#thank you so much for pointing this out #since my pre teens I've praised fanfiction for giving jasmine not just the attention but the role she deserves #not to mention her character exploration such as her life drastic changes #she was basically Rapunzel Arabian style

ETA: I’d been meaning to write up some of these thoughts before (I can’t remember if I have), but your tags “Rapunzel Arabian style” jumpstarted my thoughts. No need to respond. I just wanted to document what got me thinking these thoughts and finally posting them.

What’s fascinating about Jasmine being “Rapunzel Arabian style” is how Jasmine fulfills the desire or want of Rapunzel (see the world) and the social class (princess). But Aladdin fulfills the narrative (its my story, for the most part) and (could have) the social adjustment of Rapunzel (what do royalty do?). Or what I call the “Cinderella situation” where someone with no royal upbringing is thrust into that setting. (Fairy tale Rapunzel would actually fit this. Disney lets her be a princess by birth AND keep the commoner raised to royalty trope.)

So where Jasmine is like Rapunzel in what she wants and her social class (making Aladdin like Eugene as a commoner, a love interest, and “orphan”*), Aladdin is like Rapunzel in terms of narrative drive and whose story it is (making Jasmine like Eugene as a love interest/secondary character).

Obviously, there’s not much parallel between Jasmine and Eugene. 

And Aladdin can either be like Rapunzel (how do commoners do royal stuff) or Eugene (I’ve got food and a palace; let’s settle). The latter would fit what Aladdin wants in the movie (“we’ll be rich, live in the palace”), even if that’s only part of what he wants, and the general vibe of the original tale. The former also fits the original (the Cinderella situation) and what Aladdin wants in RoJ (“I want to see the world”) and is addressed in at least two episodes (The Return of Malcho and that Mekanikles episode). In that sense, the set up for the Aladdin Series is proto-Rapunzel: The main protagonist wants to get out of the palace and see what’s out there.

What’s too bad is 1. That’s what Jasmine wants, so disserve to her, and 2. There’s no attempt to imagine what Aladdin would do or want based on his established character, so disservice to him.

Worse, the whole set up of “seeing the world” isn’t even used much. Why did you use that as the transition to the Series? Why didn’t you percolate off Aladdin to set up the kind of Series you wanted (adventure and magic)?

But to be fair, it’s probably because Aladdin was rushed into production cause the movie was popular.

*I don’t classify Aladdin as a thief, and I don’t equate Eugene’s Flynn Rider persona with Aladdin’s “I gotta be impressive as a prince” persona.

Aladdin doesn’t have a very clearly defined want at the beginning of the movie. Or rather he does—home and monetary security, and being seen as the person he is rather the social class he is—it’s just crammed in a reprise. Genie and Jasmine get scenes and dialogue to establish their wants.

Has anyone read these books by C.S.Harris?  The main character is Sebastian St.Cyr, a nobleman in Regency England.  The author’s website describes him as “Mr.Darcy with a James Bond edge.”  I read the first one and I’ve started the second one.  I am picturing the Stupid Angel Face as Sebastian, and let me tell you, I am enjoying the stories immensely. These would make a great mini-series.  They are very well-written and engaging.  Check them out!
