That scene where Petra and Magda are throwing the grenades off the boat, and Magda gets some well-deserved comeuppance for her shit, which is satisfying, and the whole thing is played for laughs, but then you think about it from Petra’s perspective, and like... 

She’s pregnant, and she’s been forced into a sham marriage with an abusive ex, and surprise, it’s so he has cover to smuggle weapons into the country. And it makes sense why she’d go running back to her mother for help, even though it rips your heart out every time it happens because Magda is an abusive piece of shit and the utterly worst influence that keeps dragging Petra down when she’s trying to be good. But Magda actually does help in a way that’s useful for once, and Petra thinks it’s finally over, and she can relax for one quick moment, for the first time in forever.

Except nope, before she’s even fully taken a breath, she sees her mom get blown the fuck up??? Which is the second time her mom has gotten seriously injured literally right in front of her. And legit, Magda would’ve been bleeding profusely from her stump of a hand, and there was probably shrapnel in her eye socket, and Petra would’ve had to see that and provide medical attention until the paramedics showed up.

And like, that’s supremely traumatic to witness in general, but especially to see your mother like that? As awful and toxic and abusive as Magda has always been, Petra still loved her. And yeah, the whole “I pretended to be a paraplegic for years to manipulate and control you” thing happened, but this time Magda was actually disabled, and it happened while she was helping Petra out of a really awful situation, and of course Magda would make sure to remind her of it at every opportunity, and wow, what a useful thing to use as guilt trip material after you’ve stuck your hook into a guy’s throat, and you need help hiding the body. 

Anyway, I guess if I have to have a point to this ramble, it’s that something like this would be a defining life experience for most people, but for Petra it’s more like a blip on the Trauma Radar(TM) because’s she’s been through so much other shit already, with an extra heaping of awful shit still yet to come.

The only acceptable reason for Magda to remain alive is for JR to cuss her out when she returns. That would bring the whole “we’ll deal with her together” thing full circle and the writers will finally have a decent parallel.
