Challenge 117: Prehistoric: Struthiomimus
When my brother and I were kids, we consumed a LOT of dinosaur material-- movies, books, toys, you name it. Given that we were 90s kids, a lot of that dinosaur material was from the 1980s, and is now a weird, foggy memory that we can’t quite place. (Prehistoric in another way, entirely!)
I consider myself pretty adept at being able to dig up random stuff on the internet, without having a source name or anything (I’m sure my Google history of keyword phrase combos would be LOL-inducing), so I decided recently to give it a go with some of our beloved dinosaur memories.
I was able to find a set of stickers from 1985 that were plastered all over our fridge for years (thanks, Etsy.) I also discovered an old computer game that provided many hours of entertainment, education, and full system crashes in the late 90s (any other 3d Dinosaur Adventure fans out there?)
But most importantly, I unearthed one of our favorite, long-forgotten VHS rentals: Dinosaur! A documentary hosted by Christopher Reeve, of all people. It had the most incredible stop-motion animation, creating rich imagery I never forgot, all these years later, without having physically viewed it in decades. Upon finding this, I learned it was the work of Phil Tippett, and it also won him an Emmy for special effects, no less. No wonder it stuck with us.
(An unimportant but interesting note is that there were a ton of clips from Dinosaur! inside of 3D Dinosaur Adventure. Gotta wonder if that was done legally... lolz)
Showing my brother this blessed Youtube discovery was probably the best part about it-- his reaction to all of the scenes that had stuck with me, too, through life. “OHHHH MANNN!! I REMEMBER THIS! HE’S GONNA STEAL THE EGG NOW.” Priceless.
So anyway, all of that is to explain why I drew this super random Struthiomimus eating eggs-- it was one of the scenes from Dinosaur! that were vividly in my memory, down to the color of the egg yolk.
