one of my favourite memories involves this song.
i was sixteen years old and in chamber singers at my high school. there were 16 of us in total and we were rehearsing this piece for an upcoming concert. though we were singing the notes correctly, our vocal director insisted that something was missing â that we didnât feel the piece. we didnât understand it. i knew she was right. when we sang there was no soul behind it. we were like robots. so one day we came bustling into class and she stood at the front of the classroom and put her fingers to her lips indicating that we all should stop talking. she then took out the sheet music for this piece and held it up to show us that this is what we we would be working on. then she started walking toward the exit and motioned for us to follow her. and we did. we followed her into the green room in the auditorium. it was a small room, but big enough to fit all of us comfortably. she arranged us in a circle, and mixed us so we were not standing next to our own voice type. mind you, this all happened in silence. not one word had been spoken. once we were all arranged, she held up the piece one more time and grabbed the hands of the people next to her. so i looked down and held the hands of the people next to me. with our hands held, we formed a circle. she nodded, then turned around and shut off the lights. the room was pitch black and it was a shock to us, but even still, no one said a word. then all of a sudden, we heard her take in a deep breath, and somehow we all knew to begin the piece. and we sang. i cannot describe the feeling of finally understanding, not only understanding but physically touching someone else going through exactly what you are. the music filled the room and being in the dark, not seeing our conductor was one of the most, if not the most raw, organic musical experiences in my life. we were listening to each other, breathing together, feeling together. it was beautiful. i remember having the chills and squeezing the hands of those next to me. when it was over, she turned on the lights to reveal tears in everyones eyes. she finally spoke and said âthat was perfect.â
