Song Review: The Devil Makes Three - “Deep Down”

Deep down, Sound Bites really likes the Devil Makes Three.

But “Deep Down,” with its repetitive melody and lyrics, is just not a good song. Even live - the band performed the Chains Are Broken track recently in the Relix studios - the tune is DOA.

It’s a feat to repeat yourself in 150 seconds, but the trio does it a number of times in the song, which at 2.5 minutes is still too long.

Song Review: The Devil Makes Three - “Pray for Rain”

The Devil Makes Three slash and burn their way through “Pray for Rain,” clangy chords and a relentlessly pounding drum pushing things along for four interminable minutes.

This third single from Chains are Broken (Aug. 24) continues - and builds upon - the band’s disappointing stylistic shift from a quirky, punky purveyor of Americana to just another mainstream group. It’s as if the Devil Makes Three are aiming for the lowest common denominator - and it’s not becoming in the slightest.
