So the same visual team that worked on Prehistoric Planet also did work on Disney's CGI Lion King, and I think looking at the two shows together really highlights the flaws in the Lion King. Because the dinosaurs in PP are hyper-realistic, yes, but they're also expressive. You can see them thinking and reacting in the same way that real animals do. And yet, the Lion King's characters, despite being similarly realistic, are completely flat. Their expressions don't change. They could have done so much with body language to convey emotion. I have to wonder if Disney was just so focused on making their shot-for-shot remake that they wouldn't allow the animators to deviate, even within the normal range of animal body/facial expressions that might have really helped heighten the emotion of the story. Which feels really disrespectful to the animators, and created a bad movie experience. :/
