The fight with the Flying Fish Riders shares kind of the same function as the Davy Back Fight prior to Water 7. It gets to show off the Straw Hats at their best and most powerful as they work together to take on a negligible threat while setting up the themes for the next big arc. It props the crew up as a force to be reckoned with, right before cutting them down at the knees once they reach Sabaody.
