Far beneath GEAR’s facility, 11 armed men stood around a raised circle as they had been doing off and on for the last 3 days. Adorned in shiny white armor, they pointed the claw-lie weapons on their arm towards the center. They had each been given a simple role. To capture and detain anyone who appeared. Something of theirs had been stolen.  Patiently, they waited, not so much as cough while focused on their objective. It wasn’t until a light began to glow at it’s center did they move.

“Steady there, we don’t need the device damaged on the entrance.” A scientist behind a nearby machine commanded, his expression masked by a pair of white goggles.

In the middle of the circle, a figure slowly began to materialize. It didn’t even take a second after the light faded before the figure was constrained by his wrists, ankles, neck, and even tail with the claws.

The scientist walked over and looked the figure up and down before stating to the squadron a rather disappointed tone. 

“This one isn’t him either. Take him away for testing though. He seems to possess similar technology.”

Hot Pursuit

A liquor store, maybe forty minutes away. Burned to the ground. The locals say it had to be an accident, the owner had no enemies and the store was doing fine. The only problem was there was no source. Wiring was fine, no evidence of any sort of fire-starter was found, and it seemed impossible for a fire to spread so fast. 

The cops didn’t know shit. This was a mystery that only scientist Char Ivanov thought he could solve. 

A blurry photo of a girl, a string of locations on a map, and radio babble was all he had to go by, but it was enough to figure out this was the result of some sort of super-human. 

He arrived at the scene, disguised in his human form: a lanky man with dark brown hair and scruffy beard with a long flowing trench coat in case the nanobots wore off. He dipped down below the caution tape and began to investigate. The night was still, no sign of anyone around, but he could feel someone’s gaze burning a hole in his skull. It was as if he was being watched.

Not-So-Quick Fix

Well, there’s an unexpected change of pace. After over a week of little to no clients, five people ran into The Workshop back-to-back, all with different devices to get fixed. With such a rush of clients, it takes a while for William to get to each of them. Each client heads out as their devices are taken in to be worked on over the next day or so. With a queue of repairs and nothing else to do, the cat gets started right away with the first client’s tablet.

After a while (and an accidental solder burn), Will finishes up with the smallish tablet, screwing it back together and setting it aside. Before he can start with the next repair job, however, the bell above the front door of The Workshop rings. A sixth client in one day? He’s had busier days, certainly, but today seems like a bit of a spike in activity. With no hesitation, the cat turns off his soldering iron and sets it aside before greeting his latest client.

“Welcome to The Workshop! How can I help you?”

Staring at the phone and pacing is all Char could do. Should he call? The last two encounters with the Italian businessman didn’t end well, he probably left a bad impression. But at the same time, a collaboration with the mechanical genius might prove very helpful for travelling into the unknown. 

After thirty minutes of the cycle between pacing and staring, Char finally picked up the phone and dialed the number.

“So, Evermore, it looks like we’re going to have to start from scratch.” Char tussled the hair on his “pet’s” head. 

Please don’t. As good as that feels, that’s still demeaning.

“Right, right, sorry. Still trying to get used to this whole ‘Actually a kitsune’ thing. On both of our ends.” He began; rummaging through old files trying to find anything he could about his project.

Have you tried practicing in awhile? The fox asked using the power of his mind as he hopped up onto his desk.

“No, Haven’t had anyone to practice on. If you haven’t noticed, I’m surrounded by mindless robots.” 

Well, maybe I should give you a session then.

“Yeah, maybe you should. Lets go find someone first.” 

At that, he set down all of his papers and headed for the front door. Evermore trodded behind him up the stairs to the door leading out to the woods.

“Let’s see if we can find a willing participant...” He wondered as he opened the door.

"Okay, look, when the hell are we going to finally come up with a plan?" Excel sat on a stool, head in his hand, listlessly strumming his fingers  on the bar.

"Probably not anytime soon. We still need to gather some intel. It's been awhile since we've been at GEAR. Security has been changed by then. Be patient, we'll start our attack soon." Laura replied, buried behind a manila envelope. 

"Fine! I'll go get some of my friends, and we'll attack a base." Excel shouted, slamming a fist down on the bar. 

"Oh really? You have friends?" The harshness of her tone penetrated through the papers in her hands.

"Well there's... Well, there's always... shut up!" He jumped up and headed for the door. 

"Mm-hm." Laura never looked up from her papers as he headed out.

"Whatever." He slammed the door behind him as he left. 

"I'll show her..." He grumbled to himself, dialing up the only number he had on his phone that wasn't Black Claw.

"Hello? Dallas?"
