stood up for me like this.
”We meant no offense Dr. Ramsey,“ the blonde one says but her friend tries to make her shut up since Ethan’s gaze swivels towards her and he just gives her a dead stare.
”If you didn’t mean any offense then you shouldn’t have opened your mouth. If you’d put your talents elsewhere maybe you’d have an inch of the success that these wonderful two ladies have worked so hard for. There’s something I’ve learned in life. You can teach people skills, but you cannot teach them character. I think that applies to both of you. We’ll address this once I’m back from my honeymoon,“ he says and they’re silent and don’t utter a word.
They look at each other and both just say their goodbyes and leave.
They probably wouldn’t know how go up against the two of us anyway. All the while they continue to talk trash about nice and genuine people. If toxic and bad vibes had a face, it would be them.
He turns to me and gives me a concerned once over.
“Don’t listen to anything those women have to say. Honestly. They don’t deserve to be here on our day. All they do is spread negativity and hate. You’re not second choice or a rebound. You hear me Luna?“ I nod along.
Their words still stinging. They hit their mark.
Ethan points to my drink while my hands are shaking slightly, he takes it out of my hands.
“Slow and deep breaths okay? Breathe with me,“ he instructs and slowly we both breathe in and out. After a few seconds passed my breathing returns to normal and my hands aren’t shaking anymore. I firmly grasp my drink and take a big gulp.
“I don’t know why I let their words affect me so much,“ I say and smile up at him. Since he’s a giant compared to me and my 5‘0 feet. Well 5‘1 feet in heels.
“Because it’s a sore spot and you can’t help but wonder. But know this. You and Bryce are perfect for each other. There’s no way he chose you because you and Hayley are similar. Which you aren’t. You might both have blonde hair, but that’s where the similarities end,“ he says and continues “You’re both uniquely beautiful. And that’s what counts. Not some bitchy comments from envious people,“ he finishes.
I give him a big hug and after a couple of seconds when he doesn’t hug me back immediately I look up and say
”You’re supposed to hug a person back. Just do it you’ll feel much better,“ I mumble into his shirt.
He laughs and hugs me back and then he steps back
”Thank you, it’s truly good to know that there are still nice people around here. Hayley is a lucky woman to have found you,“ I say.
”Bryce is lucky as well. You’re good for him and vice versa,“ he says and I can see he’s blushing.
”Are you blushing? So cute. Your secret is safe with me,“ I smile.
He nods.
”Well with me and Bryce, and my cousins. Ehhh. Maybe it’s not so safe after all,“ I shrug.
He groans. He takes his ordered drink and together we rejoin the festivities.
Everyone is dancing and soon Bryce and I hit the dance floor together with everyone else. If he noticed something happened he doesn’t say it out loud.
B knows me well enough to know I need some time to gather my thoughts, before telling him anything.
I can see Maxine and Rafael dancing together. Next to Sienna and Sky. Even Jackie joined with Soraya. Both of them smiling. Hmmm. They look like an interesting couple.
While Evie films everything for her picta live story.
All in all it‘s a beautiful ceremony of two people who are in love and want to share it with the world.
Despite those comments from earlier, that stirred up some residual feelings that I still have. I know it’s silly but sometimes I can’t help myself.
As we’re dancing to a slower song Bryce tips up my chin so he can look into my eyes.
“Wanna tell me what’s wrong?“ he asks while his hands move lower.
“Are you trying to cop a feel?“ I laugh and he winks.
“Maybe, but I know what you’re doing. So stop trying to change the subject,“ he asks his tone serious.
I sigh while I rest my hands on his chest, playing with the suspenders. He discarded his suit jacket earlier. Dare I say it, but he looks so fucking good in his outfit.
I sigh deeply.
“There were two women I don’t know and they were talking badly about Hayley and Ethan. They were saying how she used some tricks and slept her way to the top to get to lead the Diagnostics team and to get married to Ethan. Saying how I snagged you.“ I say and then add. ”They‘re judging our love, without even knowing any details. I hate people who take those kinds of liberties,“ I say.
Bryce sighs at my words.
”That’s a new low even for them,“ he says shaking his head ruefully.
I look up
“You know them?“ I ask curiously.
He nods
“I wish I didn’t. Emily and Sascha. They’re a new sort of mean. Even worse than your average gossiper or mean girl,“ he says and continues while we sway back and forth.
“They never liked Hayley or any of us for that matter. They weren’t invited to hang out with us. We’ve all worked hard to get where we are now. And not by sleeping our way to the top. I feel like women are always more prone to be accused of sleeping with someone higher-up because they got a certain position. Instead of congratulating someone for their success, they tear them down,“ he sighs.
I continue.
”Actually Ethan came by and scared them off. I can defend myself, but I was glad he was there. They were so scared of the consequences they might have to face,“ I say and smile.
Bryce kisses my forehead.
”I’m glad Ramsey showed up. Trust me I wouldn’t have had such nice things to say,“ he admits while he spins me around and then back to him.
”Well if you count saying kindly fuck off as nice, sure than he was nice,“ I reply and Bryce pauses while we dance, but then he picks it up again. Smiling to himself.
”He’s a good guy. At first when I learned that he and Hayley got together and later on that they were engaged? I felt weird about it. Not because I still harbor feelings. But because I was genuinely happy for them, and truly elated when I thought of starting to plan our own wedding and then the most important part the honeymoon and the wedding night,“ he whispers and steals a kiss.
I smile shyly.
”Is that really how you feel? I’m not trying to ruin the mood or put a damper on things. It’s just comments like those sometimes make me insecure and then I’m thinking what if…“ I don’t get to finish.
”No what ifs,“ he kisses me and interrupts my word vomit.
I smile simply happy at his words, but before I can kiss him I hear another voice.
”Oh for the love of god. Please get a room,“ we hear a voice next to us and see Ethan and Hayley dancing together.
”You first Ramsey,“ Bryce blows him a kiss and Ethan just rolls his eyes.
Hayley laughs and retorts.
”So that wasn’t your hand that grabbed my ass earlier?“
She grins up at him lovingly.
When Ethan doesn’t respond immediately, all of us start laughing.
”She got you there man,“ Bryce says.
Hayley leans over to us.
”Don’t forget to get in line, I’ll be tossing the bouquet in a couple of minutes. But I promised Cinderella here another dance,“ she laughs at Ethan‘s facial expression.
”I can’t wait,“ I say and they both turn into another direction.
Bryce and I dance to another slow song when I voice an idea I’ve had for some time.
”I actually wanted to discuss something with you regarding our wedding planning,“ I smile and continue.
”How about we book Sunset Moments for that. It’s my cousins wedding planning business. I think they’d make this memorable and I don’t know …I trust them. They know us the best and…“ I run out of words to explain why they‘re so awesome.
Bryce just shakes his head.
”You don’t have to explain why they’re perfect. I already love them like a family. I hope they feel the same. So if they’d be willing to to do it. Sure I’m in,“ he says quietly.
”Bryce Andrew Lahela. Of course they love you. You’re amazing, wonderful and caring. Who wouldn’t love you?“ I say and give him a kiss.
”You forgot to mention one thing,“ he says his voice getting lower and he whispers in my ear so only I can hear him.
I‘m blushing by the time he’s done.
”I can’t believe you just said that,“ I say while I probably look like a fire truck.
He laughs.
”It’s not like anybody heard me say it. Doing all that yoga has certainly made you bendy. So you won’t hear any complaints from me,“ he winks and together we get off the dance.
I join the other ladies for the tossing of the bouquet. I think it’s fun. I stand in the back, because well people were elbowing each other and I don’t want to walk away with bruises.
Bryce shouts in my direction and I look at him.
”Go get it babe,“ he winks at me and I just shake my head and laugh.
Hayley turns around
”Is everyone ready?“ she shouts and as she tosses the bouquet really high everyone is trying to grasp it. Elbowing one another to the side.
All of a sudden I feel a tiny weight in my outstretched hands. It seems the bouquet fell into my hands. I haven’t even really tried to catch it.
I stare down at it and see Hayley coming my way. Grinning from ear to ear.
”Congrats you caught it,“ she says and winks at me.
Did she want me to catch it? I smile and Bryce comes over.
”That’s my girl,“ he says.
I’m too stunned to say anything other than just smile. While I’m being surrounded by my family and friends.
It was truly a fantastic day.

”If you're cold and alone when you wake
Making all of the same mistakes
When your heart's given all that it had
But they say they don't love you back
When the party's over and your friends have all gone
And you're wondering where it all went wrong
I'll come running when you call out my name
And it'll always be this way
I'll be there for you
No matter what you're going through
I'll be there with you
Anytime that you need me to
When there's no one else around
On your last breath, calling out
Trust me, my love won't let you down“
It’s a beautiful Saturday morning. B and I are in the middle of driving to my aunt and uncle’s place to have breakfast with my cousins.
My uncle and my aunt went camping, while my cousins are staying at their parents place.
The blue sea is sparkling in the sunlight. While a summer breeze is wafting through our open Jeep. Letting in the salty wind, bringing with it a hint of hibiscus. I hang my head out the window and Bryce takes one look at me and laughs.
”You’re like a dog, all you need is your tongue hanging out to the side,“ he comments and takes a left turn.
I try it but only look ridiculous in the end.
”I wish my tongue was longer that way I could actually let it hang out like a little dog,“ I say sadly.
He shakes his head.
”This is officially the weirdest conversation that you and I had this far,“ he says and we get closer to my aunt and uncles place.
It’s this huge house that they’ve been looking for such a long time and when they finally found it they were over the moon.
It’s located close to the beach.
There’s a huge lawn, adorning the place. A two-story house, made out of wood on the outside and painted a marvelous jade green. Surf boards are leaned against the outside of the house.
Palm trees, and flower beds with vibrant colored flowers adorning their home.
My aunt even planted some herbs, vegetables and fruits in her own garden.
Bryce is parking the Jeep, while I get out and take the cookies with white chocolate chunks, macadamia nuts and fresh raspberries I made for later.
I balance them and Bryce walks around to take the box out of my hands.
I kiss him on him on his nose.
”Such a gentleman,“ I tease him and smile while we walk to the front door and knock.
”Oh I can be bad,“ he says his dark eyes twinkling in the sunlight.
”You can show me later,“ I say and kiss him just as the door opens.
”Don’t you have your own place where you can make out?“
Sky says annoyed.
”Love you too cuz,“ I say and Sky gives me a hug, then he and Bryce have their weird man hug. We then enter the house and walk inside.
It’s always so sunny and warm inside. All the white and little splashes of color adding a nice touch. It always felt like a second home to me.
”Yeah yeah I’ve heard that one before,“ he says though he smiles sweetly.
”Why are you so grumpy?“ I ask walking towards the open spaced kitchen.
He sighs
”Because my sisters are saying how it’s wrong to put in cereal first and then pour milk over them,“ he says and picks up a violet bowl and munches on froot loops.
I snort and put the cookies down on the counter. Greeting Evie and Soraya with hugs and kisses to the cheek.
I lean against the counter and smile at him.
”That’s what you’re debating about?“ I ask laughing.
But when there’s deafening silence I stop laughing.
”You guys are taking this way too serious. It’s an easy answered question. You first put in the cereal and then pour the milk,“ I say hearing gasps from Soraya, Evie and even Bryce.
Sky envelops me in a big hug, milk sloshing in his bowl, and a pink fruit loop is sticking to his cheek. How did it even get there in the first place?
I point to it, he grabs it and puts in his mouth. I watch him weirded out and he just shrugs.
”See Loonsey is on my side, she totally gets it,“ he gloats.
He whistles to himself as he’s rinsing the bowl and then putting it in the dishwasher.
We all get seated at the big table. An array of food is put on the table.
Bowls of fruits. All local.
Bagels, fig jam that my aunt made herself, cream cheese mixed with chives.
Banana blueberry pancakes, with maple syrup.
”Are you trying to feed an army of people?“
Soraya is the one who answers
”No just Bryce and Sky, since those two can eat like an army of six,“ she says her voice tired.
When I look at her I’m noticing the bags under her eyes. Getting concerned I reach across the table and squeeze her hand. She squeezes my hand back.
”Oh come on don’t be mad at Looney, just because she likes my method of cereal more,” he says.
”Screw you Sky,“ she says her tone dangerously low.
Sky sighs.
”Ever since you and A…“ he starts.
”Don’t,“ she says and tenses up.
Bryce and I share a look.
Soraya nibbles on a slice of orange.
”I’m just saying you’ve been in a bad mood,“ he says carefully.
She turns to him
”How would you know? Your relationships last five minutes. If you can even call them that,“ she says
He inhales sharply.
”Neither do yours. Just look at you. If this is what being in love is like, I’ll pass thanks,“ he says
Soraya gets up and walks out.
Evie looks at Sky, her brows knitted. Her lips pursed.
”Great. Just great,“ she says
He looks at her in turn.
”Don’t give me that look. You know I didn’t mean it like that,“ he sighs and rubs a hand over his tired eyes.
Evie sips on her grapefruit juice in silence and the emotions are rolling high around the table.
I’m the first to speak up
”Did we miss something? How did a debate about cereal and milk turn into this?“ I gesture at the table.
Bryce is munching on a piece of pancake, and I squat his arm and he almost spits out the piece of pancake.
”What? I’m hungry. But I’m sorry that Sor got hurt,“ he says in a quiet voice.
Sky plays with his silver bracelet
”She got dumped, and now she’s miserable…and I just made it worse,“ he sighs again. Looking deflated.
I rub his arm gently and smile at him.
”She just needs time to get over it. It’s too much right. I think she’s too wound up now,“ I say and get up from my chair.
They all look at me.
”I’ll see if she wants some company,“ I say and Bryce looks at me and seems to be asking if I’m sure and I just nod, giving him a light kiss.
Taking the box of cookies with me and walking down the path that leads from their home right down to the beach.
I can make out her shape in her light green sweater, while she’s hugging her knees.
I smile softly.
”I knew I’d find you here,“ I say sitting down beside her.
She looks up and wipes away some tears with the back of her hand.
I smile and open the box of cookies.
She gives me a watery smile.
”I shouldn’t have stormed out like that,“ she starts
”You have a right to how you feel. Sky was out of line, but he loves you. He didn’t mean it the way it came out,“ I say reassuringly.
She leans her head onto my shoulder.
I give her a kiss on her head.
”What happened?“ I ask her.
She sighs against me and I feel her warm breath against my skin.
”Well I don’t if we talked about this…with how busy we’ve both have been lately…but I found myself feeling more and more attracted to men and women. So I started going out with this woman her name is Alisha. Everything seemed great and I wanted to take her to Hayley‘s and Ethan’s wedding as a plus one…but, “ she drifts off and takes another cookie and continues.
”She said how she’s not ready for everyone to know. I was nervous too. When I told mom and dad they weren’t exactly thrilled, but they slowly started accepting me the way I am. But I fell hard for her and then she just broke up with me out of the blue,“ she wipes another tear away.
I hug her tighter.
”I know this isn’t what you want to hear but I think you’re better off without her. I think her fear of what people would think about her took over and she got scared and ran away, metaphorically speaking,“ I say and go on
”You’re such a wonderful person Raya. You’ll see the right person will stumble along when you least expect it to. That’s how it was with me and Bryce,” I stroke her hair gently and she just lets out sobs and I can feel my own eyes water, from seeing her this hurt over someone she’s clearly still in love with.

After some time, when the sun is starting to set and the box of cookies is empty, only leaving some crumbs, we get up and dust our clothes off from any remaining sand.
That‘s when Sky joins us. I leave them be and walk back towards the house. Illuminated from the inside.
As I turn around I can see them hugging and teasing each other and I grin.
I hate it when family fights. It’s so much more sweeter when they make up.
———————————————————
Later we’re all gathered around the fire pit. I’m nestled next to Bryce, wearing his warm jacket.
The others put on light jackets too.
We’re roasting some s‘mores and drinking some wine.
Laughing and joking around. Just like old times.
Evie is just telling an embarrassing story about Sky.
Who tries to throw marshmallows at her for her to stop telling the story, but she catches the marshmallows with her hands.
”One time we were at the beach and we only saw Sky running away screaming. At first we thought he was hurt. Turns out he ran away from a turtle,“ Soraya laughs so hard.
”I was four,“ Sky says defensively.
Evie laughs so hard the sip of wine she took almost comes out of her nose.
”Oh my god that’s even worse,“ Bryce says taking a sip of his beer.
”Or remember that one time…“ Sor says
”No more embarrassing stories of Sky. That was it,“ he says
”Do you have any embarrassing stories of Luna?“ I can hear Bryce asking next to me.
Sky smiles mischievously
”Oh I have one,“ he smiles in my direction smirking.
I know instantly which one he means.
”When Luna was about 3 or 4 she stayed with gramps and grammy. She was curious and felt bored so she opened the fridge and climbed into it. She planted face first into blackberry pie, “ Sky wriggles his eyebrows in a playful matter.
I bury my face in Bryce’s neck.
He laughs and looks at me and says
”Little Lu being adventurous. So cute,“ he takes another swig of his drink and asks
”So what happened?“
Soraya is on the ground from all the laughing.
Evie answers in between laughs.
”Grandma almost had a heart attack, because she thought Looney was hurt, because she was nestled between pickles and her face was in blackberry pie. Thankfully nothing happened,“ Evie finished the story.
Everyone is laughing and I chime in after a few seconds.
”What can I say. I love me some pie. I have to say that was really really good 🥺,“ I say munching on another s’more.
My cousins are still hollering with laughter at the fridge story.
We stay like this for some time and share heart warming stories about our families. About people we met and cared for.
It’s funny sometimes you’ll meet people and they’ll surprise you by accepting you the way you are. Loving you unconditionally.
That’s the difference between people who are meant to stay in your life and who care about you, next to those who are passing by and are only your friends temporarily.
As I look at the dwindling flames and my cousins and Bryce. All I see is family and love.
That’s the way it’s supposed to be. Never was I more glad that things that happened led me to this moment right here.
