While it's perfectly understandable for Ed to automatically know he can use alchemy without a circle in the manga/09 series after going through the Gate, I have to admit I'm pretty fond of the 03 series setting the story up so that he's only made aware of this information later on.

And him being unaware of his talent isn't solely depicted by his continued use of a transmutation circle; he also isn't transmuting his arm into a weapon yet, so he's shown using other means to fight back (he gets a bit more physical with Bald and ends up crushing the guy's automail instead of simply incapacitating it with his blade like he does in the manga).

The 03 series also makes his first use of clap alchemy an unintentional action rather than him testing the waters out post-surgery. And, of course, without having an immediate understanding of his newfound talent, he couldn't figure out how to do it again and cited it as a total coincidence until it happened for the second time during his State Alchemist exam.

We never get to see when or how he determines that his ability to use alchemy without a circle was a result of him committing the taboo, but we know he figured it out before speaking with Izumi considering how he reacts with essentially no shock when she brings it up, as well as his later recount of his experience in the Gate.

The military’s favourite menace

I decided to bring to life an AU I had in mind: the adults from FMA as children. It was a lot of fun drawing them this way, so who knows, maybe I'll bring more characters like this.

Roy and Hughes (all stripe and star patterns are in accordance with the respective characters' military uniforms)

Bradley and Greed (Bradley uses a baseball bat because children can't use sharp swords)

Lust and Envy

Scar and Kimblee

Riza and Havoc

Miles and Olivier (I already had in mind that she would use a tennis player uniform, simply for aesthetic reasons. Miles wears a hockey player's uniform because it's a sport played on ice, and Briggs is surrounded by snow)
