With a groan, Lilith ties up her braid and pulls her hood over her eyes, fiddling with the weights sewn into the ends of the hood. Before snapping back to reality and finishing up the buckles on her tac-vest. Double-checking to ensure the small old worn key chain her father gave her is still in its pocket, before taking a deep breath and opening the door, walking out of her barracks, and making her way to the briefing room.
Taking yet another deep breath, flexing her wings; smoothing down the
feathers and slowly opening the door.
“Lieutenant Hatchett?” The man at the front of the room calls out. -A dragon with one wing, a cigar in hand.
“Yessir,” Lilith nods, closing the door behind her and taking everything in. A Werewolf, a Harpy, and a Wraith. This is my team. Lilith thinks to herself can only hope they’re as good as Laswell said.
“You’re just in time, Lieutenant, I’m Captain Price.. He gestures towards the Werewolf and Harpy, who both give small waves and a respectful nod or
two.
“And over there is my other Lieutenant, Simon Riley, Callsign Ghost,” Price finishes, motioning toward the Wraith.
Who of course immediately locks eyes with her from behind his skull mask
and huffs, an aura of skepticism clear in his tone as an air of tension settles over the room. “We don’t need her,”
The Werewolf, Soap chuckles and walks to her side, putting a hand on her shoulder. “Ah dinnae worry, he’ll warm up to ye, he’s a big softie once ye get to know ‘im,”
I shrug at his smile. Not at all impressed. “Yeah, I don’ give a shi’,” Lilith says, “Go’ a job t’ do, and I don’ ‘ave time fer’ Pussies.”
The Harpy- Gaz lets out a choked noise and Price sighs. “Everybody Focus,” and everyone turns to face the screen. Lilith takes her seat, though Lilith can feel the glare of the Wraith burning the back of her head. As Price explains the mission.
“Laswell’s Received Intel that Barton Wood Code name ‘The Viper’ is on the move here, in Paucarpata, Arequipa, moving through the Andes to Bolivia,” He begins, as the large screen lights up with a map and the Target’s
information.
“Do we have a Time frame?” Gaz asks. Flexing his wings.
“As far as we know, they’re leaving tonight. We have 72 hours to capture him before the mission is declared a failure,” Price answers.
“Do we know wha’ ‘e is?” Lilith asks.
“Manticore,” He presses a button and the supposed Route they will take highlights itself on the map behind him. Over a thousand kilometers.
“This is the Route our Intel gathered,” he explains. Pointing to a heavily forested area on the map “We’ll be dropping in here, and we’ll have about two t’ three hours to set up before his convoy arrives. We need him alive, got it?”
Everyone nods in confirmation.
“That being said, Wood is the only one we need alive. Everyone else on that convoy is expendable,” Price adds, his tone darkening.
“Everyone Clear?” He calls out. And everyone nods. “Wheels up in ten,” he
answers before dismissing everyone, and they all leave, The Wraith however shoulder checks her on his way out the door.
Lovely, a childish bitch. Lilith thinks to herself. Suppressing a sigh and making her way toward the Armory.
Lilith can’t help but feel a twinge of annoyance at Ghost’s comment. Rolling her eyes Lilith turns to Soap, who unlike her doesn’t seem ready to rip someone’s head off yet. “Nice t’ meet you, Soap, Gaz,” Lilith says with a nod, trying to keep her tone neutral.
Soap chuckles, his Scottish accent thick, “Likewise, lass. Don’t let Ghost
get tae ye, he’s just a bit… intense.”
“Back at ya luv,” Gaz smiles
She raises an eyebrow. “No?” Lilith gasps incredulously. “I never would've guessed.”
That earns her a chuckle from both Soap and Gaz.
“Let’s move, we’ve got prep to do!” Gaz mutters.
Soap nods and they follow him out into the bustling compound. The air charged with anticipation and tension for the coming operation.
They enter the armory, a cavernous room filled with racks upon racks of weapons and gear. The smell of gun oil and metal is comforting in its familiarity. While Soap and Gaz head straight for their preferred weaponry, Lilith scans the walls for something that might give her an edge against a creature like a Manticore. Clipping a few explosive grenades, knockout
grenades and flash bangs to her vest.
“What’s ‘he plan fr’ ‘he drop?” Lilith asks Soap as he checks over his gear, a wicked-looking pair of claw-like blades gleaming on his vest in the harsh light. Lilith grabs a pair off the wall for herself and hooks them on
her belt.
“We’re going in by helo, they won’t be able to land properly though, so we’re droppin’ in. You ever done that before, luv?” Gaz Interrupts,
“A few ‘imes,” Lilith replies, keeping her voice steady despite the knot forming in her stomach. “I can ‘andle it“
It wasn’t that Lilith was scared of heights. She has wings for God’s sake. She was just… not very fond of Heights, not of her own making.
Lilith spreads her wings as she leaps from the helo, slowing her descent, grip tight on her weapon as she waits for the others to land.
“’bout a kilometer to the ambush point,” Price calls out as soon as he lands.
“We cleared fr shif’ing?” Lilith asks as they make their way to the ambush point. Price nods. “As needed, but avoid jumping straight to shifting, we’re going in covertly,” he adds.
“Alrigh’, In ‘ha’ case you all are goin ‘o need ‘hese,” Lilith says, tossing each of them a small coin-like token on a leather cord. “Tha’ way in case I do need ‘o shif’ I won’ mess you up t’ much,” Lilith explains, in response to the confused looks on each of their faces.
And the annoyed look on Ghosts. However, Lilith chooses to ignore him and continue walking to the Ambush point with everyone else.
“Whit species are ye ‘f ye dinnae mind me, skin lass?” Soap asks after a moment.
She look over her shoulder at him. “Death Spirit,” Lilith says simply, ignoring the scoff in front of her.
Suspiciously in the direction of Ghost.
After about half an hour of lovely silent walking, Price holds his hand up to signal them to stop. “here we are,” he says. Setting his bag down “Get yourselves set up, Soap I want tripwires along this road, Hatchett. Gaz
want you in those trees out there, got it?”
“On it, sir,” Lilith and Gaz answer in unison. Spreading their wings and flying toward a particularly thick cluster of trees. Setting up their weaponry and getting comfortable. While the others talk over the radio.
“Alright everybody shut up,” Lilith hisses over the radio, “They’re getting close.”
Ghost growls. “How d’you know?” Lilith’s wings flutter in annoyance at the question.
“I Can hear ‘heir hear’beats, now quie’,” she snaps, ignoring the grumbling over the radio that follows.
When the sound of an engine comes into earshot. “Got eyes on ‘em,” Ghost calls out as the line of trucks comes into view.
Both Gaz and Lilith hold their breath, waiting to get eyes on Wood. Finally catching sight of him in the third car.
“Distraction time Soap,” Price calls out. And a huge wolf bounds out onto the road. Causing the driver in the first car to slam on the brakes.
“Ready for Shadow obscuring,” Gaz calls over the Radio, while he and Lilith
get to their feet, wings poised for takeoff as the driver of the first truck gets out to inspect the front of the car as the wolf gleefully scampers off. But not before launching at the driver and tearing its claws
into him.
Causing everyone but Wood to get out of the Truck weapons drawn toward the
commotion
Ghost sends a blanket of shadows over Gaz and Lilith, hiding them from sight as they fly toward the truck, lunging at one of the soldiers. Knife in hand. unaware of the enemy Wraith sneaking up behind the two. cloaked with shadows of his own
Lilith notices him all too late. Shoving Gaz out of the way as the Wraith throws a punch, she blocks it, but the force of the blow still sends her stumbling backwards. tripping over a rock and careening off the edge of the
mountain
Lilith grunts in pain, pushing herself back to her feet and looking up at the mountain ridge she was thrown off of.
“Fuckin’ arsehole,” she mutters to herself, dusting her suit off. And scrambling to find her radio. Letting out a sigh of relief when she finds it relatively undamaged.
“Soap, Gaz, Ghost, Price, you boys there?” she attempts on the radio.
“Glad tae hear ye bonnie,” Soap answers.
“Good,” she mutters, her voice turning slightly murky.
“You okay Hatchett?” Price calls. His question answered by the sound of flesh twisting and tearing, bones cracking and reforming.
“Boys, cover your fuckin ears,” she answers, her voice growing increasingly murky and distant.
“Fuckin’ hell,” Ghost Grumbles, as everyone does as she says, covering their ears.
Only to be startled by a bone-splitting shriek like that of a wounded animal. as a figure shrouded in shredded shadowy garments, with grotesque looking bony jet black feathered wings flies over the group, going straight for the Wraith that had pushed Lilith off the side of the mountain. her cry
immobilizing him enough for her to sink her claws into him. tearing at his shadowy flesh. before moving on to the other soldiers
Ghost raises an appreciative eyebrow at the scene, the cries and wails of the soldiers mixing with the furious snarls of Lilith’s true form, stirring something within him. but whether that something is positive or negative he’s yet to figure out.
Eventually the screams die out, and Lilith’s true form collapses unconscious. shifting back to her humanoid form
