Good morning, everyone! I hope you are having a nice morning so far. :) I am feeling a bit better this morning, thanks to those of you who reached out, it means a lot! On another note, can you guys believe that we’re already almost halfway through May?? I have no idea what’s going on with time lately, and I’m not sure how I feel about it... How are you guys all doing so far this year?

How did we know when behavior was inappropriate? We just did. Any woman over the age of fourteen probably did. Believe it or not, we didn't want to be offended. We weren't sitting around twiddling our thumbs waiting for someone to show up and offend us so that we would have something to do that day. In fact, we made dozens of excuses not to be. We gave the benefit of the doubt. We took a man's comment about the way our high heels made our calves look as well intentioned. We understood the desire for us to draw a line in the sand--this was okay, this was not okay. No such line existed, or at least not one that we could paint. But trust that by the time we were working, our meters had been tested dozens of times over. We were experts in our field.

Book of the Month: This Is Not the End by Chandler Baker

I’m doing this a few days early, since the end of the month is on a Thursday, so forgive me! I have to say, I didn’t like any of Baker’s Teen novels (Hyde, Frankenstein, etc) but this had such a unique premise that I couldn’t pass it up and I’m so glad I didn’t! This is set in a world where on a person’s eighteenth birthday, they can choose to resurrect someone from the dead. Lake’s plan was to always try and resurrect her brother- even though he isn’t dead yet. But a few weeks before Lake’s birthday, the unthinkable happens. She and her boyfriend and her best friend end up in a car accident that leaves both of them dead. Now she’s forced to choose between the three of them, and as she goes on a journey to figure out the answer to what she’s supposed to do, she discovers that things weren’t quite as perfect as she thought they were. With less than a month to go, Lake must decide who she wants to save- and who she can continue a life without. I loved everything about this and I thought I would be angry with the ending but I was pretty content with it. I thought it was a beautiful and heartbreaking commentary on what we would choose to do when we have too many choices thrust at us and what we do with the life we’re given and also what happens when we don’t know the people closest to us in the ways we think we do. I think I was surprised by every small twist in this book, and that doesn’t happen often. I liked that it flipped between the present and past, so that you could really see the struggle of what Lake was facing and why she went down the path that she did and the decisions that she made along the way. If you’re looking for something different to read, something that will break your heart, reel you in, but leave you a little hopeful, choose this book. Baker is also the author of the High School Horror Story series, Alive, and Whisper Network. Happy reading!

Only a few this month, but they’re all good ones!  No questionable are-they-aren’t-they this time.

Teen Phantom by Chandler Baker is part of a series of childrens’/young adult books that retell classic horror stories in a modern high school setting, this time taking on the Phantom tale.  It looks like it’s a genderswap, with a male character named Chris as the hapless love interest and a female character named Lena fixating on him from the shadows.

Embrace the Shadows by Patti Chiappa is the fourth (and final?) book in their Phantom’s Lullaby series, coming out rapid-fire with the previous two installments after a long pause after the first.  The story focuses on the Phantom’s descendants, and appears to be heading into full-on theology, with the Devil and various angels appearing as characters and literal trips to Hell in order to rescue the damned.

All Things Phantom of the Opera by Patti Chiappa is a sort of potluck book - the description says it includes a variety of fiction and nonfiction based on the story, including poetry, recipes, art, and biographies for actors in the Lloyd Webber musical version, much like the old-timey ‘zines we used to see in the 80s and 90s.  I’m a little concerned about fanart copyright, but it might be that all the artwork Chiappa mentions is their own.

The Hero Beneath the Villain’s Mask by Michelle Rodriguez is yet another novel from one of our most prolific Phantom authors!  As the sexy cover art should clue you in, it’s an Erik and Christine romance, focusing on the issues of Erik’s questionable morality and whether he can be redeemed enough to be a true love interest for Christine.
