Sexually transmitted diseases can be caused by viruses, bacteria, protozoans, and even animals. Bacterial vaginosis and chancroid are both infections caused by bacteria, which means that they can be treated with antibiotics. While bacterial vaginosis only affects people with vaginas, chancroid disproportionately affects people with penises. You can seek diagnosis and treatment for bacterial vaginosis and chancroid at a Planned Parenthood health center, as well as health clinics, private health-care providers, and health departments.

Chancroid
Chancroid is a type of bacteria that is spread through sexual contact. It's pretty rare, though it is more common on penises than vulvas. It causes open sores on the penis, rectum and vulva around the opening of the vagina. They're usually painful and produce pus. They usually appear about 4-10 days after infection. To diagnose a doctor will look at the discharge produced by the sores under a microscope. It's commonly confused with herpes and syphilis. Chancroid, like most other STIs caused by bacteria, is easily treated with antibiotics. Just be sure to take as directed!
Chancroid, like herpes and HPV, is spread through skin to skin contact. This can include genital contact, or touching the sores. Using barrier methods, refraining from sex while you have chancroid, and not touching the sores and washing your hands after touching them can help prevent spreading it. Having Chancroid can up your risks of HIV so be very careful while you have the bacteria in your system.
