Taking levels with an optical system in the old days , you had to be organised and record everything important before you leave the sight. Optical readings have to be read accurately and double checked. If you were too far away from the staff you had to create a change point so you can be closer and take a more accurate reading.
If you had to do a few change points it was necessary to close the loop and taking the last reading on your starting point .
If the calculated error was too high you had to redo the whole surveying work so that you can have more confidence in your level work.
