RIP Charlie Murphy

There was a large part of my freshman year at NYU where I should have been studying but instead, I was watching episodes of Comedy Centrals Chapelle’s Show. I grew up watching (but not fully understanding) the stand-up comedians of fathers generation. But when it came to Dave Chappelle’s sketch comedy, it was almost as if it was curated with people like me in mind as their target audience. I instantly fell in love with that thirty-minute time slot every Wednesday night.

My favorite sketch of all time was Fun At KneeHigh Park and the song that this character sang. It was voiced by the one and only Charlie Murphy. After becoming familiar during his run on Chappelle’s show, I started seeing how instrumental Charlie was in Eddie’s career and how funny he was on his own. Tonight Charlie passed away from his battle with Leukemia, something that has also taken the life of my grandfather. And I felt compelled to laugh at his genius one more time. And if you don’t think it’s appropriate well then that’s why…I say…Fuck It!! Rest In Peace Charlie Murphy
