Stella had meant to wander over to the Marine Research Center and see what was going on there. Unfortunately, per usual, she had gotten a little lost and ended up somewhere completely different in town. It wasn’t like it was a very big human settlement, but something about land made her sense of direction get all messed up. Or maybe it was just being somewhere new besides her ocean. Having this much freedom to roam around was still so new and exciting, and she found it easy to get distracted and end up in entirely the wrong place.
Without thinking about it too hard, Stella picked up a pinecone off the ground and idly examined its patterning. Her eyes widened. How interesting! She picked up another pinecone, and compared the two to see how they compared and differed. Of course she had seen pinecones before, but never had she actually analyzed them so closely. Glancing up, she hadn’t realized that someone else was nearby. Stella had absolutely no idea who this was or what they wanted, but she knew that it was important to be nice. “Oh, uhm. Did you want one of these? You can have this one, if you like.” Tentatively, Stella held out the one in her left hand. “I’m sure there are plenty to go around. Unless I’m not supposed to pick up any of these? I- I didn’t see any signs that said I wasn’t allowed but- I can put them back if I need to.”
Chapter One
Smoke & Arrows
Pain.
Before I even opened my eyes, there was pain shooting through my limbs, down my spine. As if lightning shot through them. Quietly groaning, I rolled over. On the nightstand, a small vial. A glowing yellow elixir.
Sitting up, I flicked the cap off the vial, and let the bitter liquid hit the back of my throat.
Standing, I tossed the vial into the same basket the cap had been flicked into. Massaging the back of my neck. Stretching as I approached the window, pulling the curtains back— wincing at the bright golden light that poured through.
Propping open the window, I sat on the bench beside it, collecting my pipe. Overlooking the city as the sun peeked over the horizon. Waiting for the elixir to do its magic— slowly, ever so slowly, the storm inside was dulled. Whether by the elixir, or the flower in my bowl, I couldn’t tell.
But it was enough to start the day.
My right hand glowed blue as it passed over my joints, taking care to mitigate swelling and inflammation. Finally resting over my stomach. The glow faded back into the black ink in my skin.
Blowing another cloud out the window, I let my eyes close. Enjoying the peace.
The peace was broken by a snap in the air, and an arrow in my bedpost.
My heart slams into my ribs- the arrow was still shaking, “Mother fuck—“ glancing out the window someone just shot through wasn’t exactly a great idea, but after recognizing the red feathers at its tail, I couldn’t help but feel a spike in annoyance.
At the guard’s tower, by the gate, I spotted the responsible party. Even from so far away, I could see that stupid grin on his face— doubled over laughing, no doubt at my reaction.
Twisting my left hand, a flash of colors erupted, twisting into a circle. With a simple gesture, the center went black, and a portal emerged. Suddenly, the man on the tower dropped, falling through the portal, and dropping into my room with a loud clunk.
Yet still, Archer laughed.
“I’m sorry, I’m sorry—“ he wheezed.
“Doesn’t seem like it, do you know how much trouble you can get into, shooting at a member of the royal family?” Deadpan, I watched as he rolled onto his back, and sat up. The portal disappearing.
“Right, yes, I’m so sorry your highness. Forgive me.” He shifted onto his knee, a makeshift bow.
Rolling my eyes, I took another hit. “Shut up, come here.”
With laughter on his lips, he made his way over, picking my legs up and sitting under them. “Was that necessary?” I asked, waving the pipe towards the arrow lodged in my bedpost.
“No, but it caught your attention, didn’t it?” He grabbed my smoke box off the window sill, prepping to reload the pipe.
“Nearly gave me a heart attack, more like.” With a wave of my hand, the bowl cleared of ash— passing it to him.
“I’m sorry, love.” Even though the smile on his face didn’t fade, his eyes were sincere. Affectionately squeezing my knee. “How are you feeling today? Are you ready for your audience with your father?”
“More than ready.”
“Do you think he’ll allow the hunt?”
“When I tell him of the rumors we’ve been hearing, he should.” Leaning back, I admired his face. Watching his bottle-green eyes narrow as he focused. His hair was a mess, dirt smudged on his cheek… and there was a tiny cut that started scabbing over.
“I would hope so,” he used his nail to pack the flower down into the bowl, “if cursed beasts are roaming around, it’s best to get on it early.”
Humming an affirming noise, my gaze drifted away— out over the city. The morning market was far off in the distance, the royal council members arriving one-by-one through the gate, making the long distance to the stairs. White marble adorned with gold fixtures. Pristine. The tall walls at the entrance, as well as the doors, held intricately designed stained glass pieces. From a distance, you couldn’t see the tiny pieces— only the bright colors.
Squeezing my leg, he caught my attention again, passing the prepared pipe back to me. Setting the box aside and collecting the lighter.
Lighting it for me, I took a long drag. Sitting up and leaning forward, my free hand cupped his cheek over the cut; our lips meeting as I shared the breath with him.
When I pulled away, the cut had disappeared. “Did you get hurt anywhere else?” I scanned his body.
“Hm? No, just a few bumps and bruises. We did our sparring today. Josh gave me that.”
My thumb, smoothing over where the cut had been, paused in its movement. Though my face stayed a careful neutral, Archer raised an eyebrow. “You two still not on speaking terms?”
“Of course not.”
“You know, he and Michael seem to be getting along again. Why can’t you forgive him? It was Michael who got hurt.”
Taking another slow drag, I blew the smoke out the window, pulling my legs from his lap so I could stand.
“Not only did he out Michael,” I started, handing him the pipe, stretching, “in that process, threw me under the bus and forced me to break doctor-patient confidentiality. Besides, you remember what he did on the last expedition. That is an entire town, a whole population of people, gone.”
Snow. Fire. Screaming. Blood.
“… I can’t look at him the same way anymore.”
Archer quietly puffed on the pipe, nodding slowly. “His brutal ways haven’t changed much, from what I’ve been hearing.”
“What do you mean by that?”
Archer shrugged, “Some of the guys have been talking about his most recent… raids.” His eyebrows pulled together, his nose twitching, looking anywhere but me.
I watched him for a moment, pacing across the room to where my clothes were laid out.
“Let's just say he’s been… indiscriminate, in his decimation. There’s a reason he’s been the front line in the recent clashes. He’s been turning just for the fun of it.”
Running my fingers through my hair, I smoothed it back— the longest strands barely passing my ears, sort on the sides and back. My mind briefly wandered to my twin— the question of whether or not we looked the same anymore stewing.
As if reading my mind, Archer spoke softly. “His hair has gone completely black. He stays pretty covered up, though. I don’t know if anything else has stuck.”
A supposed gift we were each born with; the ability to transform into a creature four times our size. Putting on bulk, bones breaking, growing, and reshaping— it was an anguishing, painful ordeal. While its many advantages, both in magical boost and physical power, left many to envy the ability, the side effects of such magic were permanent and painful.
After repeated, prolonged transformations, it was common for things to slowly stop changing back.
“Silver?” Archer had closed the window and put away the pipe. “Look, maybe he’s been lucky and that’s all that—“
“It’s his decision whether or not to use his gift, no matter my feelings on it.” I tugged my shirt over my head, folding it and draping it over the arm of a chair, along with my pants.
My uniform was simple. All-black, as was tradition. An undershirt, tight but flexible pants, then the long-sleeved overshirt that went down to my knees, two slits at either side coming to my hips.
“Fair enough.”
Archer had walked around the bed, sitting on the edge closest to me. Watching.
Stepping into my boots, I barely contained a grimace at the thought of having to bend over to yank at the laces into place.
“Here—“ He slid off the bed, taking two steps, and kneeling in front of me, he brought my boot onto his knee. Starting at the toe, he began pulling the laces into place. “Tight enough?”
“Yes.”
Knotting it, he moved on to the next boot. As he did, I reached for my gloves. A new pair, after my old ones had worn down from constant use. When I looked down at him again, our eyes met.
“You know—“
“Don’t even. We will have more than enough time on this hunting trip, but getting the hunting trip means making it to my audience with the king on time. Now is not the time for distractions.” I couldn’t help but smile back at the blinding grin he gave me.
“Fair enough.” With both my feet back on the ground, Archer stood chest-to-chest with me. Well, as close to it as he could, being a head shorter than me. “Oh, I’ve got something for you—“
He unbuttoned one of the brown pockets on his belt, pulling free something with a metallic chink sound.
A flat silver chain, engraved with sigils— a small blue gem, roughly as big as the tip of my pinky finger, the droplet-shaped gem dangled, held to the chain by a complex entanglement of wire.
It almost seemed to glow.
“Oh, wow. What—“
“I found it on an expedition— well, okay, I found the jewel on an expedition. Do you remember that blue dragon I hunted down? From the coast? It had a shit ton of jewels in its hoard. Made the chain myself. They’re protective wards, I figured it would help since you’ve always got a hand in someone’s injury, you can focus more on that than watching your back.”
I recalled the stories he told of the journey— for as many travels we have been on together, there were more where we had been separated. During this, I was on the other side of the city, helping fight a new disease that was ripping through the east sect.
“It’s— it’s stunning. Did you make this? Yourself?” He’s crafty with metal; though it came as no surprise, seeing as his family had a long history as blacksmiths.
“On my last few visits home. I couldn’t stop thinking about you.”
Leaning in, I planted a kiss on his lips. His free hand came up to cup the back of my neck, rising a little to meet me. Knocking our foreheads together gently, my horns meeting his skin.
“I love you.” I murmured, “Thank you, it’s beautiful.”
“Here, turn around.” He bumped our noses together, gently nudging my shoulder. I obliged, turning on my heel. Not a moment later, I could feel the metal around my neck; the sound of the clasp snapping into place. “There.”
A kiss between my shoulders. I turned back around, cupping his face. My thumbs stroking his cheeks affectionately, “Thank you.”
“Anything for you, my love.” He turned to kiss my palm— warm, even through the leather.
For a moment, we stayed like that.
A quiet sigh escaped my lips when I heard the bell tower toll. “We should get going soon, do you want to get cleaned up first?” I gently touched the smudge of dirt on his forehead.
“Yeah, just give me five minutes and I’ll be ready to go.” He bounced up to give me a peck on the cheek, before slipping away, disappearing into the bathroom.
Touching the jewel, I watched after him, following not far behind. Tucking the chain into my shirt— keeping it close to my heart.
Can you give us an introduction of the RO???
Honestly, I could give you a six page essay on each of the ROs but I don’t want to spoil too much as a lot of info may or may not be revealed depending on your relationship with each character. So far I have six main ROs, three female and three male, as well as one more “hidden” RO that I’m probably going to make flex (meaning their gender changes depending on the MCs sexuality). There’s a possibility that some of the main ROs could change to be flex as well, but some of them have stories that closely tie in with their gender identities, so some are definitely more set in stone than others. All ROs are attracted to any gender however, so no need to worry about getting locked out of a romance because of your gender :)
But a quick intro to the ROs (in alphabetical order)! I’m not going to include physical descriptions because you’ll be getting in depth ones after the prologue and I don’t want to repeat myself. (All names are their codenames as their real identities may or may not be revealed to MC depending on choices made in game)
Angel is the youngest member of the Unit. She’s soft spoken but quite assertive when she speaks up. Her power at first glance are wings that resemble an angel, which is obviously where she got the name from. She’s a cancer and her favorite color is blue.
Hades is the oldest member of the Unit. He can be snide and stand-offish at first, but is obsessively protective of his team. His power isn’t anything visible. He’s a scorpio and doesn’t claim to have a favorite color, but honestly with all the black he wears that’s probably his favorite.
Lynx isn’t the oldest member of the Unit but she certainly acts like it. There’s something threatening about her prescience that you can’t shake no matter what, despite how kind she seems to be. She’s thin and agile with patches of spotted fur on the parts of her arms that are visible. She’s a virgo and her favorite color is green.
Minotaur is the second oldest member of the Unit and good friends with Hades. Despite the fact that he’s over six foot, he seems to take up very little space in a crowded room. He has horns that grow from his temples and curve backwards to point behind his head. He’s a libra and his favorite color is orange.
Silver is the “middle child” of the Unit, and despite the saying that the middle child is always forgotten he is the leader of the unit. “Daddy’s money”, everyone says, but his charisma could have gotten him in a position of leadership even without his dad being on the board of the hero organization that employs the Unit. Due to his popularity as the leader of the unit, most people know about his power, which is to read minds once he makes eye contact. He is an aquarius and his favorite color is blue.
And last but certainly not least there is V, the second youngest member of the Unit. She’s kind enough but also quite loud and stubborn, as well as a big participant of local protests. Her ability to make hardlight shields from nothing comes in quite handy, even when she just needs a stepping stool to reach the top shelf. She is a sagittarius and, unlike Hades, when she says she doesn’t have a favorite color it’s because she genuinely cannot pick one.
Hello, you draw these characters absolutely wonderfully, could you give us tutorials for some of them? :0
Okay let's start :3
In general, first I draw a sketch of the pose (I don't do it neatly like other artists, but it's so convenient for me. But you can do it however you like). Then on top of it the character (I chose Silver because I adore him XD)
Then I make a line and colour the character
But I do each colour on a separate layer (because it is convenient for me to do so)
When I'm done with this I start making shadows. First, I make them light with a Water Color brush.
Then I start adding the rest of the shadows, but darker. And where necessary, I paint something like "light shadows" (I don't know what it's called :p)
Finally, I add some more "light shadows" on top of all the details, highlights and use a Luminosity (Addition) and Overlay wherever I want. Also I change the colours of the line.
Also, if you want, you can add a background, as I did
I'm not very good at tutorials, but hope this will be helpful for you^^; (And sorry for my bad english)
Here is a Brillig Bandersnatch, come to flop onto Silver.
“Insomnia misses you,” she tells him, laying her head on his shoulder. “You’re always here now, or going out in the field. You don’t move like you used to.”
