Smoke: There are hidden things in the air! What’s a secret from your story?
I had to think carefully about this one, because so many of the secrets in Changeling would be spoilery.
Eventually I've settled on a secret Booker Reed has that he'll never tell, and is a little ashamed of.
The first thing you need to know to understand some of Booker's backstory is that Fey can die from a broken heart.
So when both of Booker's parents died, leaving him with no other family for support, he was well on his way to following them from sheer grief when Madeline Hail showed up took him in.
He had little interest in befriending Lizzy Hail, despite the fact that they were of similar age, and had similar interests. He was too wrapped up in his grief to care much about the daughter of the woman how was trying to keep him from reuniting with his parents.
Until he overheard a Court Fey taunting Lizzy about not having wings. Sort of.
He overheard the teasing, and it made him curious. He saw Lizzy not getting upset, but getting angry. The problem was she couldn't reach the court fey taunting her, because the other child was flying around Lizzy's head, just out of reach.
And all Booker could think about were the pitying whispers that had followed him through the halls of the court when he'd been left alone, and ignored, after his parents death.
He verbally tore apart that court fey, viciously, and without mercy. She barely had a chance to defend herself, and when she tried he twisted her words back on her until she was a stuttering, stumbling mess.
It was that singular moment that bonded Lizzy and Booker together as permanent friends. If Lizzy couldn't force herway out of a situation by threatening violence until the fey backed down, Booker would destroy them verbally.
But his secret is; he had no intention of helping Lizzy. That wasn't why he stepped in. He still, at that point, didn't want to be friends.
He saw an opportunity to lash out, to be cruel, to get his own back, so to speak, and he took it. Aiding Lizzy was a side effect.
Now, he'd lay down his life for her, and he's very much ashamed of his motivations at the time, and he'll never, ever, reveal to Lizzy that defending her wasn't his intention at the time.
Core Drive Logan’s favorite Halloween costume as a kid was when he dressed up as Indiana Jones. There’s home video somewhere of him practicing with a whip and knocking over an expensive piece of artwork and making this face: 😨
Like Cee, Ezra can’t swim. Like, he wouldn’t drown, but it would not be a graceful situation. There would be a lot of splashing. He just hasn’t spent much time near water. But you better believe if he had to convince someone that he could swim he would make himself sound like Michael Phelps.
they are both perfect in every way so wonderful. Thank you for asking about two of my favorite cowboys 🤠👨🏽🚀
How do I make a character have a secret well? My character have a dead half-brother in the past (prequel book) and talks about it sometimes with her half-brother's living boyfriend, but manages to keep it a secret from her best friend until the epilogue.
To make the secret feel like a real secret, you need to giveit importance and high stakes. Why doesyour protagonist not want her friend or anyone else to find out? What would happen if her friend or anyone elsedoes find out? Make sure the readerunderstands what is at stake if the secret is revealed, otherwise they willwonder what is the big deal about having a dead family member.
To give the secret weight, put the character in manysituations where the secret is at risk of being revealed. This will show how the secrets affects thecharacter and to what lengths she will go to protect it.
Hope this helps! Letme know if you would like me to clarify or elaborate on anything. \^o^/
