why do you take issue with radical feminism? keeping in mind that it’s distinct from terfism i mean
Patriarchal Misogyny: Men and Women are fundamentally different for reasons beyond one's control, and given this, each end of this strict binary are and should remain beholden to different and distinct presentations and expectations. The two are and should remain physically and socially distinct and defined despite natural expressions which indicate this is an artificial standard imposed by society. Obviously men are just naturally suited to being good leaders and women are naturally suited to be subservient caregivers. At the end of the day, it is every man's responsibility to be a good and fair caretaker to women. This is a traditional position passed down by my noble ancestors and is as such an honorable and chivalrous stance.
Progressive Feminism: Men and Women are two ends of a human spectrum but are not fundamentally different as people. We share the same potential, the same depth, the same capacity for good and evil and kindness and caring and cruelty, with broad enough overlap in physical structure and ability that dividing the two into a strict and disparate binary in all physical arenas makes very little sense. Obviously men and women are raised with seperate roles in our patriarchal society, and men at large are statistically more likely to be aggressive and women are statistically more likely to be the victim of violent and sexual crimes, but this does not reflect a strict rule that can be applied to each individual one encounters nor an immutable fact of character. At the end of the day, each individual has the capacity and responsibility to be a good and fair person. This is a movement which was developed by an oppressed class to obtain normal and unexceptional human rights already afforded to half of our existing society and is therefore a reasonable stance.
Radical Feminism: Men and Women are fundamentally different for reasons beyond one's control, and given this, each end of this strict binary are programmed to think and perform to different and distinct presentations and expectations. The two are physically and socially distinct and defined despite natural expressions which indicate this is an artificial standard imposed by society. Obviously men are wholesale trained and socialized from birth to oppress and prey on women, so it is safe to assume that and transgression is either malicious or an inescapable truth of man's nature. At the end of the day, men as a whole area statistically more likely than women to be physically or sexually violent, and so each individual man is individually more violent or sexually aggressive than any given woman. The definition for "man" and "woman" in this case includes Trans Men and is therefore a ~progressive~ stance.
Trans-Exclusionary Radical Feminism: Men and Women are fundamentally different for reasons beyond one's control, and given this, each end of this strict binary are programmed to think and perform to different and distinct presentations and expectations. The definition of "men" and "women" in this case is determined based on whether or not the individual in question ticks a certain number of boxes on the wild and varied list of primary and secondary physical expressions of human sexual dimorphism, and if you tick too many "man" boxes we add a +12 modifier to your "likelyhood of being a sexual predator in disguise" stat. I am a hero of womynkind
Even in a post-capitalist, post-consumerist world, you still need to produce goods, as a result of this, you need factories because it is more effective to have a few people making a lot of clothes in a factory than every woman being forced to sit down and spin wool all day.
The issue with factories is poor wages, unsafe working conditions and environmental impact, all of which can be fixed through things like regulatory bodies and unions, the issue is not the fact that goods are no longer all made at home
Okay we've seen the upper limits of what an astronomical budget for filmmaking can do. Let's cap the budget at $500,000 for a few years and see what film teams forced to get creative and utilize unknown actors produce.
One of the things about becoming an adult and understanding where your parents were coming from a lot better, is that sometimes you can also follow that line of thinking back to where the miscommunications happened in the first place and do better with the younger people in your own life.
Like, it can be tempting to just leave it there. You understand now why Mom would get so exasperated with asking you to set the table, it's one little chore to help the whole dinner process run smoothly, especially at those hectic final stages of a family meal where everything is getting ready to serve.
Why didn't you understand this before? Well, because you didn't appreciate the work that was going into dinner. But don't stop there! Why didn't you appreciate it? Obviously you're not just the type to never empathize or get where other people are coming from, or else you wouldn't now be going, gee I understand Mom a lot better.
Stick with it and you might find that the problem was actually that Mom would just bark at you all in the chaos to get that table set, interrupting whatever other thing you were doing. She probably did that because she was distracted by all the other stuff she was doing, but from your own perspective you were just going about your own business and got this job thrust upon you with no warning and not even any politeness, making you sullen and resentful because no one likes to be treated that way.
From your adult perspective you might see where Mom was coming from and understand that she was just harried, but if you combine that with the child's perspective of not being communicated with like a person but instead barked at like a dog, you can go, hm, yes I see. I'll ask my kids to set the table before I'm at the chaotic final stages.
Then when your kids don't set the table because they have "plenty of time" and you end up hollering at them anyway, you can go, y'know, I told you to do this half an hour ago, and when they go yes but I got distracted, you can go this has happened the last twenty times what is going on with you, and they can go I don't know, and you can figure out that they have ADHD symptoms and get them a diagnosis and medication and then realize that actually you also have ADHD symptoms and so, in fact, did Mom, and wow that's an entire family curse you've just sort of unravelled! Good job!
"Learn the fundamentals first" seems like really sound universal advice, and as a former classical musician, I can vouch for it. You will have a more solid foundation for increasing complexity if you put in the time to study in a structured way. If you don't, you'll have a lot of shit to fix later.
As a former music teacher, I can also say that "learn the fundamentals first" is the death knell for a vast percentage of beginners, especially adult learners.
I've run into this with drawing several times, where some well-meaning artist has lectured me on needing to study anatomy properly or not use shortcuts like CSP brushes. And oh, believe me, I know. I know exactly how to learn an artistic discipline in a structured way. I just...don't want to!
The thing is, I'm not aiming to be a professional artist. I want to draw my gay little anime guys. I would undoubtedly improve at art much faster if I approached every gay little anime guy drawing as a study exercise. But I would also have quit drawing a decade ago if I couldn't just let myself enjoy drawing imperfect fucked-up little guys with whatever shortcuts I needed to body myself across the finish line.
With my adult piano students, my approach was always "What's your goal?" If their goal was to learn exactly one Elton John songbook to play at parties, then...that's what we did. We'd put tape on the keys to label the notes, and just fuckin go for it. Learning exactly one Elton John songbook is a good and noble musical goal, full stop.
Some of my students needed and enjoyed a more structured approach to learning; if they wanted to be able to play classical music, then yes, scales were going to have to enter the equation at some point. And yet others would learn the Elton John songbook, catch their white whale, and realize they wanted to explore more of the ocean. The scales were still there for them to learn!
Often the choice isn't between "learn art well" and "learn art imperfectly" - the choice is between "learn art imperfectly" and "don't do art at all." To which I say, learn imperfectly! Or, what the hell, don't 'learn' art. Just do, and enjoy the doing of it.
You have official permission from your local pretentious classical music snob: fuck the fundamentals. You can always unfuck them later (but only if you want to).
I reeeeaaalllyy don't like how widespread gender realism is in supposedly feminist circles on this website. You are one step away from becoming a radfem.
"Woman" is a socially constructed category and "women" have nothing intrinsic in common, other than viewing themselves as whatever "woman" is defined as in their society, or being judged by the standards of whatever "woman" is defined as in their society. Gender is as "real" of a category as race or neurotype, which is to say, it's not objectively real at all. It's an artificial category created on the basis of perceived shared traits among certain people. The people came first, they were grouped into their artificial category later. There are no intrinsic differences between men or women or nonbinary or multigender people.
Do you actually believe gender is a social construct or are you just mindlessly repeating the phrase because it sounds cool
Watching the queer way of interacting with gender go from "Gender is a social construct that can be fun to play with but at heart is a dangerous toy because it has been used for generations to oppress and divide people." To "Everyone has a perfect crystal of true gender which you must deeply introspect to discover, and you can be wrong about its nature." Has been a disaster.
As a trans person this view I feel is deeply harmful and wrong. I do believe gender is a real and not socially constructed concept. I feel no one “gave” me my gender and people telling me my gender is a construct is insulting to who I am and how hard I worked to discover myself. Not everyone has the same experience as I do but to say as an objective that gender is made up is extremely presumptuous and rude. In my personal spiritual beliefs I feel every person’s soul comes with its own relationship to gender that isn’t given by society. Do not try to tell me my religion and my relationship with myself are made up. That’s not your place. Believe your beliefs and let others believe theirs. It harms no one.
Gender is undeniably a social construct. Your spiritual beliefs are also a social construct. Both was created and shaped by society and people's understanding of it changes constantly. A medieval Catholic's religious beliefs and experience of church were completely different from a modern Catholic's.
Children aren't born having a full understanding of gender or religion — they have to be indoctrinated into it. It might be inherent to people to seek out some kind of gender expression or spiritual belief, but the way we do it is not innate. We aren't born knowing that skirts are for girls and big trucks are for boys.
Money is also a social construct. That doesn't mean it isn't real or that it doesn't matter. It's just that people made it up and assigned meaning to it. We have no choice but to participate in it, so money is still important and meaningful to pretty much everyone in society because it defines our experiences of existing as humans right now. Still a social construct though, and has very recently changed from being exclusively bills & metal coins in your wallet/under your mattress to numbers in an app. Children have to learn how to interact with money and most people are pretty bad at it and it cases a lot of problems. The same could be said for gender.
The example that got my (really quite Catholic) mother to understand social constructs as both important and made up was days of the week.
There is no law of nature that proves it is Wednesday. Days are real - the Earth rotates, the sun rises and sets, that’s physics. Deciding to build our entire westernised lives around 1/4 of the moon’s orbit is made up. There is no law of physics that links this moment in the lunar procession to ‘Wednesday’.
And yet it really is Wednesday. Mum, you need to go to work and later your choir who practice on Wednesdays will be pissed if you skip practice because ‘Wednesday is a social construct’.
It’s also completely valid to have a favourite day of the week - Sunday for my mum since she goes to church, doesn’t work and avoids domestic chores on Sunday. And all those feelings about Sundays are completely valid in the absence of any law of nature which proves ‘it’s Sunday’.
And all those feelings about your gender…
what every fanfic writer deserves to feel comfortable saying:
I will write these characters however I want and I will write whatever I want. if you don’t like the way I write them or the things I write about, you are free to write your own fics. you are free to not read my properly tagged works. but you don’t get to tell me how to create my art. I create for myself first and foremost. I don’t create to please anybody
Nakamura’s love for octopi is adorable. He made me appreciate them more than ever 😭
You know if I found a juicer i never used before id use something like an apple or perhaps a carrot, normal juice things
all I have is natural curiosity and my sense of childlike wonder ad this big fucking sack of onions
Oh. I just thought you were euphemistically crying with joy. Not that you’d uh. Made onion juice
I made a full fucking pitcher of onion juice
This time I'm really gonna fucking do it*
*clean out the oldass canned shit that's been sitting in the pantry for literal years because sometimes there really isn't any food and so throwing anything out that's still unopened is basically the eighth deadly biblical sin but honest hand to god that shit is never getting eaten
Ruh-Roh Raggy
Hey. Hey not to make a jokepost deep but some of this shit was in my go-bag from before I moved out of my parent's house.
I first packed it up in ziplock freezer bags along with matches and a tarp n other junk in case shit went south and I needed to lay low in the woods a couple days.
And now I'm an adult, living in my own apartment, paying my own rent with my own career in a job I enjoy, with my own towels and plates and shampoo I bought because I like the smell.
Shit gets good out here
My (limited) understanding is that a yandere is like a stalker while a tsundere is like, mean to you to hide that they like you? I may have gotten the nuances wrong but I gotta say I prefer the former solely because the intentions are at least legible. When I was getting sorta stalked (not actually, he'd just watch my social media and then suddenly show up when I posted about being in different places) I Knew What The Deal Was, whereas I've apparently lost out on a lot of opportunities bc someone decided to go the negging route and I responded with disproportionate anger
Listen. Someone tells me they want me so bad they wanna cut my legs off? Clear communication, firm and open, no rhetorical tricks, I appreciate it even as I am rapidly buying a gun. Someone calls me an idiot? I'm saying things about their mom nobody in their bloodline has ever heard before. AND they like me? Well damn TALK to me then, Jesus
idk how to say this in a way that doesn't remind me of fucking terf talking points but a big problem with nodyssey is. it is. in its core. trying so hard to be a Man's movie
all of the originally complex and important female characters are stripped down to barebones useless caricatures, the colour and flourish and folklore and like. base aesthetics of greek myth and culture are shied away from in favour of the same dusty and muddy tones and undyed linens and leathers and grey metals as every badass "period" war piece regardless of the fucking millenia. the gods are fucking absent, other than a soft edgeless representation of athena later revealed to perhaps be more ptsd flashback than actual goddess. circe simply accepts to turn the men back into men after about 4 minutes, she's got no will, no substance, no personhood. it's all action and barely any myth. it's fucking bleak, in a way only achievable by a man so afraid of femininity in any way he's rid his artwork of all fantaisy and emotion and added a little misogyny to an ancient text for flavour
so yeah. you'll never catch me actually uncritically man hating. i don't think being a man is making you a bad artist but i know hating women is
Not to be all "the children have forgotten the sacred texts!" but I just saw someone refer to a ship between two people who are good friends in canon as a crackship.
Hon. No. Crackship doesn't just mean "not canon". It's difficult to imagine two people who spend significant canon time together as a crackship. Crackship is when you write Galactus getting fucked by Tony the Tiger.
Gotta say, my absolute favourite notes on this so far have been the number of people congratulating Tony on his rebound from the Grinch.
