Per an SBS, Hatchi became friends with Rayleigh after saving his life from drowning in a shipwreck (which is itself wild given how as an old man Rayleigh was able to swim to Amazon Lily. My money was on him being drunk) and with that in mind it's interesting to see how the course of his life has changed over time. While he was always friendly with humans and a bit of a doofus during Arlong Park, it really goes to show how he got swept up with Arlong's ambition and did a lot of things that would have otherwise been against his nature.
