While there are only a handful of feminist bookstores in the U.S., several of them report that the perfect storm of Donald Trump’s 2016 election and the subsequent #MeToo movement have reinvigorated their businesses.
Publishers Weekly recently featured WNDB’s Bookseller of the Year Award Winner Charis Books while discussing the resurgence of interest in feminist bookstores! Check it out:
Despite the increase in traffic and sales, [bookseller E.R.] Anderson said that Charis booksellers are neither surprised nor overwhelmed. “Everything we’ve been saying for the past 40 years is being listened to,” she noted. “We’re finally not being treated as hysterical, crazy femi-Nazis. Feminism is ‘cool.’ It’s definitely a moment.” Charis customers, Anderson added, want to “plug in, and not just march in the streets.”

“We Need Diverse Books, the grassroots organization that works to promote diversity in contemporary literature, announced on Tuesday that Sara Luce Look, the co-owner of Charis Books & More in Atlanta, is the winner of its debut Bookseller of the Year Award. Look, who has worked at the 43-year-old indie feminist bookstore in the Little Five Points neighborhood since 1994, has been its co-owner since 1997; she is the store’s general manager and head book buyer.”

Here are two recordings of virtual book events: one with Ed Hall for Charis Books and More and one with Alix Harrow for Harvard Books.

(If you’ve read The Blue Place and other Aud books you will recognise him as ‘Eddie,’ one of Aud’s Atlanta friends.) A few days ago I did my final Menewood event—speaking with Karen Joy Fowler for Mysterious Galaxy. At some point that…

This is a youth focused group for trans people, people questioning their own gender, and aspiring allies. We provide a facilitated space to discuss gender, relevant resources, and activism around social issues. Whether silently or aloud, please come ready to consider your own gender in a transient world. This is a project of the Feminist Outlawz. This event is co-sponsored by Charis Circle's Strong Families, Whole Children Program. There is no suggested donation for youth participants of this program but adults and allies may make a donation in support of this program.
