I have it bad, the bargain-hunting gene (specifically, coupon-clipping paternally and sale-stalking/strategic returnery naternally); I have it really bad. And I’m alone tonight, my husband is out, and I thought why not cook myself something that only I like? And it just so happened that tail-on prawns were half-off at the Hanamasa.
I was excited for myself, and for the nice bottle of wine I found real cheap. The nice bottle of ¥400 wine. Which, it turned out, while I got to the register with several people behind me, was actually a ¥1400 bottle of wine.
Which is not an apocalypse. If I was invited to a party, I’d spend at least that. But for me? At home alone in my apartment, watching Hannibal? And I wasn’t even looking to drink. I had a bag of lemons and a new secondhand microplane grater. I was gonna use it for shrimp linguine.
Anyway. Needless to say. I am drunk, currently. The shrimp are incredible. The wine is seriously Not Bad. The prices, it turn out, can even out when you count the deal I got on the shrimp. Right? Right. So I am now eating speculoos out of the jar with my index finger, and I mean, this is my ignorance tax, right? 2015 was three years ago and it was the only non-Chardonnay at Hanamasa, and I might’ve guessed... but I’m slightly glad I didn’t.
