They gather in Mary ‘s room so she doesn’t have to move. Baby Alex still holds his own. He nurses, sleeps and, voids, just like he is supposed to. His doctor carefully monitors him.
Claire sits, by her new husband, Maggie in her lap. Jenny sits by Mary, the boys beside her. Danny sits opposite them.
Jamie clears his throat and stands. “We have a decision to make. The mist should be cleared. We have discussed staying here, where it is safe but,” He looks to his niece, resting against Claire, sighs and continues, “the isolation and lack of sunlight, is affecting us all. It has been suggested that a team be sent out to scout out the situation above us.”
“Who would go?” Mary asks. She pulls Alex closer.
He sighs again. “Claire and Danny.” He talked with Claire about it the previous night. She, as expected, was all in.
“That makes the most sense.” She cautiously offers, knowing how the idea must grate on him.
*No!” Willie comes to his feet, hands fisted. “No! Let him go alone. Not taken Miss Claire.”
Jamie walks over and lifts his stuff body against his own. He murmurs in Gealic until he lossens up and lays limp against him. Looking at Danny, he says, “ I felt the same as the lad and won’t pretend I didn’t . I am trusting you with her because I see a change in you and,” he turns to Claire, “because I know my love will have no problem taking you out if you act up.”
“None.”
“If the mist is lifted, then what?” Fergus asks.
“Then we find a safe place to be, above ground.” He looks around. “All agree?”
Everyone does.
