Charles James | ‘La Sirène’ | c. 1956 ・・・ Charles James’s La Sirène (Mermaid) gown was created using a full-length, molded dress form that widened into a fishtail shape at the bottom. The fabric was folded and stitched to create a form-fitted silhouette, its precise tucks ending at the wearer’s knees to allow for ease of movement. ・・・ #charlesjames #fashion #dress #mermaid #couture #history @museumatfit https://www.instagram.com/defunctfashion/p/Burtw8ugCht/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=14s96qi8c9x1k
House & Garden visits Dominique de Menil at her Houston home on the opening of the family’s eponymous museum in 1987. Part III The opposite end of the Menil’s living room (see Part I) showcases Braque’s Interior with Palette over a grand piano selected by their designer, couturier Charles James - who also designed the Butterfly sofa, inspired by Man Ray’s Surrealist painting Observatory Time—The Lovers. The color scheme chosen by James was intended to compliment the Braque. Yep, that’s me in the second photo - taken three years ago by designer @wmtwigs ... who without I would have likely never seen the interiors of the Menil House, as it is not open to the public. The spaces are less layered than when Dominique presided over the house. Still, it was a thrill to experience this iconic home up close and personal. In the third photo, taken in the 1960’s, a tufted velvet-covered ottoman designed by Dominique grounds the center of the room. Charles James | ‘Clover Leaf’ | c. 1953 ・・・ The American couturier Charles James was noted for his breathtakingly sculptural creations. A James gown, like this famous Four-Leaf Clover, was a masterful blending of romantic Belle Epoque elegance and sexy mid-twentieth-century glamour. His beginnings as a milliner informed his most spectacular effects, relying as they did on a layered infrastructure of nylon mesh, feather-boning, buckram, and horsehair braid. A James gown did not require hoops and crinolines to hold its form; it could literally stand on its own. ・・・ #charlesjames #fashion #dress #history #1950s https://www.instagram.com/defunctfashion/p/BuowTQCgva_/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1gdacyaz3sca0

Charles James | “Four Leaf Clover” | c. 1954 ・・・ The spiraling, flounced skirt of this evening gown looks different from every vantage point. It must have looked incredible spinning across a ball room floor. This is easily one of my favorites from Charles James. ・・・ #historicalfashion #fashion #mode #moda #ootd #christmas #historyoffashion #vintagefashion #vintage #defunctfashion #couture #charlesjames #ファッション #green #metmuseum https://www.instagram.com/p/BrShVyKAMpk/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=idwykp1t7emy
Charles James | ‘La Sirène’ | c. 1941 ・・・ Transcending the styles of three decades, James produced this dress, one of his most popular designs, from the late 1930s in Paris to the mid-1950s. While its lines correspond to the slinky silhouettes of glamorous 1930s fashions, it parts company with the bias-cut sheaths of that decade in cut, construction, and attitude. The tapered front spinelike element, supporting proportionally spaced upward tucks, adds an edgy anatomical feature, ambiguously suggestive of crustacean, reptilian, or human skeletal forms, a signature James conceit. ・・・ #historicalfashion #fashion #mode #moda #historyoffashion #purple #vintagefashion #vintage #defunctfashion #couture #charlesjames #metmuseum https://www.instagram.com/p/Bp5PxK7gqrd/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=zghq10lc6r8r
Charles James | c. 1955 • • • Charles James revolutionized the way designers placed zippers and other closures into their work. This dress features a three foot long zipper placed into the side style seam. When closed the zipper was virtually invisible and the eye was undistracted from the clean, streamlined lines of the gown. • • • #charlesjames @museumatfit #historicalfashion #1950sfashion #fashion #velvet #fashiondesign #fashionhistory #historyoffashion #vintagefashion #vintage #defunctfashion #couture #costumehistory https://www.instagram.com/p/BoxbnRnlIhd/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=y14qvqhrfr2b
