Chapter 330: The Expedition
Stepping out of their vehicle, the three women stared out over the barren landscape. It was still early in the day, so the oppressive heat hadn’t yet begun to build – but one could easily feel the potential in the air as the dry breeze met their skin.
A large man stepped into view, waving and smiling broadly, and the girls instantly relaxed.
“Sullah!” Theresa called out, striding forward. “I should have known mom would call you.”
“Hello, Theresa,” the older man said. “I’m glad she did. I’d have been angry if she had excluded me from such an adventure.”
“Hello, old friend,” Ruth said, approaching, ready for a trek into the desert. “Thanks for coming. You brought people we can trust?”
“Oh, yes,” Sullah replied, nodding. “They’ve been with me for years.”
“And no one else knows we’re here?” Ruth asked.
“No one,” Sullah said. “Not for long, mind you. This area is heavily patrolled by the government to prevent unauthorized access, so we have a day, maybe two, before someone comes knocking.”
“Then let’s make the best of them,” Ruth said, walking to the front of the vehicles while the others followed. “I don’t have authorization for this dig, so we’ll need to make good speed. Good thing is, I think I know exactly where we need to dig.”
“Where, boss?” Sullah asked.
Ruth stared across the desert for a moment, then pointed.
“According to the scroll, we dig right there, at the base of those rocks,” she said. “We should see signs of the entrance within ten to fifteen feet of the surface.”
“That shallow?” Theresa said. “Didn’t you once tell me that most tombs are buried under forty or fifty feet of sand?”
“They are, but the way these rocks are configured, I’m guessing that we’ll hit paydirt pretty quickly,” Ruth replied.
“And if you’re wrong?” Theresa asked.
“Then they’ll find us before we find the tomb,” Ruth said. “So let’s hope I’m right.”
Theresa shook her head.
“The question is, who will find us?’ she said. “The government? Or the guys who held you prisoner?”
