I watched the first episode of the new anime about a smoking cat Yani Neko. It does a great job portraying a character struggling with addiction and depression, and it’s a fantastic motivator to finally get around to cleaning the house. A quick sketch based on an old meme (original attached).

Professional envy picked the wrong trash cat. 🚬🐈‍⬛ In 2023, Yani Neko’s creators were hit by fake accounts spreading false sexual-crime allegations and contacting business partners. Young Magazine said lawyers were involved.

Japanese reporting later linked the campaign to Chicchi Yukinaga, writer of Satsudou. It reported a handwriting match, a private confession, and a ¥1 million settlement offer. He denied the core claims, and Kodansha did not confirm them.

One suspected motive was jealousy: Yani Neko placed 12th in the Next Manga Awards while Satsudou did not place. The timing fits, but motive and guilt were never proven in court. No public judgment or confirmed legal punishment followed.

Satsudou went on hiatus. In March 2024, Young Magazine announced Yukinaga’s death and ended the series; the cause was not disclosed. His death is not “karma,” and there is no evidence tying it to the scandal.

Meanwhile, the chainsmoking disaster-cat kept going: more manga, a TV anime, and Netflix streaming. Yani didn’t win because someone died. She won because the smear failed, the work survived, and the filthy cat refused to disappear. 🚬😼
