the copper series: the cobalt connection

cobalt in the zambian copperbelt is not incidental. cobaltiferous pyrite, carrollite, linnaeite — they form in the same reducing chemical environment as the copper sulphides, in the same geological horizons, in the same ore bodies. the mines that produce copper from the katangan basin sedimentary sequences produce cobalt from the same rock.

the chambishi metals plant — operated by CNMC — processes cobalt-bearing residues and concentrates from multiple sources across the copperbelt into cobalt metal and cobalt compounds for the international market. zambia produces approximately 3,000 to 5,000 tonnes of refined cobalt per year — the world's second largest cobalt producer after the DRC, which dominates global production at approximately 70 percent of world supply.

why this matters with particular urgency in 2026.

a lithium-ion battery in an electric vehicle contains cobalt as a critical component of the cathode material. cobalt content per battery has been declining as manufacturers develop higher-nickel, lower-cobalt formulations. but even at reduced cobalt content, 30 to 40 million EVs per year by 2030 represents enormous demand that the supply side cannot easily match.

the DRC's dominance — approximately 70 percent of global mine production — creates exactly the supply chain concentration that the american minerals security partnership, the EU critical raw materials act, and battery manufacturers are actively trying to diversify away from. the child labour documented at DRC artisanal cobalt sites has created powerful consumer pressure on EV manufacturers to demonstrate that the cobalt in their products is responsibly sourced.

zambia's cobalt: produced as a by-product of industrial copper mining. regulated. documented supply chain. without the artisanal child labour issues that characterise DRC artisanal cobalt. positioned as exactly the ethical, traceable, responsibly sourced cobalt that EV manufacturers and battery producers are willing to pay a premium for.

the cobalt story is the copper story's most important companion.

and it points directly to the next series — the cobalt series — that this content will begin when the copper series draws fully to its close.

The copper series: zambia and china

China accounts for approximately 55 to 60 percent of global refined copper demand. the copper price on the london metal exchange is, in practical terms, primarily a function of chinese demand. zambia's fiscal position — its government revenues, its ability to service debt, its exchange rate — moves in direct correlation with chinese copper demand. this is not a policy choice. it is a structural reality of the global commodity economy.

china is also the world's largest processor of copper. more than half of the world's refined copper cathode — including a significant portion of zambia's production — travels to china, where it is drawn into rod and wire, rolled into sheet, alloyed, and manufactured into the cables, motors, transformers, and components that china's economy uses and exports to the world. the value addition gap the series identified in its first post — between what copper is worth as cathode and what it is worth as wire or component — is, in large part, a gap between what zambia produces and what china does with it.

chinese investment in zambia's copper sector is substantial and long-standing.

CNMC — china nonferrous metal mining group — operates chambishi copper mine, chambishi metals cobalt plant, and luanshya copper mine, among other assets. the non-ferrous china africa smelter at chambishi is chinese-funded and chinese-operated. chinese companies have invested in exploration, in mining equipment, in mine infrastructure, and in commercial trade of zambian copper cathode at a scale that makes china the dominant foreign presence in the copperbelt's mining economy.

this investment has built real things. idle mines restarted. infrastructure constructed. employment created. tax revenues generated. these are not small contributions.

but the relationship requires honest examination.

the terms question. not all chinese investment in zambia's copper sector has been on terms that maximise zambia's benefit. some early concession arrangements — concluded in the early 2000s when zambia's negotiating position was weak and its need for investment was urgent — gave chinese operators advantages in taxation, environmental standards, and local content requirements that more recent agreements have sought to renegotiate.

the local content question. chinese mining operations in zambia have at various points been criticised for importing chinese labour, equipment, and management at levels that reduce local employment and skills transfer. the criticism is documented and legitimate.

the strategic question. zambia's dependence on china as both primary market for its copper and primary foreign investor creates a concentration of exposure that any prudent economic manager would seek to diversify. developing alternative market relationships — with the EU through the critical raw materials act, with the US through the minerals security partnership, with japanese and south korean battery manufacturers — is not anti-china policy. it is sound economic risk management.

china has been, and will continue to be, a fundamental part of zambia's copper story. the relationship is too deep and too structurally embedded to be wished away. what zambia needs is the leverage, the institutional capacity, and the diversified market relationships that allow the china relationship to be managed as a partnership of mutual benefit rather than as a dependency the stronger party can exploit.

that is the honest account. 🟠

Dejavu: 9 miners burnt Chambishi By JOHN SAKALA Nine miners for Yellowstripe Resources Limited in Chambishi are nursing burns after the smelting furnace exploded on them. This is not the first time Chambishi has recorded explosion of the smelting furnace. Sources at the plant have told The Independent Observer that the miners were smelting scrap metal when the furnace burst, its contents splashing on the miners that were at the plant. Outgoing Kalulushi District Commissioner Kenny Siachisumo has confirmed the development in an interview. Mr Siachisumo said the company experienced an explosion around 19:00 hours yestersay which injured the workers. He said the workers were rushed to Royal Medical Centre in Kitwe where they are currently receiving treatment. “The accident is regrettable and we urge the company to put in place measures which will ensure the workers are protected from similar occurrences,” he said. A check at Royal Medical Centre in Kitwe’s Parkland residential area found only two accident victims admitted to the facility. Hospital Medical Officer Boltaboev Shovkat said the nine patients were received at the centre. Dr Shovkat said all the nine workers that were taken to the centre had burns and were complaining of pain. “It was around 19:20 hours when we received a few patients. All of them were in one room and they all had burns,” he said. Dr Shovkat said all the nine were examined and had superficial burns on their bodies. He said seven of the patients were treated and discharged because they had two or less than two per cent of burns. The Independent Observer will keep informed on any new development on the story.
