Influential St. Louis Architect Charles Fleming Dies

Last month The Architect's Newspaper posted the sad news of the death of St. Louis, MO architect Charles Fleming. According to the obituary "In 1960, Fleming became the first African American to graduate from Washington University’s architecture program. He went on to establish his own practice, Fleming Corporation." In 1965, Fleming was a founder of the Urban Housing Foundation, a nonprofit whose mission was to combat housing discrimination based on race.

During the 1970s Fleming designed upgrades to several St. Louis public school buildings to accommodate desegregation in the district. Fleming's obituary also stated, "Before Pruitt-Igoe’s demolition in 1976, [Fleming's architectural firm] was hired in a last-ditch effort to redesign the public housing complex, but to no avail."

Fleming's best-known works are the Gateway National Bank, the first minority-owned bank in Missouri, and the physicians' dormitory at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. General Community Hospital in Watts, Los Angeles.

My Lobotomy - Howard Dully & Charles Fleming

When he was 12 years old, Howard Dully was given an “ice-pick” lobotomy by Dr. Walter Freeman and spent many of his remaining childhood and young adult years being shuffled in and out of insane asylums, juvie, and special institutions — despite there being nothing actually wrong with him. Decades later, he began researching lobotomies and digging up his own records to discover what had happened to him and why. It's sad and appalling but also inspiring.

That's true for everybody, I guess. We are all the victims of what is done to us. We can either use that as an excuse for failure, or we can say, "I want something better than that, I deserve something better than that, and I'm going to try to make myself a life worth living."
