Part of something new
So since it’s my birthday today, I wanted to give something to you too. I wrote this story this week for school and planned on keeping it for when I hadn’t been posting for a while. But here it is! I hope you like it! TW: Mention of killing/death Villain’s old Sidekick took a deep sigh as they walked further into the new base. The new house that became their home a few days ago. The house of the new group they joined after they left Villain. Sidekick had loved Villain and they would have done anything for them. But of course, they were just a kid. One that got badly hurt in a fight and sent away by their former partner. Villain cared for them, Sidekick knew, but it broke their heart that Villain was keeping them away, saying that it would be safer and therefore better for Sidekick, not to have any form of communication with them anymore. “You can better your life, make something out of it. Live, Sidekick. Live and be happy without me as your partner.” Of course, Sidekick wasn’t gonna listen to that. Not because they disrespected Villain, but because there were other variables playing a role in this bigger game. Sidekick wanted to be able to use their superpower, their superspeed, even though that wasn’t allowed in their society. They didn’t just want to be a brainless creature that followed the pack, not being able to be themselves. Villain had always protected them from the cops. The two of them could handle them, and Sidekick never had to be scared to get caught for working with Villain and using their powers as much as they wanted to. It had been so much fun and such a relief from being stuck in a world that moved so much slower than they could go. Seconds had felt like years until they started to work with Villain and were able to use their powers. Now that Villain sent them away, Sidekick needed a way to keep an eye on them, to see Villain again now that they were separated. They needed a way to be able to use their powers, to prevent themselves from going crazy, while everything around them seemed to go in slow motion. They wanted some friends, they were desperate for people around them, so they weren’t alone in a world where everyone hated them. That was exactly why they decided to join the heroes a few days ago. It was the perfect way to be able to still use their powers and also keep an eye on Villain. “Ah, Sidekick! Ready for your first mission? We found dear old Villain using their powers while working on their plans again,” Hero1 said, as soon as Sidekick walked in. Sidekick didn’t look up at them, knowing Hero1 wanted to see how they reacted upon hearing Villain’s name. “It’s time we put an end to this and take Villain to jail,” Hero2 said. Sidekick couldn’t help but look up now. All three heroes were there. Sidekick looked around, not sure what they expected of them. What were they supposed to do? All of this was still so new to them. It felt so awkward just standing here in the doorway, observing the rest, hoping to find a clue of what they were supposed to do. The heroes were standing around a bigger table in the middle of the room, watching something playing on the screen. Sidekick slowly walked towards the table, doing the same as the heroes. They watched the heroes from the corner of their eye, making sure they were doing the right thing. “Well if we get them, we better make sure they never get out of jail ever again,” Hero3, their leader, said, crossing their arms as they watched the screen. Sidekick looked up at them, their eyes widening. Did they really want to lock Villain up for the rest of their life? Why?! Sidekick let their eyes go back to the screen. They could see Villain running from the cops, but so far they seemed to be doing just fine. The cops had never been able to get to any of them. Then again, Villain was too smart for them. Sidekick had to make sure not to chuckle at that thought. The heroes would think they were still on Villain’s side and kick them out. If that happened, Sidekick would be all alone. They had no one else, and even worse, they wouldn’t be allowed to use their powers anymore. “You don’t really think Villain is that bad, do you?” Sidekick asked quietly. Scared of how the heroes might react to that. They tore their eyes away from the screen, to see all three heroes were looking at them. “Why wouldn’t we?” Hero1 asked. “They hurt a lot of people, they’re using their powers, which is already against the law, and on top of that, they’re using them for bad things. They killed people.” “Jail is too generous for them if you ask me,” Hero3 said, letting themselves drop into a chair. “They broke too many things, too many laws. Besides, we all know that one of their victims was my friend. I will never forgive them for that.” Sidekick glanced back at the screen, watching Villain run over the roves. That was not how they remembered Villain. They had always been so caring, so nice. “You don’t have to, Hero3. No one is expecting you to,” Hero2 said. “Villain is scum, they’re bad and it would be better if we took them down today.” Sidekick shook their head. “Villain isn’t bad,” they almost whispered. “They are not! They cared for me! The people that died were accidents and Villain has to live knowing that they caused that. It is hard on them too. They didn’t mean to.” Hero3 jumped to their feet, causing the chair to fall over. “Accidents, you say?! You call Villain killing one of my friends an accident!” They teleported so they were right in front of Sidekick now, looking down at them angrily. “It is that you’re still a kid, but if you say anything like that again, I kick you out of my group!” Sidekick swallowed. They looked at the other two heroes for help, but they looked away from them. Of course, they were on Hero3’s side. “But..” Sidekick murmured quietly. They didn’t dare to finish their sentence, scared it would anger Hero3 even more. “Hero2?” Sidekick asked instead. “They saved your life before, at least you must know that they’re not all bad, right?” Hero2 shook their head. “That doesn’t take away everything else they did, Sidekick. Villain isn’t a good guy. They need to be brought to justice.” Sidekick lowered their head. “Yeah... Maybe you’re right, sorry,” they said, just to get Hero3 to relax again. They still didn’t fully agree with it, but they didn’t want everyone to be angry with them, while they just came here a few days ago. They couldn’t risk being kicked out of the group and despite their disagreements, Sidekick quite liked the heroes. “Okay, suit up everyone,” Hero3 said. “Oh and Sidekick. Don’t forget your communication device. You’re not allowed to turn it off during a mission, we have to be able to communicate with each other at all times. It’s a group rule, don’t break it.” Sidekick nodded. “I understand.” With that they left, ready for their first mission against their old partner
