You have been accepted for the role of CHARLES AVERY. Your application made me feel bad for giving Charles such a mean stepmother! Being unwanted as a child has given Charles a strength that’s others do not expect and I enjoyed him reading about blending into the background simply because he loved his sister so much. I loved how you talked about Charles’ relationship with Briar and enjoyed the added layer of a complicated and precarious relationship with his father. I especially liked the traits you chose for him as I thought they complemented the skeleton very well. I’m excited to see you bring Charles to life!

Charles Avery was born as his mother drew her last breaths and for much of his young life, he was raised by house elves and distant family members, his father loving yet reserved as Charles was a constant reminder of what he had lost. When he was four, his father remarried and his younger half-sister was born soon after. Constantly shunted to the side, Charles left for Hogwarts with the knowledge that he was unwanted by most and when there, had a tendency to withdraw into himself. He has often been called shy, but that is not quite correct. His scores were among the highest in his years and after Hogwarts, he took a job at the family business, his father finally grooming him to take over. While he’s marked, like many others in his social set, he has resolved to serve the Dark Lord with all he has so that he may best set himself apart.

Amycus Carrow

Dislike. Perhaps the nicest word that Charles can think of to describe Amycus Carrow. They’d never seen eye to eye in school and now that they’re both in the Inner Circle, petty spats have become explosive and verbal sparring has taken way to dueling. The only reason the Dark Lord hasn’t put a stop to it is because he finds it so amusing, but if Charles isn’t careful, his next run-in with Amycus might end worse than he expects.

Rabastan Lestrange

For as long as he can remember, Charles had always shared an intriguing relationship with the younger Lestrange. What started as a childhood friendship grew to more and the two were lovers by the time Rabastan had started his sixth year at Hogwarts. The secrecy was a burden on Charles, who had always felt it was him against the world. Things ended after Charles had graduated Hogwarts and though it has been nearly a decade, he cannot help his head from being turned as he looks across a crowded room and even something as simple as a handshake is enough to make him wonder if he had gotten it wrong.

Briar Avery

Even at his most depressed, Charles was thankful for Briar. His younger half-sister had always been a breath of fresh air and he had doted on her unlike any other. Though he worries about her frivolity, he hopes that she keeps that part of herself. The world is different and Charles will do his utmost to make sure that his most beloved family member remains unchanged even as the rest of the magical realm falls around them. And if the price is his own soul? He’s still willing to pay it.
