So the same visual team that worked on Prehistoric Planet also did work on Disney's CGI Lion King, and I think looking at the two shows together really highlights the flaws in the Lion King. Because the dinosaurs in PP are hyper-realistic, yes, but they're also expressive. You can see them thinking and reacting in the same way that real animals do. And yet, the Lion King's characters, despite being similarly realistic, are completely flat. Their expressions don't change. They could have done so much with body language to convey emotion. I have to wonder if Disney was just so focused on making their shot-for-shot remake that they wouldn't allow the animators to deviate, even within the normal range of animal body/facial expressions that might have really helped heighten the emotion of the story. Which feels really disrespectful to the animators, and created a bad movie experience. :/

Unpopular opinion but I am more than excited for the lion king photo realistic movie. A trailer just dropped and it's beautiful. Lions are one of my favorite animals and the models for the movie are super well researched in the way they move. At points in the trailer it's hard to tell that they are cgi. I'm not happy that Disney keeps making cash grabs with their old movies, I'm really not. But lion king in and of itself is very important to me, it's one of my oldest hyperfixations, and I am stoked. It's really exciting to see new blood pumped into one of my favorite franchises of all time. Thank you for coming to my TED Talk

what’s truly staggering about the CGI Lion King’s lions having zero facial expressions isn’t just that Narnia did it fine as early as 2005 but also that Disney themselves did fine with another CGI-animals heavy movie in 2016 with Jungle Book. Those animals were gorgeous! I remember being stunned not just at the realism of the CGI but at how beautifully expressive the animals were. Whichever teams did THAT gorgeous work should have gotten to do The Lion King

Hey guys, I know we’re all getting pissy about the lion king cgi characters having the emotional expression of a cracker, but let’s look on the bright side. We’re getting a Can You Feel the Love Tonight duet from Beyoncé and Gambino. I feel blessed just thinking about it.
