How serendipitous that this article was published today in the Times' Education Life section. It's the story of a Brown alumna who didn't learn much of anything despite her risk-averse "success" with grades and admission to an Ivy League school. It pretty well encapsulates everything the Challenge Success folks (in town for their first-ever workshop outside Palo Alto and Stanford) had been trying to convey all weekend.

You can't read this piece without harkening back to Howard Gardner, just a few nights ago, talking about the cheating scandal at Harvard. He said he asked one of the students who was caught about why she did it. She reflected, instead, on another Harvard class in which the professor learned each of the 100 students' names and commented individually on their papers. "No one would have ever cheated in that class," she said.

Or thinking back to Paul Tough: What if the secret to success is failure? (Angela Duckworth will be talking more about that on Nov. 29 at North Shore Country Day.)

Or wondering if she had faced as much rejection as Brene Brown had, would she have had the resilience or courage to keep going? 

So much wisdom to draw from. Now, if we can just apply some of it to our own lives we will all come out okay.

This is such a cool story, $100 is significant to most people, imagine picking one random person and giving it to them? I really love this idea.

$100 Challenge Success

 We did it! Remember when I told you about the $100 Challenge here?

Well shortly after Christmas we found the perfect person to give our $100 to! Let me tell you, it was SO fun! We went out for some drinks and to watch the hockey game. We were just about the only ones in our section, and then the last ones at the restaurant before it closed. Our waitress was SO nice, she didn't mind at all and kept telling us to take our time even though we knew she would be able to get ready to head home as soon as we left. (We stayed because it was the Canada Jr. game...where they lost). We overheard the waitress talking to her colleagues about how she was staying late because she was trying to make more money to recover after Christmas and we looked at each other and were like "This is it." We finished up as the restaurant was closing and went to pay our bill Jetty tried to kind of hide from her as he did it so we could scurry out. We almost made it to the door when we heard "Holy #%&*, that's a LOT," we turned and smiled and gave her a thumbs up so she knew it wasn't a mistake and she yelled "Thank You!" I giggled all the way to the car. Jetty was laughing too. We will definitely do it again, at least annually.
