Ch-ch-changes | Aqualana

After everything exploded on Christmas, life was surprisingly... normal. Daddy kept dating Sarabi. Attina kept being pregnant. Arista kept doing... whatever it was that was going on with Tom Harrington. And Aquata and Alana kept sharing that flat in Castle Suites with a cursed ancient sorceress (somehow, this was the most normal thing happening in the family right now).

They were cleaning up from dinner, rehashing all of this while Aquata stuck the dishes in the dishwasher and Alana wiped down the countertop. “Do you know if Tina’s got any names picked out?” Aquata asked, closing the dishwasher and reaching for the refrigerator door. “Also— do you want a beer? I’m gonna have a beer.”

So I’m on a bit of a CSI binge (the original one, Las Vegas) and they had a whole episode on transgender people (well, more of a crime committed that was centered around them), that (in my opinion) was handled quite respectively. You know when that episode aired?

November 8th, 2004. 2004!

That was over 14, FOURTEEN, years ago.

It was Season 5, Episode 8, titled Ch-Ch-Changes, if you’re interested. (It might be a bit unsavory to some, to be honest, it’s a crime show, so it’s gory and there’s a scene where a woman died during her transition surgery in a storage facility — the doctor was not licensed in any form, but I guess they were trying to help, but still kinda taking advantage of those turned down by medical professionals bc they’re “not ready” — and she was left there after she bled out)

Sure, the team comes off a little confused at first, as this whole thing is a bit new to them and say a few things very 2004 of them, but after talking to those in the community, they warm right up. Plus, right from the start, they’re all very eager to find the killers, but that’s just kinda who they are. And *spoilers* it was a bit sucky that the killer was a member of the community, but in her defense, it was an accident. *end spoilers*

I’m not saying they’re saints for doing this, but I think it’s important that it was shown on screen in 2004 and handled respectively (again, for the most part and in my opinion). If you’re into crime shows, I do recommend giving it a watch.

March 4: Who/what has inspired you to change your life?

There isn’t any one person. I’ve aspired to be kinder, because I want that in return. I’ve aspired to be more generous. I’ve aspired to take care of my body and my brain, but it’s because I’m getting older, and I don’t want to have avoidable health problems down the road. Life’s hard enough some days, ya know?

So. I only change for my own self. If you change for someone else, you’re bound to either fail or be unhappy.

Ch-Ch-Changes | Rosewater

With election season in full swing, Aquata had plenty of time now to plan her next plan of attack for the petition. It was the perfect combination: the attention was focused on other Board members, but everyone was still thinking about politics, and once the new Board was elected, Aquata could try to get to them and secure their votes before anyone else could. That was the plan, anyway.

She had a feeling Belle was feeling less enthusiastic about the petition, considering Hades had voted against it, and part of Aquata wanted to feel betrayed by that and cut her out of the project. But that was her petty side. Her logical side knew that having Belle as an ally here could be really useful, both from a political standpoint and a practical standpoint. She was a lawyer, after all. Aquata could really use her input on the changes to the petition that would get it through.

“Your family’s Halloween costumes were really cute,” Aquata commented as the server brought their tea at Hatter’s. Hey, a little small talk and buttering up couldn’t hurt, even if it wasn’t really Aquata’s strong suit. “Must have taken a lot of coordination.”
