Seeking Faith

Jaehyun has recently come to the realisation that he works. A lot. And that maybe, he’s a workaholic.

It’s not like he particularly enjoys working himself to the bone, chipping away at his immune system as he burned midnight oil daily. It’s not like he feels compelled to make a show of his work ethic either. But there’s just this urge to remain busy at all times. To remain distracted. Else he would have to much time to ponder about unnecessary things. He’s a man that looks forward, not backwards. Lies. He’s a man of logic and reason. Not a man of emotion. Lies.

He’s a man that needs structure, routine in his life. Else he’d just be an aimless soul skimming the surface of life. ( As if you’re aren’t already dead on the inside. )

So when there are no classes or jobs scheduled, he’s forced into making do without distractions. Or rather, he’s forced into trying to find decent distractions to keep at bay the thoughts he’d rather not have – he’s not one for sentimentality of the past. 

It’s hard though, when everything else outside of work and study just seems so terribly dull and useless. Conversations with other residents are superficial, just like their relationship with him. How many, he wonders, actually knows him? Who is real? Who isn’t? Not that he cares about such petty things. People are just people. Everyone has a second face ( especially you ). He knows that. Yet he stares, and stares, and stares at them till his eyes dry out, trying to find the answers to his questions. He never does. 

Sighing, he pushes open the door to his dorm, eyes landing on the lithe figure dancing fluidly at the centre of the living room where the coffee table had been pushed to the side to make more space.

He’d heard of Chanyeol being a dancer, but he’d never seen the man in action before. Till now. 

And he danced beautifully, with grace and elegance despite the lack of accompanying music to supply the rhythm. It didn’t feel right to interrupt the man, so instead, he took a seat by the couch and watched. Mesmerised.

“then what do you suggest?”

“Noona…” She tucked her embarrassment behind a wavering smile.

She held off on correcting him for a few reasons. She missed the first opportunity to do so, because she didn’t catch him calling her dongsaeng. She wanted to avoid seeing a kicked puppy reaction. She didn’t want to ruin a good thing they had going. Being doted on was nice, and biting the hand that was nice to her seemed terribly rude. 

( Yet it only dawned on her now that lying to him all this time was equally rude. )

“You should… Call me noona.” She repeated it to give him another chance to catch her meaning. Her gaze wandered everywhere outside the region of his face. It darted around the diner from its brightly colored wallpaper to the off colored between the tiles. Maybe somewhere in this place, there was a reasonable explanation she could offer as to why she nurtured those false pretenses for so long.

↪️ before the lights go out

being in her shoes one would expect precision, vigilance — foolhardy negligence was unheard of when overthinking every step of the way becomes a necessity for survival. kim jiwon makes her first mistake here, she trivializes the matter, thinking so little of it that it becomes no more to her than just a game. 

but that’s just what she was, highly intelligent but none the wiser. jiwon let it happen, in her reckless abandon she allowed herself be so caught up in her quest for treasure that the ominious, almost foreboding silence is overlooked — she assures herself that she’s brave, that no rational individual would let their imagination get the better of them, not like this.  

jiwon looks around as if to assess her surroundings, she knows she’s reached the north wing by now, but other than a small box on the ground and the occasional flicker of broken lights it’s a sea of black as far as the eye can see. 

(and it’s vague, but just when the lights come on again, right in the corner of her eye she swears that she sees — no, that’s not possible. she brushes off the thought before it can get any further than that.) 

footsteps, jiwon can hear nothing but her own footsteps droning on in the stillness. but then there’s a weird clatter and she’s prompted to peer over her shoulder and into the dismal abyss of black — whether the dripping of water or the clattering of rotting wood she’s heard something, but sees nothing. the eerie silence envelops jiwon up until her next steps recieve her with a prophetic flicker, then out of nowhere- a snap. it’s uncanny, her senses tell her she should run, turn around and get out of here as fast as you can, but her body stays frozen in place. her heart rings in her ears; nobody’s supposed to be here, and she knows that. the only person who dared come out this far had been her, and her alone. 

there’s another flicker. and her eyes instantly meet the box on the ground. 

it’s moved.

she’s convinced that her eyes, her normally reliable eyes are decieving her. they’re influenced by imagination, by the blurry lines between fiction and reality the circus prompted her to address. jiwon looks around and once again — stop it. just stop it, she reassures herself, it’s all nothing. there was no possibility that anyone other than her was in this hallway. she’s been nothing but silent and far enough out of reach, there isn’t anyone here but her, there’s no way-

she snaps her head forward and a pair of eyes stare back at her, just inches from her face. 

and so she runs. jiwon clutches the straps of her rucksack and runs through the corridor as fast as her legs can take her.

“people lie all the time.”

Jin Goo shrugs, “They do. Are you just realizing that now, or are you using that as an excuse?” There’s no malice in his tone. Chanyeol’s definitely not from the city. Perhaps that was why he found a lot of these city quirks odd. It’s nice. He hopes that Chanyeol wouldn’t be changed by the city. It had a tendency to taint those who visited.

“then what do you suggest?”

Sentence Starters

“Ahh~?” He tilts his head and leans a little further against the wall. He’s in this small kitchen just to attempt to lend a hand. He doesn’t even know the person in front of him exceptionally well, but he likes him simply because he’s another freak and that means enough as far as Zitao is concerned. He twirls a finger despite his arms being crossed over his chest and gives a small noise of approval. He’s not really sure how he started this, but he won’t stop. He’s happy to help- happy to be worth something. He smiles just enough for it to be noticeable and speaks softly.

“You’ll need to stir it just a bit more.” He hums again. “Just in case some of the dry mix isn’t properly mixed in. It’s terrible to suddenly hit a bite of it when you’re eating. The people I would cook for usually complained about that sort of thing.” That’s an underexaggeration, but there’s no reason to let this new monster learn about such terrible things. Most mutants freak out when they figure out what happened to Zitao, so he often makes a little more of an effort to hide his past than he normally does. He smiles just a little more. It’s nice to be helping someone- even if just with their baking.

“Do you like sweets…? Or are these for someone else?” He’s attempting friendliness. He wants to come across as personable- kind. The people in this foundation often need some form of support and while Zitao considers himself the lowest of the low, he would still like to be worth something to them. Even if they just find it necessary to request funds from him occasionally, he’ll take that as a triumph. It’s something and, in all honesty, Huang Zitao is a simple person.

“I usually find that sweets being made for someone else mean something, though I won’t prod. If they’re for you, then that’s also quite excusable. I don’t blame you.”

“Hari. A person. Come here. They no pay, so they work with you. Okay?”

For whatever reason, her manager thought it’d be better to converse in English than Korean. The joke was that she was equally incompetent in both languages, but she got the drift of his message. She nodded and said, “Okay.”

The last time this happened, none of them got to go home on time. The guy washed a fork and a spoon before taking off his gloves and played with his phone for the rest of the time. He only got his dainty little hands back in the gloves and finished the smallest stack of dishes after a few threats were tossed his way. They did not need a repeat of that incident.

Worst case scenario: she would wash the other person’s pile of dishes so all of them could get out of this hell hole a little quicker. 

The kitchen doors creaked open and she craned her neck to see who the penniless person was. The face didn’t register, but faces rarely ever did for her. She noted his height though. He could easily stare over the top of her manager’s head. It was a good thing she planned on doing his dishes for him. It’d be hard to threaten a guy who looked like he should be an athlete. 

She waved to him. Not as a greeting, though she could see how it could get misconstrued as such. Everything she said and did was always subject to misinterpretation. She was used to that. But she waved to him from the sinks to save him the embarrassment of wandering around.

Midnight Stroll | Chanyeol & Jin Goo

He couldn’t sleep. There were a few nights recently like this one. Jin Goo eyed his bed for a moment before exhaling and grabbing his jacket instead. Slipping it on, he headed outside. There’s no point in trying to sleep. He’d end up doing the same thing anyways. 

Hands shoved into his pockets, Jin Goo walked around outside. It was a nice night, not many clouds in the sky, and just cool enough that his breath misted in the air.

He sat on the stone edge of a flowerbed, staring into the dark sky. It was quiet. After all, it was 3 in the morning, and not many people were awake at such early hours.
